Can someone I D this for me please?

Saw it, had to have it... imagine that!

Hi Rose,

I'd say that that plant has areoles, and if you have areoles...well, if your plant has areoles, you have to have a cactus, right?

Maybe a Harrisia of some nonspecified species?

Wow, Rose...that's a confusing one! Jeff's right, it has areoles (or seems to), but it sure looks like a Euphorbia to me, too. Good luck! Whatever it is, it's pretty. Can't wait to see what it really is!

Lynn: it is not a African milk tree, but thank you for trying. Joe: The stem is definitely large, about 20 cm wide, it is not Euphorbia ingens, but agree that it is some similar species.

Enterotoxigenic00, Thank you for sharing that picture of your plant, it's beautiful!! Maybe someday my baby will get that big, a million years from now lol. I'm trying to get mine use to the sun since I don't know how long it was inside the store and if it's ever even been outside. Euphorbias do not look nice when they don't have enough sun light...I really hope my plant is even a medusoid type, I'll be kinda disappointed if not, now that I've seen what a beauty it can grow into. Bikerdoc, Your plants are awesome also, even though I love Euphorbias, I never really look into the medusa types (I've seen them many times online but have never actually really paid attention to them), so I've never noticed how many different types there was. But that's why I love plants, it's a never ending learning experience, Even after years of collecting and researching, I'm always discovering something new. The only thing now is that I may have to go and order all the different types now online lol. Actually they are going on my list to buy but I have a few others I need to buy first as soon as this 100 plus degree weather calms down... k, It's certainly one of the more uncommon Kalanchoes available - lucky you. Kalanchoes and Jades (Crassula ovata) are in the same plant family, the Crassulaceae. And then there's the whole 'plants of the Arabian Peninsula and nearby islands' that never fails to weaken my knees.

"but give them a big drink at least once a month." Just curious, but is a big drink once a month a good idea? I was under the impression that if you let a plant go completely dry for awhile then flooded it, you'd really risk inducing rot since all the roots would've died back a bit in the interim, whereas you don't get that problem if you're just giving smaller quantities of water or grading-up to more frequent summer watering. On the other hand, you need to thoroughly soak the potting media to actually rinse out the various salts and stuff that accumulate, too. This probably isn't an issue with a totally ideal potting mix although I didn't really have access to turface and fired clay and the like when I did all my repotting this summer. Although, in any case, at least some winter watering seems to cut down on mealies. Also euphorbias seem like they're more tolerant of weird watering schedules than cacti anyway. And euphorbias also seem to be more willing to show you when they're thirsty. I have a way easier time with euphorbias than cacti in general. Can you tell? ;)

Actually, I think it is a euphorbia. There is a group of euphorbs that have areole-ish growths, along with those tell-tale pairs of short spines. I wish I could tell more, but I can't find an exact photo match in my books. I look forward to others (with more expertise than me) weighing in...

Look at the roots and if you have some tubers down there, I'd say Euphorbia knuthii. When I had mine, I'd lift the plant about every two years to expose more root, at one point I had that jumble of roots almost 10" high.

Ok everyone, I have taken a small cut and it does have all that wonderfully poisonous milk sap. It is growing rather spread out in the pot, so will also check on that root situation just to see. I thank you all for the input and will get back to you about the root system.

Frank, if it does have that root mass like in the photo's you have provided, should I slowly bring up the root ball to be exposed?
At least for now, it has a name! : )

there may be other opinions but in my experience the root caudex develops better if grown underground in a deep pot for a long while. When of certain size you then may expose it.

By the way, if the branches become grayish and pendant after some years it's a good idea to cut them all off. The remaining motherplant, well watered, fertilised and placed in full sun after the pruning, soon looks particularly nice when crowned by a number of colourful, fresh and erect shoots. (That's one of the tricks used to win a prize at a c&s exhibition.) The cuttings taken soon build new caudices.
