If there were only one kind of plant you could grow what would it be? I know this is a tough question and too some it maybe unfair. To make it a little easier you can include a second favorite. For me it would be the Echinocereus then Mammillaria's.

Dawn, your Mam looks like a stuffed Teddy bear sitting there! If it was half as soft as I looked, I'd be tempted to pick it up and give it a hug!

I'd have to pick Hoyas, but I still couldn't live without my Haworthias.

I have to agree with Denise on that teddy bear look! Didn't really strike me immediately but ...

My favourite right now - so hard to choose - I'd have to say euphorbia and then mammillaria, but then I feel bad to leave out the gymnocalycium and echinopsis.

The male goats urinate all over themselves constantly and the females they are mating with. You will know by the smell how far away to keep them and it's a LONG way! Their smell will permeate everything around, including the milk and anything else nearby. The folks I know with a few dairy goats for milk just have females and young ones. They take the females to another farm for mating when they come in heat. If the kids are male they sell them before they get very big. You could also put them in the freezer. Mature bucks can be very aggresive and hard to tame, as well, but that might depend on the breed. If you get a fertile buck, you will need to keep him way out in a large pasture, but not by himself. A whether makes a good companion for a fertile buck. I don't think you want to put two fertile bucks together as they might fight a lot. You can also shear some goats, or comb them when they shed. Mohair (from Angoras) and Cashmere both come from goats. I have not kept goats myself, but have friends who do. I am considering it for when I have more time, though. I'd like milk and cashmere. I want a spinning wheel :-)

Lot & block surveys in platted subdivisions are easy for a surveyer to research & measure. Acreage is often "metes & bounds", which means much more research, more painstaking measuring & comparing to other metes & bounds properties &, since fences & landmarks are oftenmoved or wrong, it often means several trips to measure the property. ' the property has fencing that has been there for over 50 years.' which means only that somebody put up a fence 50 years ago. I've had a few sales in which a new survey reveals surprises. Once a seller had to buy a strip of land from his neighbor because his driveway was actually on the neighbor's land. On this same sale, there was a fence on the side of the property, which we all took to be the boundary. until the buyer's fiance noticed scars on the trunks of a line of trees that was about 6' inside the fence line. turns out the scars were from the original, mostly correct fence that had been removed. about the title companies: There's a standard exception for boundaries in every title policy. You can pay a fee to have it removed, but the title company will remove it only if there's a fresh survey; in other words, if a surveyor can be held accountable for errors. If I were buying anything in this world, I'd want to be sure that what was delivered to me was what I intended to buy.

Hi calpat, I was crying about getting 40 or so spam a day - until I talked to my neighbour getting over a hundred ... A DAY! She let that box drop and is opening another. I've told some people unwilling to do legitimate surveys to get a different e-mail box - just for them. So if they get connected with a spammer, they just let the box go. Hardly any making these wonderful offers ever have a real address that they send from. By the way - had any offers of a potion to enhance the size of some of your female/male parts? Some of the over a hundred or so that I've got offer guaranteed overnight results. I've replied saying that I'd be afraid that would be painful. If I were a working person - I'd want to take it on the weekend - so I could stay up all night to watch the growth. If I subscribed to all of the hundred or so offers - how would I deal with the monster - backpack? Not big enough, wrong location. Kid's stroller? Can't put it on escalator in stores. Sling? Would be too heavy for my shoulders. Shopping cart? Too deep. Wheelbarrow? Now - that might just be what the doctor ordered! Need a *full-siized* van, of course, for longer trips. But - where could I find a partner who could accomodate my needs? Probably need to seek a mare, elephant, etc. Would need a pad to keep track of when they came in heat - they wouldn't want to talk to me at other times. Do the guys selling potions - also sell stepladders? I sometimes reply trying to sell them my newsletter about money management, as I've become concerned over the years in the personal financial planning business that so few know much about money management, that I'm keeping the letter going after retirement. Single copy free to anyone with e-mail address, they can subscribe if they wish. Should save them hundreds, more likely thousands, in their lifetime - unless they have one foot in the grave, now. Often people who get something at no cost give it little respect, this letter distills many years of experience, expensive training, etc. so it would be a mistake to give it away free, though I could afford to. I don't like to be arbitrary - so price of the newsletter is negotiable. Having been a number of years a clergyperson, I've tried not to be greedy, either - so will likely ask them to contribute most of the fee to charity, especially worldwide ones, as there are huge needs in many countries, these days. They can negotiate to send my newsletter to their friends, relatives, colleagues in community, sport, church, at work, etc. Will build their group of friends, make them famous - and help them raise some money, as they keep some of the (negotiated) fee, send most to charity - and send some to me, of course. This story is real, as a matter of fact - and it's all true. As for all of these guys who have these great money-making ideas ... what kind of business is such that the fellow working there, who wants to encourage you to do the same, is so proud of it that he tells you almost nothing about it in the original message - apart from how much one may possibly make? A company that keeps their door locked, and has an unlisted phone. Most of them don't give me an address to which I can send a message, go to ask a question, etc. - their front door is locked. Few give a phone number to call - and most who do have it lead to an agency. The email address that they use when sending the message is false - unlisted phone. Not only is the phone unlisted - the guy who sent the message is a liar. The only way that I can contact them - is to fill in a form, telling quite a bit about myself ... ... to leave your resume in the mail box, please ... Which quite a few may use to assemble a database - that they then sell - to other spammers. What chance does such a recruiter think that he may have - of getting me interested in his offer? I've had the same thoughts about that 'house is worth what' show. "The $5000 you spent on this bathroom upgrade will add $10000 to the home price!!" Snort. Of course, I also get annoyed at these people who are upset that their house *ONLY* appreciated 57% in two years. It's really an annoying show. I avoid it now.

