Harbor Freight greenhouse

Jerry, These are Greenhouses are 10' x 12' and come from Harbor Freight. Since you will have all summer to get one, you can wait for a sale. These list at like $850.00ish but I saw them on sale as low as $599.00 last summer, so watch for the sales. Harbor freight also sells kits with really nice aluminum plant benches and shelves. I bought 2 sets and it fills up the greenhouse very nicely.

They are priced at $799.00 now. Found a $300.00 off coupon on ebay. Good till 4-17-2011.
You ever had troubles with yours? Snowloads? Sagging doors?
Everything I've read about this product (buyers comments) is that you have to do a lot of additional bracing and tapeing of panels so they don't blow away.
For the price, it is still a great deal even with the extra re-inforceing. We have a Harbor Freight store in MPLS/St. Paul so I can pick up direct and save on shipping.

Jerry, The only problem that I had was not having enough of the wire panel clips. When you purchase it you should buy an extra package of 100 clips. They are cheap and Harbor Freight should have them. I don't use the greenhouse in the winter so it had a foot or so of heavy snow on it at times with no problem. I read about people needing to brace and such, but no problems here. I suppose if you don't have any trees around the yard the wind could be a problem. I love it.

Dear Waterstar, Yes, I agree it is confusing! It took me many readings of Sunny John's site to understand how it works. I am not sure about the foundation. I think it is possible to excavate, install the tubing and then backfill the ground flat enough to put the greenhouse on brick but you probably need to mechanically compact the soil. You should insulate the heat sink around the perimeter to protect your heat from being siphoned away by the frost layer. About clay soils Sunny John says, "Our experience shows that heavier subsoils continue to act as good heat sinks if the tubing has 6" of subsoil above it (8" OC from the surface) You should go deeper if your soil mass is lower." Whether on not it makes sense for your greenhouse, I don't know. It seems to me that your greenhouse is a little small for this system but I have heard of people using SHCS in a small greenhouse and being happy with it. Sunny John did say that having the tubes at least 30 feet in length is optimal. For the greenhouse I am building it will only be 20 feet and I am using stone for the storage medium. I would not worry too much about soil/clay getting into the tubes unless you are in an area with a high water table. If you are, I would use stone because then the water can come in and out without bringing in any mud. Contact David Roper. He is wonderfully helpful!

Looks like the Harbor Freight 6x8. Here is a link to the page on the Harbor Freight website, where you can download the manual (with a parts list.) Also shows photos of the frame so you can compare. Download manual for 6x8 Harbor Freight I have the 10x12, so I'm a bit more familiar with the base on that one. The 10x12 comes with a steel base, but it looks like the 6x8 only comes with base plates designed to be attached to wood timbers in the ground. I'd inspect the base pieces to make sure they're OK. You can order parts from Harbor Freight for these greenhouses, but some parts are not normally stocked by them, and some are special order. I'd be a bit worried that something like base pieces might take a long time to ship to you. (Heads up, HF always used to tell folks it would take about three weeks to get non-standard parts, and six months later they were still waiting.) In my hot climate the panels only last 3-4 years (less if not using shade cloth.) Those panels may be fine for years to come, but you can always order more panels if you need to (panels and clips are standard items and usually ship quickly.) You can get a quote on a whole new set of panels if you call Harbor Freight, if you're curious. The aluminum frame in these is softer than the aluminum you buy at the box stores. Transport it carefully, the pieces may bend more easily than you'd suspect. It should unbolt pretty easily unless the previous owners got creative with some other kinds of more permanent fasteners. I know some folks would say that these kits are so inexpensive that it would be better to just buy a new one, but I'm a scavenger/bargain hunter myself, so I can see the appeal of making it work. Either one will work. If you put down a wood base, make sure it is rot resistant. The only advantage I can think of for going to the extra work and expense of putting it on a wood base is that it raises the roof height a bit.

I had one of those Harbor Freight 10 by 12's it was quite sturdy but the glazing did not have any UV preventive coating and it yellowed in a year. I don't know if they ever addressed that issue, I know I had it a year before I realized it and the warrantee was up. Check to be sure the glazing panels are treated while you have a warrantee.

We have a HF and used quite a few modifications including securing the panels with screws in addition to using the clips. Someone recently posted a link to someone's blog about building this GH. That's the one we went by and the GH has withstood several storms with winds in excess of 60 mph. I think that I've had this one for 3 years. The one issue I do have is with the sliding doors coming off track. All in all it's a decent GH. It's not a Rion but for $600 it's fine.

Hi Jerry-
My hubby and I just erected one of these HFGHs. We used the manual plus these instructions-

It went up without much incident. We had a pretty bad storm with winds of 30- 40 mph and it was fine. We will be installing those self tapping screws and rubber gaskets on the poly carbonate panels soon. I just love my gh! It was on sale when we bought it, and then we also found an online coupon, so we ended up paying $650 each. We bought 2 of them and hope to start the 2nd one soon.

I bought on about 3 yrs ago also.. Shortly after Karyn put hers up.. After reading all of the upgrades and Hubby has been in Construction for over 40 yrs. I decided to sell it on Craigs List.. Figured it would be just as easy to build one and be able to make it much bigger for the same price.
I didn't tell him I was buying it..LOL He just shook his head..
I got my money back and the Guy's Wife was all Giddy..LOL
