Nearly 40 years old.....but what am I?

Hi there,

I hope someone can help.

I've had this cactus for nearly 40 years. It started out about the size of a golf ball and has grown, slowly, to be over a foot tall and VERY prickly.

I have never known what species it is and I have been unable to track down much on the net.

Can anyone identify it from the picture?

It lives on a windowsill in a draughty porch in the Scottish Highlands and seems quite happy.

The reason for the interest, after all this time, it seems to be fruiting (or having a baby !!).

The little growths in the picture have been there for a few months. They are like little nuts, wrapped in cat-fur !!

Now, suddenly, one of the growths has started to turn into some sort of fruit or offspring.

Should I do anything to help it?

Any help or info would be much appreciated.

Dougie

Scotland.
