OT Itchy fingers

OK so I have been so utchin to get outside and do something!! Being that we are having decent weather and it is mid march I gave in to my impatience and uncovered 2 of my lily beds today cuz I saw things pokin out, for the last 2 weeks. All it took was an email from the NJ garden & flower show to tell me it was time, I checked the 10 day forecast, & I was out there. Felt so good to get my hands dirty and muddy, sayin hi to all those happy fat worms, lol. I am in full spring mode now. In those 2 lily beds I counted 263 lilies poppin up already! Some are a good 10" tall already. I am so happy!! So much other stuff is poppin too, lotsa green under those leaf blankies..but I controlled myself enuf to just peek at those and only uncover those 2 lily beds, lol. Transplanted 3 rose of sharon trees as well..I hope they dont die. 7 more days till the first day of spring!! Gonna be 60 tomorrow, woohoo!! So, tomorrow I will do my spring pruning.

I have a question for those of you that have irises; when you put mulch down in your beds w/irises, do you cover the top of the bulb that is exposed? It's supposed to be uncovered right? So do you just put mulch around it, or do you put just a really thin layer over the exposed part? Hopefully I will have some money this summer to get some nice looking mulch for my beds, and I am worried about that. I don't want to make them rot.

I try not to mulch my iris. When I do I get those gross iris borers and they give me the willies. They might look like a delicacy in the Amazon Basin but to me they are just nasty!

Daniella,I don't know about everyone else,but my iris are planted if not they would be so top heavy they would fall over.

I have some poison oak around my house. Just wear gloves, long sleeves, and long pants. BE VERY CAREFUL, and you will be fine. You might have a little reaction here and there, but it will pass. The truth is you should tackle it while you are broke out. There are a lot of myths about it. Myth 1: You CANNOT spread it by scratching. Some places break out earlier than others, so it seems to be spreading. Myth 2: Everywhere exposed will break out. Also not true. If you get the oil on your skin, and wash it off properly (and quickly) it will not break out. I generally break out once a year, always in the same place. I see a piece trying to come back and just yank it out with my bare hands. Then I wash, but I always seem to forget to remove my wedding ring. So, that area of my finger breaks out, but not the rest of my hands. One year I will not make that mistake...but not yet!!!

Hi, I am new to this particular forum but not to Gardenweb. One thing I noticed was that a lot of you talked about your dogs having hot spots - I wanted to make sure to suggest comfrey salve to you to heal those VERY quickly. I grow my own comfrey and make my own salve in quantity for my use and my 6 dogs, but you can also find it in your local natural foods store more than likely. Make sure if you put it on them you cover it so the dog can't lick it as comfrey can cause liver damage when taken internally. But the stuff is amazing. On the topic of feeding home-cooked, I have had great luck with the following when I have had a furkid with pancreatitis, or a puppy sick from tummy surgery, etc. In a large bowl I mix: 2 cups cooked brown rice 1 large jar baby food in a vegetable/meat combination any leftover plain cooked meat I have, chopped small (or baby food meat sticks if I don't have leftovers) 1 hard boiled egg, chopped 1 banana, mashed into mixture Mix and serve!

I feel you all of you in the colder climates. We got colder than I thought the other night and my small aloe got zapped. It didn't seem to hurt anything else though so maybe its because John is watering it to death, lol. I am going to have to hide the things that don't need much water from him. They all get soaked equally every evening but I hate to discourage him since he is enjoying the flowers and helping me out. I just try to gently point out see this one thats rotten? Its a cactus and doesn't need much water, lol. He has decided watering is his job. I found my cuttings of varieagated jade plant sitting in a bowl of water drowning and he said I though those needed more water they don't look right, lol. Poor things. I am slowly teaching him what I am trying to root and what needs a lot of water and what doesn't. We get to feed them all tomorrow and he is excited, lol. He can't wait for the brugs to start blooming. The big one is putting on a lot of new leaves so it won't be long before it kicks in again. I want to see the new ones bloom!

Boy does this bring back memories! Remember when we were all bidding on ebay and had a few screens opened so we could post on GW, bid on ebay, and check our emails? We told each other what our ebay name was so we wouldn't bid against each other. I think after that is when ebay started encoding the bidders' names. We were doing the same thing, grabbing stuff to munch on or having a drink(s) of choice, and were all high on excitement, LOL!

Karyn, just sprinkle a like Comet on top of the soil in your iris bed and those little borers will go away! We go throught 7 large cans in the spring as we have a lot of the poor man's orchids!!

Daniella sounds like you had a blast! I just love getting my hands dirty which is why I have nooo nails to speak of lol!
Comet is a new one on me- will have to try that sometime.
