I don't remember ever hearing about a "spice silk moth." Had to look it up. Would not be promethea eggs. From your description, they are not tulip tree moth eggs either.

I doubt they are lepidoptera.

I now have one myself. Found it on common milkweed.

I just found one on my paw-paw too! One of the ones that found yesterday disappeared today - I will try to contain the other one and maybe we will get an answer to this.

I brought in the one I found so I'm hoping to figure it out too.

I raised prometheas one year sometime since 2005. I found them to be high maintenance (I know others who do not). Plus I had added them to my repertoire so I could show them at the schools where I do presentations. The kids had basically no interest in them because prometheas compared poorly size wise with my cecropias and polyphemus. Hence, why I raised them just the one year.

Definitely not lepidoptera. I'm thinking probably hemiptera. Came out on Saturday.

Awww it's cute! Great picture Jeanne.. Yes, true bug family. Either assassin or leaf footed bug. That's my guess today.

I like raising the prometheas. They call at 4 PM, a more reasonable hour.

By the way I was out at Mt. St. John's today and saw more than I have seen in a while. Spicebush, tiger, hairstreaks, hackberry, cross-line skippers. It was nice.

I've also had pearl crescents, question mark, red-spotted purple, zebra swallowtail, spicebush, painted lady, sulphurs, easter-tailed blue, spring azures, great-spangled fritallary and hackberry. And lots of luna moths this year, all males so far. But the very, very best was a cedar hairstreak - I was so excited I almost messed in my pants! And of course by the time that I returned with the camera, it was gone. But I sure hope there is a next time!

jeanner, your little 'hopper' appears to be a katydid (maybe grasshopper) nymph. Cute.

Assassin bug or leaf-footed bugs don't lay their eggs singly but in pretty large masses. Have your eggs hatched, yet?

kcclark...those eggs appear to be those of the Ash plant bug. They are typically deposited on the small twigs. Your pictures are a match.

Also, since we are on the subject, I've been finding these little gold oblong but kind of flat on three sides egg-looking things on random plants. They really look like gold, not just gold-brown or like GST. I brought a couple in but after a week or two they did nothing, then I needed the container or something so I never saw anything. Since we are on the subject.

I love your tiger swallowtail picture. We have to have you come give a slide show. I love cedar hairstreaks! I see them occasionally at Cox. I have to do a double take because they look so unlike any of the other hairstreaks. I have yet to see a red spotted purple this year. Last year we saw many of them. There must be quite a few giants because I am finding a lot of caterpillars but have not seen any adults. Weird.

Thanks rhizo. Not what I wanted to hear but I knew there was an excellent chance they were Hemiptera and not Lepidoptera. I knew they did not match any Ohio saturnids but I was hoping for sphinx or some other large moth. I'll go take my sleeves off the branches ;)
