Big problem, out of aristolochia californica

Three pipevine caterpillars left and no more aristolochia californica. They are about 5 weeks old. Last two days they went after the vine with a vengeance. Now they are wondering around looking for more.

I've called every nursery around with no luck. Can't understand why most California nurseries don't carry more California natives?

What should I do?

Do you have stems as they will eat them. I ran out last year and the cats went into pupa and hatched well this year. 5 weeks is the usual cat time. I had a female emerge yesterday which surprised me.

Edna, I don't know how far you are from Vallejo but if you have wheels and are really in a bind I have so much pipevine it is incredible. You are welcome to all you need. You could probably take a bunch and store it like Larry said to (ladobe). Anyway, I offer it just in case you are near enough to drop over and pick it up. I have no wheels at the moment so I can't be of any help that way. Otherwise, maybe Penny's idea would work.

I wish I had an answer for why the native plants like pipevine is not sold at local CA nurseries. But that reminds me of another idea. Perhaps your chapter of the Native Plant Society has some. I have spoken in the past to the Napa Chapter and they had some in their greenhouse. Let us know what works. Murray

Hi Andapanda, I live in Northern California, near San Jose. This plant was outside all winter and our winter temps are right on the edge of being able to kill it off (its minimum is supposed to be 28 F). We don't get too hot in the summer, usually only 80 during the day, 55 at night. I understand a lot of people grow these in the South. This is a picture of my plant on Saturday; one flower mostly closed up but another opened this morning. As far as the kiwi, 'Issai' is special in a couple respects. It is smaller than both most hardy or fuzzy kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa). The latter in particular is a real monster. It is also somewhat self-fertile, so that you don't need a male plant. So with one small plant, we can fit it into a much smaller space than two big plants. And we don't have much space. So that's the only kiwi I'm interested in. In terms of pollination for your plant, I understand the larger fuzzy kiwis are just as good as one of the smaller hardy males. The only thing is they have to bloom at the appropriate time for there to be pollen (although I imagine there's a way to save some...). I also remember reading that you'd have to wait at least a year for a rooted cutting to bloom. I've never personally rooted them, but I'm under the impression it's pretty easy. If water alone doesn't work, you might want to consider some sort of mix of perlite and/or vermiculite and/or peat. I'm sure there are all sorts of recipes on line and everyone has their favorites. I like either pure perlite, perlite + vermiculite or perlite + peat. I'm trying to trade the rooted cuttings I have right now for a couple very specific things, but the Aristolochia vines grow fast and I'll be taking more cuttings (probably quite a few) in the next few months. So if you're interested in a cutting--rooted or unrooted, depending on what I have, check back in 2 or 3 months. Actually, since I don't give my "normal" email address out here, if you think you might be interested it's probably best to drop a note now to my plant only address--I look at that pretty infrequently most of the time. By the way, if you think this flower is big, there is a variety of this plant--usually it's considered its own species these days: Aristolochia gigantea var. brasiliensis or Aristolochia brasiliensis. The myrica is a decent sized shrub - can produce a 10-12' spread so will become a huge chore to keep pruned to a 2' width. And I'm not at all sure will look very attractive pruned that severely. Same with the privet - not as wide as the wax myrtle for sure but too wide for the space available without very frequent trimming to keep the walkway walkable. This is a situation that cries out for bamboo - evergreen, fast growing with a range of available heights and able to maintain a very narrow profile. Depending on the specifics of the planting conditions you might not be very limited to species but any of the clumping bamboos will work beautifully and without problems. btw, your local nurseries are feeding you a line. No shrub will grow as fast as they describe immediately after planting, ideal SoCal climate or not. They need time to establish and develop a root system and that doesn't happen immediately. You could expect 3' tall shrubs to hit 6-7 feet in a couple of years, not a couple of months.

