Hoovb, your pal is precious ! Each pet-pal has a way to endear themselves to us, and enter our heart... maybe it's a bird or a gerbil or a 'coon, I was in the pet-food store the other day and a guy came in with a possum riding on his shoulder, she had a harness and leash on and was just adorable, he found her as a baby and raised her and she lives with him, uses a litter-box and eats cat-food... her fur was soft like a kitten, they are almost blind but have extra senses like smell and hearing, etc., and she loved being petted...... so there you go, we all have our weaknesses..... and wouldn't give them up because they sustain us in our times of need...............sally

Something new going after my Spicebush Swallowtail cats

We did our local July 4th NABA Butterfly count yesterday. I helped my friend Amy at Redbud Valley, one of our local nature areas. Amy is a naturalist, employed by the city of Tulsa. She works at Oxley Nature Center and Redbud Valley. Everyone wanted to do Oxley, as there is lots of nectar available right now, so it was just the two of us. Anyway, part of the hike goes through an area of Spicebush, so we checked out the plants. There was lots of evidence of predation. We found two small live caterpillars, one in a leaf roll with a mass of eggs on the underside. The eggs were so small, they could only be seen with a magnifying glass. Amy sent the two live cats home with me to raise. I'll return them to the area when they eclose. I removed the leaf with the eggs on it, and moved the cats to a small potted Spicebush. The temps here were 104 in the afternoon. We were exhausted and extremely sweaty after our 4 hour up and down hike. Not much nectar available, and not many bugs out--just 19 species. I know this is an old post that I started nearly 4 years ago. But I wanted to let Y'all know how things turned out with my Buddy. I had him fixed a few months after the first post. He kept on hunting and became an indoor/outdoor cat. He never made a mess, always used the litter box from day one or went outside to relieve himself. We became the best of friends, he was like a dog! He cuddled, slept with me, followed me everywhere, and ate breakfast with me on weekends. He loved scrambled eggs!! When I would come home from work he would run to greet me if he was outside. If I didn't get right out of my truck he would be on the hood looking in and meowing! If he was inside he would be looking out of the window waiting on me, then greet me at the door. He was so adorable!! And he still loved the garden, he was by my side every day, doing his part in the garden! But sadly he died last November from leukemia. If only I had known that he should have been vaccinated for it he would probably be with me now. He was very protective of his territory and fought with a lot of cats that were invading his territory. That is probably how he got the disease. I had my other cat tested and vaccinated a week after he died.

Too much water could be the problem. Also, if you are in the US, there shouldn't be too many places where it isn't warm enough to be outside now. Introduce it to the sun, wind and other elements outside slowly, but get it out there. The fresh air will do it good and should help to dry out the soil a bit. Just don't plunk it down in blazing sun all at ounce. But the plant doesn't look all that bad really.

No clue....I put the one on the trellis (blue) when I first built the house, and as usual, over time, I lose the tags. I'm really terrible with names!

Clematis really don;t take the heat well, and here they're already starting to die back, even the morning sun....I read that if you take a large pot, dig a hole in the ground, invert the pot, and put the growing crown in the hole-and cover it, that it sill stay cool......neat idea.

Yes, clematis does like it's roots cool and in the shade. That's why they grow so well planted with shrubs. I usually either mulch heavily, or cover them with stone pavers. In your zone, though, I imagine it would be even more difficult to grow them, but it sure is pretty, Paul!

Wow, Paul! Now that is truly an impressive cage. :) I bet there are folks out there who do a CAT CAGE search and will come across this as a link and think, "What the heck?! I don't see anythink that remotely resembles a cat in these pictures!" tee-hee!

Penny...hee hee! ....but it barely holds me! I bought 48" nylon screen from Lowe's, and made a frame 48" high so I could wrap around and staple. I keep a lot of live plants in there.

Paul,

Loved your pictures-Monarch habitat,clematis, passionflower, all your container plantings, such healthy looking plants in your butterfly garden, AND OF COURSE YOUR MASTERPIECE-THE CAT CAGE. Can't wait to get more shots of your evolving garden. I'm esp. curious to see how your paths are working out.

Any luck with your search for some solution for your health issue?

Hey Mike.....thanks! I'm going to take some pictures from the 3rd floor....I hired someone new to do the pond...it's almost done...he's done a fabulous job.....but at a price that was not too long ago my annual salary OUCH .

No luck....I think I know more than the Dr's do.....I recently went to Duke for a test....all clean. But that doesn't stop the pain. Still working on it. Any suggestions for a good gut Dr?

PS I just made my first order to the nursery you reccomended..his prices are extremely reasonable. Awaiting my first shipment.

more questions Do the cats as they form pupas hung on the screening? Are you mixing different species of cats in the cage. When you clean do you just move it over or does it have a bottom? What is the zippered door from?
