What Is With These PVS's?

One of my PVS cats just pupated sideways on the soda bottle near the top. I mean it is actually horizontal to the bottle. Is this not a bit strange? I mean, it looks like it is suspended in air!

I'll have to get a pic to show you, but right now the chrysalis is not hard yet, so I want to wait until it has hardened before I attempt to photograph it.

I have a BST that pupated half on, half off the black lining on my monarch castle. I thought the silk would hold it, but when I came back in later, I saw it had falled two feet to the bottom of the cage. It looks okay, so I dont know what will happen to it.

Sometimes they pupate in strange positions, Susan - it'll be fine, I'm sure.
When the harness or the silk doesn't hold at either of the two spots, I just gently remove the chrysalis, which you can easily do by pulling up the remaining silk, and put it in a little "cradle" of foam rubber. Mine have all emerged as perfect adults in those cradles.
But you're absolutely right to wait a few days until the chrysalis has hardened!

Vera - run your cursor over the photo and you'll see the notes; there are two different leaf shapes on the same seedling. The one on the bottom is the original leaf and the tri-lobed leaf at the top is new. The birds bring all kinds of things up here - mostly tree seeds, but this doesn't look like it's gonna be a tree. Whatever it is, it's smack dab in the middle of the hosta. I'll probably just end up pulling it out, but I'd sure like to know what I'm pulling. I've been searching, on and off, all afternoon/evening, but no luck yet ... PV

We were cross-posting, Carolyn. I read that a small infestation can be controlled with hand-picking, insecticidal sprays or horticultural oils. The basil is getting dumped, soil and all. I'll wash the windowbox with bleach. The others - they're still in milk jugs (not the sea holly), so maybe I can pick and scrub them off, isolate the plants and hope for the best. Same with the sea holly, but that's planted with a hunk of rose campion - don't see anything on that ... yet. At least it's the end of the season; if the plants come back next year, maybe I can get ahead of it all in the spring. Fingers crossed. PV

Thank you, Rina. This plant is indoors for the time being. I just acquired this earlier this spring (it was an eBay find) and it was almost completely green. I have put it under lights to get some of the true coloring that these beauties can bring. I have a serious weakness for crested Echeveria. I am gathering materials to set up a protected area outside but it seems to have been raining now for about 30 straight days. Everything is flooded and the weeds in the flower beds are rampant! Tracy

It had hardened when I checked this morning, but it just looks so strange - like it's levitating! LOL!

I've never seen anything like that before. I am going to have to move it MissSherry. I usually pull up the silk and tape it to the windowsill where the chrysalis can hang properly. People I'm sure think it's weird to see lines of chrysalis's on the top of my windowsill! LOL!

Gwynne, sometimes when they fall, it does damage them internally, but then again, sometimes it doesn't. I hope your BST is okay!
