Huernia/Stapelia Question....True Identity

Well I have 2 Huernias in bloom right now. I finally have found one I was looking for, but have seen it under many names. I bought it as Huernia Keniensis 'Lake Barad', and as Huernia/stapelia 'Pendula'. The flower is what I wanted on both! It is maroon and totally covered in 'teeth' or whatever the name is for the pointy bumps in the blooms. The petals on them,fold back, and make it look like a maroon furry nickel. I love it, and of course the wonderful rotten smell. They are identical in blooms and growth shape.

But what is its name. Which could be more likely its name? I cant post pics. they never show up. They stems are the pointed smooth stems of most 'Keniensis type' huernias,the flowers are nickel sized, maroon,and point downwards, and look like furry nickels once the petals fold back. Usually the second day they are open.

So..is 'Pendula' or this 'Lake Barad' one the real name for a Huernia with that kind of bloom. It is like a 'Hystrix' bloom, that many pointy teeth on the bloom,but solid maroon.

Sorry Aveo,

Most of us have had to learn to post pix at one time or another. The instructions are around (maybe see the Test Forum), or (I can't do it myself) or maybe someone can do it for you. One needs a photo-hosting account to start (Photobucket which I use & I believe Flicker are both free).

Also, don't know if his website is current, but Dr. Barad used to have a large photo collection of lots of his plants, from which you maybe can match an ID?

Sounds pretty cool from the description.

Hi Nick...saw your posting and just wanted to tell you that the tree-like cactus you sent me several months ago is going crazy! It has grown 12 branches in the last month! I can almost watch it grow! After you sent it to me, I printed the name of the plant on a piece of paper aand scotch-taped a label on the pot, not giving any thought to the intensity of the sun and it bleached out all the letters in the name. Kind of hoping you will remember what the name is. It looks like a type of opuntia that grows in form like a tree if that helps to trigger your memory. I only have a small echinopsis easter lilly cactus, a clumping plant for which I have one cutting that is only an inch and a quarter across. Jeff

Zech, That's a great picture source, but unfortunately you've fallen for the Great Stapelia Snipe Hunt act again. First of all, there are any number of pictures there which perfectly illustrate the hazards of lumping. While the photography is sublime, I believe that there's some question about the nomenclatural system used there - too many Stapelias, not enough Tromotriche. Tromotriche engleriana http://www.huntington.org/BotanicalDiv/ISI2002/isi/2002-38.html Secondly, in many plants, the flower is a defining factor in determining what it is. Yes, you're right, size alone isn't enough, but my point is that many people classify the large, fuzzy flowers as Stapelias - I'm one of those people. That doesn't make me right, but looking at your link's pictures - you don't think some of those should be in a different genus, based on flower difference? Hi Rosie & any other Asclepiad/Stapeliad lovers, If you really want to see about these amazing plants, pls look up Dr. Jerry Barad, who used to specialize in Asclepiads in general, more particularly Stapelias, Huernias, Ceropegias, Orbeas & Carallumas. Check out his website "Stapeliads: Orchids of the Succulent World" which has so much of the work Jerry did on these himself, breeding, growing, blooming, etc. & his own spectacular photography, which should help you learn IDs. He may also have included explanation of the distinction you're asking about, I don't recall. Hey Stush, Happy New Year. Last I knew, the late Dr. Barad was to be considered to be THE Stapeliad authority in the Eastern half of the USA. I had the mixed pleasure of being in his greenhouses in Summer at high noon (really 1:00 pm) when the Carallumas' stench was at its strongest. Really, seriously stinky!!! FYI: they don't all have flowers that stink, actually only a relatively few from those I've smelled (a lot of different types at Barad's too). But the flowers are really fantastic & sometimes other-worldy (see Ceropegia blooms as example).

Can't agree enough with Pirate Girl... pics are a must, especially with ID questions. I also use PhotoBucket and it is free to register and very easy to upload as long as you know how to re-size your pics to 1024 x 768. I use Photo Shop but there are other software options out there for this purpose. Once you have uploaded your pics, you will see four (4) choices listed under each pic. Select the 3rd (HTML Code) and paste it here, as in this message box.

Aveo, If yours are still flowering, try cross pollination. I would love to see what you come up with the seeds. If yours are hybrid, they may give you many different kinds in the seedlings. Good luck and have fun.

Good link except what's missing is that you first have to re-size your picture to 1024 x 768 before you can upload it to Photobucket

I don't re-size any pix before uploading to PB, I still don't know how & haven't needed to.

Karen, I didn't think Photobucket accepted anything larger than 1024x768 and I can't believe your original digital images are that size. Help me out here.... Doc is lost!!!!!

I load my pictures into 'Paint' which was free with 'Windows' and resize it there as well as label them. Then put them in my resized folder. When downloading to photo bucket, I use these photos. Hope it helps. I like the idea of labeling photos for later reference.

Aveo, when you first posted this, I started researching it, then got sidetracked...and confused myself with info, so figured I'd wait for your pix. Since you haven't yet posted any, I'll just throw out a few thoughts.

When you bought the one you got as Huernia Keniensis Lake Barad, was it from eBay? I found a listing somewhat similar. What I did note, was that it showed Barad as the person who discovered this species (if I'm correct) & it was found at Lake Naivasha, Kenya (absolutelycactus was the seller and they are notorious for misinformation & using others' photos without permission). BTW, the species name (2nd word) is never capitalized, so it should be Huernia keniensis. This species is variable. You can see some fine examples at the link below. I'm not sure if you still have to join/become a member in order to access the database. The site is an invaluable tool with beautiful photos!

Huernia pendula does hang down, but its bumps are not pointed-I don't think. See one photo here:

I have no idea the size of any of these blooms, sorry.

As for down/uploading pix to Photobucket, I always resize mine before I upload because I don't want to post huge pix online. I've had my pix used without permission on others' websites. They don't usually want to steal small pix.

Without getting into it too much, there are some differences between free Photobucket accts & pro (paid) accts. The free accts have only (what they call) "web-sized" images & the pro accts have both the "web-sized" & your original size photos stored. They automatically reduce/resize large pix on the free accts.

In the pro accts, you can choose a setting for web-sized copies of your photos to link and share. (up to 4000x3000, but they recommend 1024x768, faster load times)
On the free accts the largest web-size is 2048x1536.
You need to set your upload options. If you're using your pix for your own website, of course you'd want the larger pix/higher resolution!

I hadn't known that myself & I only have the free account, so never ran into that (tho' my sister got on me from when she gave me a digital camera in '09, that I should learn pic sizing, which I never did). Couldn't contain my excitement at posting pix of plants & quilts long enough to do so, so I never have. One of these days (years).
