Have I killed them?

I cut my Brugs back and stored them in a dark cool place for the Winter.(They are in LARGE Pots) When the Weather started to warm up a bit last Week I brought them out repotted them and gave them a drink and left them outside on my Patio.So far so good until last night and this Morning. It has been snowing and blowing here and the temperature has been hovering around freezing. I can't bring them all back inside again (too much hard work)What are my chances of having them survive this cold snap? I would be heartbroken if I lost them,I have some of them for Years.

Is it possible to go out and cover them? We don't have a lot of cold here, but when we do I cover mine and if it's really cold I put some lights in under the tarp to keep the roots warm. Wrap those roots to keep them warm as possible. We had a very rare 72 hours below freezing followed by an even rarer snow this year and the ones that were outside are coming back. Do your best to keep the roots from freezing and if this cold doesn't last too long they should come back.

Suppose to have a few nights of -2C . You brigs will suffer some damage and a lot of stress. Just heard on the forecast that we may get freezing rain. The week is suppose to be cold.

If you are attached to your brigs, it's not too much work

They should come back, if they are only frost damaged. :) If they are grafted roses, make sure you planted them deep enough (so that the knobby graft is below the soil at least 2 inches). Also don't forget to mulch in winter, make sure to wait till after a hard freeze and then mulch with straw, or leaves. You can make a 'rose collar' out of chicken wire to keep the mulch from blowing away. If you wait till after a good freeze to mulch, that will keep most mice from making little homes in your mulch and eating the rose bush too. Also watch for deer, they LOVE roses, especially new growth. I'm experimenting with using chopped raw garlic, some yogurt strained and put into a spray bottle (with a drop or two of dishwashing liquid) to see if that keeps the deer away. I'm using it on all my plants they munch... Good luck with your roses! :)

I expect your helpful neighbor meant store in the frig., Not the freezer. On the other hand, I imagine you would have noticed if the bulbs were soft and soggy (after they thawed out), and that would be the clue that they were no good. And, who knows, maybe they are just whining about being moved, and will appear when darn good and ready. Pondy

Do you know if the hydrangeas are hardy to your zone? If they are, feel free to plant them when the fall temperatures arrive. Feel free to deadhead the flowers now or wait until the blooms all dry out as the plant goes dormant in the fall. I usually take no action and, by sometime in March, notice that all leaves and most blooms most have disintegrated or fallen on their own.

THANK YOU! they really look "not alive," so dry. But i'll give it a shot. I HOPE are right!! thanks so much. I dug them out of my dad's garden who passed away very sadly in March and well idiot grieving me didnt get my act together. i 'm so mad at myself... thanks again.

Thanks for your input.I did bring in the Pots I could move and did my best to give the huge one as much protection as I could,fingers crossed they will survive.
I know I jumped the Gun here, but I was desperate to get my space back,I won't be doing that again!

That sounds like a good plan, you would really be surprised by how they weather freezes and even snow as long as the roots don't freeze.

I've found it takes several freezes for the top to die back completely so the one outside should do okay as long as it warms up soon.

More Cold Temps today and overnights not good either,My mind is a bit easier now that I have them inside again,although D.H. is non too pleased.I am hoping they Didn't get too much of a setback and will make it through okay. Lesson Learned,don't jump the gun!!!

I too am in your Zone, near Toronto, and I rarely ever bring mine out until the first of May.I can only manage them out once a season so the May date may mean I need a blanket against a frost but rarely a freezing concern.
The one you left out keep as dry as you can, cold wet roots can terminate them, especially when in pots so they don't drain as quickly as when in the ground.
