Question about selling Brugs

I think I may try to sell a couple of my Brugs on Craigs List this spring. These are 3-4 year old plants, dormant now and trimmed back to around 4 feet last fall. Before I trimmed them back (so I could get them into my basement for the winter), they were around 5-6 feet tall.

I don't plan on selling these until they are well-leafed out - probably sometime in May, but what do you think is a fair price to ask? Keep in mind, I'm in MN, so these aren't all that common around here. I absolutely love CL for selling things and have gotten very good prices for other plants I've sold. In fact, I think I've under-priced some of the plants I've listed, but it's better than simply giving them away. These days, $$$ are very welcomed.

So, what do you think?

Are they named?? Or are they NOIDS?
I sold several 31/2 ~4' ones (Cheurb) for $25 just to folks around here.. I would think you might do better on CL depending what they are...Be sure to post pic's of them in bloom.. Post pic's here..LOL

Kylie - They are named, but I haven't decided which ones to sell yet.

Just to give you an idea of what kind of $$ if received for some plants on CL, here's a few I can remember:

Yesterday I sold a bunch of Begonia grandis tubers for $7 each
Named orchds (nothing special) $10-15 each
Imperial Taro - $10 for a gallon sized pot

I REALLY do love CL!!

Hi Ellen, I wouldn't worry about the spots on the leaves, I have seen this before when leaves are deteriorating and dying. If your brug dries out a little too much, it will drop leaves. Just check that it is not dry - if it is potted in soilless mix, when you lift it, it will be as light as a feather. Give it some water so that the pot has weight to it. hope this helps you . Cassie I grew brugs in 1993. There were just a few varieties then and most were NOIDS because people would not tag them when they shared with friends and family. I got mine from some that were brought up from Florida. I think when hybridizing really took off was late 90's, early 2000, 2001 but that is just a guess. Brugs have come a long way in a very short time, compared to say how long it has taken daylilies to progress or amaryllis,or hostas. The original species and their natural hybrids came from South America. Some new varieties are still being discovered in the wild. ~Brenda

I had pretty much the same conditions as Mary but put one full sun bulb and one grow light bulb in the shop light fixture. I had a table beneath it that the cuttings were on and all the rest of my tropicals spread out through one side of the garage. I would leave the door open on nice days while I was at home and that was about it. Most did fine except the cuttings I got later around Christmas. I think if they get a little bit of a start and begin to root they would be ok like that. I don't know about starting cuttings with no light at all. It just doesn't seem like it would work. I had a small space heater in there that I kept on fan only but the heat part would kick in if it got too cold. It never got below 45 and that was on the very coldest night. Stayed about 50 with the doors closed. I am thinking about using the shed for the ones I want to go dormant since its dark and colder in there.

I did several in the window sill of the kitchen in water with only natural light. Others I did in the garage with florescent grow light when I ran out of room in the kitchen. I had a bunch in the dining room too in pots but they got put in the garage when the fungus gnats got so bad.

I have sold feeders and deer blinds on CL but that is about it..I do Love them tho.. SOO where are the pic's what are you thinking of selling..YEP I'm nosey.. You may have something I want!!! ;O)

Sorry, I lost all my pics of the plants in bloom when the 'puter died. These are probably the two I'll sell, or maybe just one of them. Can't decide.

I've been using CL is get rid of all that stuff in my house I no longer need or love that much anymore. It's just so strange how there seems to be a buyer for just about everything. Last week I found a pail of aquarium gravel in my basement and sold it within a couple of days for $15. I just love getting rid of stuff.

Newbie to the site, so please excuse me and refer me to the correct forum if here is not appropriate. . . .

I saw that brugs can be grown in MN. I am in WI and have also seen some on porches around the city. Can you refer to a place in MN/WI that could provide cuttings? I had also previously grown a small groups of Phals. before moving to China for a while. I had to give all of my plants away.

shebo - I've never seen a place in MN selling plants or cuttings, but I know McClure & Zimmerman in Randolph WI had some listed in their catalog. You might also want to check CL from time to time. I think I saw someone in the Mpls area selling cuttings at one point in time.

There are several places you might want to check out online... They send wonderful plants and can hold them till it would be safe to send to your area (due to weather)

Welcome, Sheboyganite. You might want to start a new thread to ensure people from your area see it, instead of attaching to this one. I know there are several people from WI in the forum who can probably refer you to places.

Otherwise, check ebay, there are a number of good sellers on there. Or find the websites for Country Gardens, or Kartuz Greenhouses. Both are online sellers that have high recommendations from this forum.

Make sure you put a photo of your plants in bloom on CL and tell people they are fragrant, bloom at night, and a little about thier care. It will probaby generate more interest (and $) if they know a little about them.

It might also be good, if possible, to show a bloom with a smaller well known object (a hand, a pop can, a quarter etc.) in the background to show how large the blooms are.
Alot of people aren't familiar with brugmansia and think the huge trumpet blooms are ultra cool the first time they see them. Since it is spring and they are unusual for your area you can prob get a little more than what they would sell them for in warmer areas. Best of Luck.
