I'll try not to ramble, but want to let people know that I apreciate the knowledge offered here, and the friendliness of all.

I posted on the exchange forum a short while ago, and was contacted by some sweet people, you all are great! I am new to the Brug-scene, and wonder why it took me so long.

Also, I have many questions, most of which I will scan the postings to see what answers I can find.

I did purchase some cuttings from KatsKuntryKuttins, and they really came in great shape. I was afraid the weather would be too cold, but the Brug-God was on my side there. Now, as I look at them, 4 days potted, hardly any leaf damage, I am wondring if they may bloom this year ?.?. They are about 8 inches tall,about the diameter of my pinkie finger, fair amount of roots, and all have 6-8 leaves or more. I used soil moist in with the potting soil, and a product to help prevent transplant shock, as well as getting plants off to a good start. ( Can't remember the brand name.) We have a large aquarium, 120 gallons, which I take the water from to water the plants, and hope it will help with nutrients.

I have been watching E-Bay , and have seen some great looking plants there. I am amazed at the color variations !!(The "Chief" is too rich for me !)

Is there a better time of the year to buy brugs ? What size should I be looking for to see blooms this summer ?

And if I take cuttings, is it better in the fall , to get plants that bloom the next summer ? So many Questions.....

I do admit that I suffer from a well known family condition , I call it "EXCESS".. If one is good, ten will be even better!! And Twenty would be Heaven!! On and on.... Thank goodness for a great understanding and patient husband!!!!!

He puts up with my "EXCESS" like a trooper. He has chauffered me on many of my hunts, and seems to have a good time, at that!

Hi Sandra,
There's a very good chance that your cuttings will bloom this season. They are very heavy feeders during the growing season. Fish tank water is great (I use it occasionally as well) but they'll need additional fertilizer. I start with a balanced fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season and switch to a bloom booster (high middle number) for the remainder of the season. I stop feeding about 4 weeks before they are brought in for the winter. When you get blooms from a cutting can depend on where on the plant the stem was cut from. If it was taken above the "Y" you should get very early blooms, if below it will take longer for the plant to form a "Y". Good luck with your brugs. I'm sure you will enjoy them.

Isn't that the truth! I write down step-by-step directions and keep them in a file, otherwise I will never be able to remember if too much time passes. (I get my guru hubby to demonstrate slowly while I take notes frantically!) I look forward to seeing the pictures too!

What a wonderful day indeed! Having met three of the four of you, I can attest that you all got on fabulously and had a lot to talk about! The closest Penzey's to me is about an hour, so I usually drive 7 hours and go to the one in Oak Park IL! Go figure... Love TJ's and Whole Foods, too but again, they're along way from my home in the "boonies". But they are opening a new TJ's this coming summer/fall only 1/2 mile from my work, so I see lots of paychecks being spent there in the near future! Glad you all could get together, and really glad you get to enjoy some sunshine. Not sure when I'll see the sun again around here! LOL Linda

sheesh! I just realized I'm my mother all over again! :) Not long ago I mentioned in another post about my son getting a dog that he can't afford to properly care for. What did I do? I became my mother (and y'alls too!) and fussed him out. It's become a daily thing, although I have to say for myself, I have been "advising" rather than fussing. At least, trying to. Currently researching housebreaking an older dog.... AND to stop jumping on people. This one is really burning me up... I'm sick to death of dirty paw marks on my clothes when visiting! This is the most unruly dog I've ever seen. And son and his family aren't helping by letting the dog dart out the door ahead of them, getting his feet dirty and then jumping. They're too overwhelmed with the 2 kids they have to attempt to train a dog on a consistant basis. It's almost a lost cause, I'm afraid, yet it doesn't stop me from "advising". We had discussed bringing the dog to my house for a good start but I'm pretty sure my golden wouldn't appreciate such bad behavior around him. And I KNOW the cats wouldn't! I would just like to be able to help out.... for the dog's sake. Sometimes I wish I could muzzle and leash my kids.. grown, or not! Grrrrrr!

