Thwarting bambi - need a substitute

Crumbs .....

Just down the hillside in the same neighborhood the deer are not eating the Arbutus marina trees but a few hundred feet up the hill they are enjoying the newly planted Arbutus tree.

We need a substitute for the Arbutus that is full proof ( ha ha ha ) against these marauding deer.

I'm enclosing a pix of this newly installed landscape so you can see the context.

The sub. tree should be a nice 'transition ' foliaged tree.

One that would blend well with the end of the landscape and beginning of the native scape.

I've thought of Melaleuca but the foliage doesn't seem 'large' enough.

Exposure is south west but a steep hill with huge eucalyptus blocks much of the sun . Property is not too far away from the ocean. zone 17. ( on the way to muir woods - marin )

An olive tree would be too silver and conifer may be too large.

Any suggestions ?
