Aphids - Aphids - Aphids HELP

I need some advice on how to get rid of aphids on my brugs. Can I use granular systemic in the pots? These aphids are so thick, I keep washing them off, but they just keep reproducing. If any of you can help I would appreciate it. Hummingbird

Go ahead with the systemic, but it will take some time to work. In the meantime, mix in a quart spray bottle 2 oz of Murphy's oil soap, 2 oz rubbing alcohol and the rest water. Add the soap last or you will get nothing but bubbles. Do not spray in direct sunlight, if they are outdoors, spray in the evening or early morning. You will need to spray every few days until you see signs that the systemic is working. The oil will smother them and the alcohol will dry them up, so either way, they will be gonners (at least for a while) HTH Georgia

Georgia is right! I used the same ratio oil soap (or even dish liquid will do in a pinch) to alcohol and water. And if you can, keep hitting with a hose (obviously not immediately after you spray them or it defeats the purpose!). Now that mine are pretty much under control, I still spray about once a week on the undersides of the leaves just to be preventative! PS I didn't have to use a systemic either but if things get bad this summer....

Ok I see ants swarming in my Okra beds for ever. I don't see any particular damage to the plants. Web search shows me the following as pretty much the universal explanation: Aphids produce secretions/honeydew which ants love. My objection to that theory: There are very few aphids on the Okra, hardly to talk about. However, all my cucurbits are loaded with millions aphids of all ages. Yet, I don't see any ants going to the cucurbits. The other explanation I have seen is: they suck the juice at the base of the blooms. But I don't really see many ants on the blooms although I see a few aphids on the blooms. Any other explanation? How to get rid of them? Spraying them kills only the ants that are physically present there and get direct contact. For every ant killed this way, there are thousands more. Tracking the ant trails I don't see any accesible ant mounds. So, how do i get rid of them for good? Thanks.

I noticed for the first time in 15 years that my clematis plant had little black bugs all over the trellis and old vines, and osme one leaves. They are the size of a tick. I think I finally found out that they are aphids. The odd thing is that after an unusal amount of rain this year, the big fir tree branch hanging over the Clematis, dropped a ton of sap all over my leaves. I have tried soapy water, but that doesn't last too long. Has anyone heard of aphids, in every size, coming from the sap of fir tree? what is the best homemade remedy I can use for both the sap and the aphids. Thanks, Jan

I saw a documentary on ants by some famous ant scientist. Ants also secrete a pheremone where they walk and that is how the soldier ants know where to go- to bring food to the queen etc. If you watch ants they form trails- patterns that they all follow. If you put down something to distract them such as lavender oil, black pepper- something with a strong lasting smell they will get to that place and loose the pheremone scent and turn around. You will then see some very confused ants. I don't know about the whole aphid thing but I do know this is fact. So- if you really feel the need to get rid of the ants- experiment with this and see what happens. I tried this when I had an infestation of these tiny ants which happened to be in an external modem for the phone.It was so gross but I still had a hard time killing these little creatures carrying eggs trying to protect them when they were disturbed. So out came the lavender oil and away they went.Anyway I have millions of tiny ants in the garden this year and I wondered if they were somewhere in the chain of disaster I'm experiencing. the moving is smart... make those buggies work! :o) a blast of hard water from a hose will work, I just used this great recipe to wipe out a spider mite infestation 1 gal water 1TBS mouthwash 1TBS cooking oil 1TBS dish soap and maybe 1/3 cup hydrogen peroxide. Worked like a charm! :o) but you have to keep coming back to get the babies. Good luck!

"Georgia-on-my-mind and Wanna-run-faster", Thanks, I made up the mixture and sprayed my Brugs. I appreciate your quick response. Thanks again, and I will let you know how they are going. I love the look of this plant and hope my grow as beautiful as the ones I see on this forum. The weather in my zone gets very hot 100+ and really cold -10 to -20. I am going to grow mine in the greenhouse in the winter and outside in the summer. I am on this site alot searching for information and I glean tons every time I log on. Thanks again, Hummingbird