Here is some information based on my personal experiences with growing different types of Pipevine from seed and otherwise: Fimbriata grows well from seed and germinates fairly quickly. If you are in Texas, that would be first choice for ease of germination and growth. I got my seed from someone on one of the forums last year. You could do a search for "Fimbriata seeds" and find out who had them. I am getting little "pipes" on my plants. If they get pollinated, I should have some seed this fall. Since I live in Oklahoma, the Fimbriata is not hardy here and I'll have to give it winter protection, or start again from seed. I also planted Serpentaria seed last fall and it germinated. It takes a long time for the plants to get any size; whereas the Fimbriata grew rather quickly. Rod Angeroth offered the seed on our forum last fall, so watch for his posting. The Serpentaria plants have been the first choice of the Pipevines in my yard. Second choice has been Tomentosa. As soon as I find the caterpillars on the Serpentaria, I move them over to the Tomentosa to conserve the Serpentaria plants for egg laying. I have a seed pod on my Tomentosa but it hasn't matured yet. I'll see what happens when I plant the seeds as to whether it germinates easily. I may have some extra seeds to spare. Since this is my first time to have a pod mature, I don't know what to expect. My Tomentosa plants were either purchased or collected from outside my neighborhood where it grows wild. It is very hard to get the cuttings to root. I've had minimal success doing this. Clematitis takes a long time to germinate. After 6 months, 2 of my dozen seeds germinated. Those 2 plants have taken off. I have purchased 6 more plants from a native plant vendor, and Susan gave me a start. So far the Clematitis has been ignored in my garden. But, I think that it will be discovered as it spreads. I have Macrophylla also, but that has been my slowest grower, and it hasn't had any attention from the Pipevines. The best deal on A. tomentosa can be found at the link below, which is from Mail Order Natives and they are still shipping. My prices are a little higher at times, but I do occasionally run sales and will always consider offers. I can also locate plants that are not listed in my store. Please consider my store when shopping for plants. The money that I raise from my store goes back to nature. I am currently raising money, and have set aside a good deal of my own money, to acquire extremely biologically diverse land along the San Jacinto River that is threatened by strip mining. It is truely an aweful sight what is left behind. This is where I grew up, and it breaks my heart to see the forest turned into a desert in the name of more concrete. I'm hoping the cats go into pupa. Geez, Monarchs are so much easier to raise.

I know the feeling! I now have FIVE plants for my next batch...of course, the PVS I've had have all eclosed and all at different times so I haven't had any eggs. This one guy told me he saw a PVS just this past week (probably one of mine) fly by his house. Too bad you didn't live closer. I ordered two plants from Forest Farm.

There never seems to be enough Pipevine to go around. One year I was in the same situation as you. So I went out & purchased all the Pipevine I could get my hands on. Now, I haven't seen a PVS in almost 3 1/2 years & like Murray, have lots & lots & lots of Pipevine everywhere with no PVS's to consume them! Feast or Famine I tell ya.

Last year was the first I had enough pipevine to get the girls all excited laying, but the @%$%@# wasps got most if not all of the cats. This year I've had tons of cats, a zillion eggs, and haven't seen any chrysalides no matter how hard I look. Any ideas? It grows on a chainlink fence just upfence from a climbing rosebush....

Hi Edna, I just sent you an email. Don't panic although I have often awakened to find angry and hungry PVS cats and know the feeling. Any way that I can help it would be fine for me. Just let me know. Murray

I know the wasps have been fierce this year and even though I saw a fair number of adult PVSs this spring looking over the pipe vine I never found any eggs or cats. But a month or so ago I walked out my front door and saw two or three yellow jackets on top of one little cat and they were stinging it over and over again and literally tearing it apart before my eyes. It made me sick and angry and after almost killing them with my hands on the spot I got some cloth and covered the vines as much as possible until the cats were ready to pupate. I don't think the wasp predation is so bad after the cats reach a size too large to be carried off to a nest but until then they are horrible on cats. Murray