Nice teddy bear, I can see that. As far as which is my favorite.... that's a hard one. I think xerophytic/pachycaul tress/shrubs are my favorite, Mamms a close second. It really depends on which day it is :-)

I'm going to have to be random on this one...If I could just grow one kind of plant, it would be succulents. I really can't narrow it down, because I like them all!

Hands down fave cacti would be Mammillaria. I have 3, one is in bloom now and my stupid camera wont work right! ugh. Then Gymno's. Now if you're asking any kind of plant, THAT is a tough one! : ) I know houseplants would be Sanseviera (sp?) but I also grow succulents, perennials, roses and shrubs. I couldnt pick in 100 yrs. Greenthumb, that Rebutia is wonderful! What is it? Oh, I have a large Echinofossulocactus on the way from ebay, I'll post pics-if I can!- when it arrives.

Dawn- Like the others have stated, the question you pose is a genuine headbanger:) But may we all consider this?
We may all have favourites for looks,blooming displays, foliage colouration etc, but could we really rule out the first plants that we aquired that were the prerequisite for our obsessions, for instance I have a Astro Myriostigma of the 7 ribbed variety and also a Cephalocereus Senilis (old man cactus) which I've had since small seedlings and would consider the loss of these plants an absolute nightmare. So perhaps my favourites are those which have been with me the longest, you do get attached you know:) I'm sure everyone out there can see where i'm coming from.
Enjoyed reading all you posts and hope for more head scratching questions in the future.

Hmmm...very difficult to answer, Dawn!

I suppose if I went out & counted to see which genera I have the most of, I might be able to tell you.

Right off the bat, I'll say Echeveria is a group I enjoy, but I really like Kate's answer:
Succulents!

For me if I had the choice of one Genus, I'd choose Mamms, and if push came to shove, I'd have to follow up with Echinopsis, (Lobivia specifically) followed closely by cacti and other succs, I think... :)

Scott, I started this thread just for fun. I was curious as to what everyone would say was their favorites. Like I said, I knew this would a tough if not sensitive subject for some. I could never rule out my first plant.

Denise, I love your Hoya and Haworthia. Very nice.

Jan, Nice collection of euphorbia's you have. I like your mamm's also.

Amy, Rosemarie and CP, somehow I got the feeling you were going to say that those were your favorites. Those are beauties you all have there.

Dan, Your Bursera fagariodes is beautiful. How old is it?

S&B, nice lithops. I love the brightness of the yellow in that flower.

Kate and Jen, Yes, it is very hard to choose a favorite. I thought about doing this thread a couple weeks ago but was affraid of the responses I would get. So far so good.

OK! From what I have in my collection now: Discocactus/Melocactus. I just love their cephaliums! (cephalium is the coolest word I learned last year). None of mine have the top hats yet, but I'm a waitin'.. I also like the Astros quite well, followed by..... but you said ONE!! Peace, joy, and love to all!! :-)

for me it is echs and well, most any crass - the plant that *really* hooked me was a sedum...but special nods to bill, and his honesty.
dawn, perhaps i am a dunce but i dont understand your reluctance to post this thread.

Jo, I don't know, I was afraid that someone would bash the heck out of me for posting such a thread. I got over it and posted the thread. So far we all seem to be having fun with it...especially Bill. Oh, btw Joe, your not a dunce, I am. I've gotten very good at it over the years just ask my husband, LOL :)

I am an off the wall Dudleya lover. I like the California and Baja connection. I have a dozen varities now but my favorite is absolutely the regal "chalk rose". This one is 15 inches across.

mdoneill: I had no idea there were Dudleyas that were that beautiful! I love it.

Dawn: I think this is a great post, because apart from being fun, and getting to see what everyone else loves to grow, it actually makes you think about something!

Dennis - that Dudleya is a beauty! I have yet to find anyone around here who can grow Dudleya. Someone once sent me one in a trade and it lasted about 5 months before it looked so awful I tossed it.

Bill, I just HAD to get out my Bible to look up your reference (and felt bad when I had to blow the dust off of it!) Anyway, as I was looking through my books for it, my husband asked what I was doing and I told him. He laughed and nearly quoted the passage - probably the only one he could quote (bad boy, bad boy!) So here it is, in the language of the "New International Version" (which I always felt more readable, though perhaps not 100% accurate...):

Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.

But I had to laugh when I read the next verse...

But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

Hm, beware all you who grow thorn-producing plants!! The wrath of God may be upon you!
