Sap of Milkweed

This is my first time posting on this forum so please forgive me if this has been pointed out already, but I just came inside from weeding milkweed and my bottom lip is swelling from the inside of my mouth. I think I touched some of the sap to inside my lip. I did a search about it and found that the sap is poisonous, especially bad for the eyes. Well, then I kept reading and found an entry on wikipedia that says this:

"There are also many wild edible plant stems. In North America, these include the shoots of common milkweed,..."

Now I'm confused. The sap is obviously toxic, but you can EAT the SHOOTS?
