How to improve peat pot performance?

So it turns out that some of my peat pots did GREAT and some did LOUSY.

Winners

Zinnias, sunflowers, A. incarnata, parsley, dill

So-so

Coneflower, cosmos(?!)

Losers

A. curassavica, Black-eyed Susan(?!), Lupines.

Now a couple of these have explanations. The lupines stayed too long in the fridge, and started to sprout before planting. Oops. (BUT, I also sowed seed outside and got about 12 plants, so all is not lost)

The Black-eyed Susans should have been easy. But as soon as I put the pots in the ground, the seedlings all faded and died. Go figure. A friend of mine informs me that they don't like too much water, which probably applies to the coneflower as well.

The curassavica has had to endure mid-40s in the evenings ... would that be a killer? Only 5 seeds sprouted, and one of those is dead.

The cosmos should be easy (and I've had several successes before with them).

So: any tips on improving the peat pot yield? Note to DEA and ATF: this is not about "improving pot yield." :)

Jeff
