Repotted Jade (Al's Gritty Mix) ((Picture Heavy))

Good evening GW,

I have found all the ingredients needed to make Al's Gritty Mix and am in the process of repotting my plants to get ready for spring :). My first plant (my favorite) is my large Jade. The mix I had it currently in for the past year was not so great and after learning about Al's Gritty mix I was excited to try it for this spring.

As you can tell from the pictures I thoroughly removed all the peat and whatever else was stuck in between the roots. I washed it under water for a good 20-30 minutes to remove everything. It amazes me how much was stuck in there. I am very excited to see how the new gritty mix works out!

I had a few questions that I would like to get answered.

First question:

I planted my Jade a little bit deeper than it previously was in its old pot. As you can tell from the pictures below that the bottom small branch is now just under the soil. I was hoping that this would work and that it was ok to plant a bit deeper than it previously was. Please confirm that this is ok.

Second question:

How do I go about watering my Jade now? Before my mix held water more than it should have and now I am wondering how often I am going to have to water. For now I have my plant indoors but as soon as weather permits I will be placing it outside.

Last question:

I noticed when cleaning off all the debris from the roots that some roots came off and some seemed to turn white from the brown being scratched off if that makes sense? How long should I wait before I give this plant a good drenching? It's been a year since I replanted so I forget how long I should let the plant establish itself from the shock of replanting.

Here is the recipe (excerpt from the thread below): *For long term (especially woody) plantings and houseplants, I use a superb soil that is extremely durable and structurally sound. The basic mix is equal parts of pine bark, Turface, and crushed granite. The gritty mix: 1 part uncomposted screened pine or fir bark (1/8-1/4") 1 part screened Turface 1 part crushed Gran-I-Grit (grower size) or #2 cherrystone 1 Tbsp gypsum per gallon of soil CRF (if desired) Source of micro-nutrients or use a fertilizer that contains all essentials I use 1/8 -1/4 tsp Epsom salts (MgSO4) per gallon of fertilizer solution when I fertilize if the fertilizer does not contain Mg (check your fertilizer - if it is soluble, it is probable it does not contain Ca or Mg. Jades do not like overheated cooked roots would be more accurate, Drew. Yes, that is probably the problem i had. For sure. Thanks for pointing it out. Yeah in California they are in full sun. My first jade was about to be killed as a weed from San Diego. My aunt lives there. I took it off her hands. Anyway again because of the pot heating up I have had best results in partial shade, your miliage may vary. Mine tends to grow weak in the winter as I'm unable to give it enough light. I prune it down in the spring. It's about 38 years old. I'm really bored with jades and I would just toss it, but my wife is attached to it. So how many jades have you grown? Any pictures? Here is one I grew from a broken branch off the orginal. About 4 years old. Grew well in partial shade too! You can see though how close the sun is. Well, yesterday I used the gritty mix for the first time. I put a persian lilac seedling in the gritty mix (3-4-2) and a spider plant in 1-1-1. I am a bit scared as to how often to water since within a couple of hours the wick on the bottom was dry. I watered again and this morning dry again, so I watered again. Is this normal? The summer heat is not here yet and I am a bit worried about watering. Also the spider plant does not look too good, it is wilted quite a bit. I plan on putting some vincas in the 5-1-1 and see how that goes. I totally understand the benefits of the gritty mix but...are the plants going to make it if I water once a day? Also when is good time to start fertilizing the new potted plants and how much. I also plan on moving my african violet and the peace lily in the gritty (1-1-1) but they will be inside. Please someone help and build my confidence up...:( Michael

Josh, I am certainly not watering in sips, they get drenched when I water. And I realize I should be fertilizing more, that was an oversight on my part. The schedule I listed earlier is what I used for plants in the old mix, I generally do not fertilize in the fall/winter since I don't want to encourage lanky indoor winter growth. Since they haven't been in this mix during a spring or summer yet, I hadn't yet thought of fertilizing (a new baby in the house helps you forget a lot of things!) So I will start giving them some weak fertilizer. Purple, Yep, I'm going to have to water more often, or switch mixes. The occasional soaking in water was kind of an act of desperation.....

Excellent work!

The sections of trunk that are buried will sprout new roots from the nodes.
In the future, if you want to raise the trunk, you can always prune those roots away.

Wait a week or two to water, since you just gave the roots a thorough rinsing (nice roots, too).
As you know, don't water until the damaged roots have a chance to form a callus. This time of year,
I'd give it a week to be safe. Some leaves might show stress until new roots bite into the mix
and bring the plant's water-movement mechanism back "online."

During the Summer, you might expect to water every 1 - 2 weeks.
During the Winter, you might water every 10 days to 3 weeks depending on the month.
In this mix, however, you can certainly water on a schedule if you wish.

If it were me, I'd raise the plant and soil level. I like to see the entire plant, and it looks like it's set deeply in the pot and blocking the base. Looking at the pictures of the plant on the cutting board, you might want to cut the lower 2-3 branches on the right trunk off and root them. Just a thought. otherwise a really nice looking plant.