Well, I'll just make a comment here and not post any photos because I don't have anything that looks any different than any of you have. My experience here in mid-Minnesota, in sandy loam under dappled shade from oaks, with regular irrigation using lake water, has been pretty good. It's DEFINITELY a slow grower. But I haven't had it just out-and-out die. My most recent problem is that it's sporting back. Last year I took a true division of it and planted it in a different location. In this spot it will get bright shade (no direct sun but nothing overhead either) for morning, sun from 1 pm to 5 pm during the longest days of summer, then shade again. Sun exposure will vary with sun height over the course of a day. I'm not sure how it will perform there - perhaps it will bleach out - but I'm hopeful I may be able to develop a clump that'll be sport-free for a while.

Welcome and Happy Easter. I'm up waiting for the Easter bunny!!!

One thing I'm sure you remember from gathering info on brugs is they don't like wet feet. Keep your babies a little on the drier side. This will make them happier and discourage fungus gnats. Make sure your soil is not too deep in the pot and the soil is very fast draining.

Amen to what everyone else has already said. Welcome to our little bit of heaven on earth. This is the best bunch of people you will find on the entire Garden Website. Of course I'm being bias. LOL This is where I hang my gloves and hat when I'm tired and just want to see what all is going on.

Seems like all your questions got answered, I just wanted to say..Welcome Sandra! Don't worry 'bout it, I'm a rambler too, lol. I can make 3 paragraphs outta one question, lol. Welcome to the family, lol. You will fit right in. I usually ramble more but I am tired from my trip. I'll yack more later. If you are looking for some larger plants try seedsprouts or country gardens. They send huge ones! See I will enable your addiction right away, lol.

And you're right, 1, 3, 5 are JUST not enough. You'll have to get about 20 or so, ok? And this forum is the place that can do it for you. (grin)

And DON'T pay any attention to that Mike sibhskylvr guy. He's a total enabler and will have you at 50 or so before you know it. (grin)

Oh, and just an FYI? There isn't any 12 step program to help you once you're hooked with Brugs.

You won't bother with roses or any other high maintenance plants after brugs. They grow fast, recover from boondoggles - and bloom over and over the same season. And there's a smell for each person out there, from smelling like roses to baby powder, to lemons. What ever you want.

Welcome and enjoy, we're glad you're with us and decided to join. You won't find a nicer more giving group of people on the net, both in knowledge, time and energy.

And belive it or not, I'm the biggest twit on here with failures, and they'll stick with you until you get it right. (Speaking from experience)

I again , want to thank everyone for the warmth, and kindness they have shown here. The humour reminds me of "Family"... Make any sense ? I check here everyday when I can , and enjoy reading the posts. And I am learning so much it almost hurts !! My DH just sits back and rolls his eyes..... ( Good exercise , if you ask me..)
I also scan the Brug sales on E-Bay. Cant wait till I get caught up on bills to get a few plants from triggerman. The prices are good,and plants look perfect!!
I saw someone selling just the roots. From what I've seen with my one and only blooming size Brug, I wouldn't think you could do a root division, unless it's huge.... I have a few Bamboos, and understand dividing the offshoots, but on a Brug ??
And from what I can tell, cuttings are good, but I am so leary of getting cuttings that are not yet rooted. I am not that comfortable with "the Unknown"...
Well, I need to run. Today is my day off and the weather is good today- forcasting to be rainy and cold tomorrow. ( I work at U-Haul, and have been accused of having Orange Blood, our days off vary considerably, but I take what I can get...) One of these days, when I have time , I would love to share a story about my brother, and canaries......It also makes my husband go on a roll. And DH is having fun throwing it back at me now with the brugs !!

Welcome!! just one Brug will never work.. Instead of spending money on cuttings just mention a few you might enjoy and most of the time they just show up at your door step.Come Fall there will be plenty to go around...I look forward to seeing you around!! Enjoy your day off!!!
