Target Smith & Hawken bulbs in pot, sale $4.99

It was an after Christmas sale so were 1/2 off. They are in nice ceramic pots. Here in CA, just the pot alone would cost that much. I got one Minerva and one Red Lion. The kit contains one bulb (24/26cm) and coco fiber disk. As you can see by the picture, I had to rescue them. The store had dozens of them. But I was with DH and had to restrain myself.

That looks too pink to be either of the hybrids mentioned. Keep us posted!!

I just went to a home depot in orange county, ca and bought 10 apple blossoms for only $2.99 ea. You have to open each box to look at their conditions, but mind are just going to begin sprouting.

Hey, Chaz! Good to "see" you! How goes the studying? Good for you, Kristi! I don't have Benfica or Roma, either... and they are very pretty... I'm glad you treated yourself! You're right... those are excellent prices, especially considering the source! I hope they arrive nice and healthy! I'm in the market for Sprekelia, Scadoxus, and some Habranthus... but other than that, I've got to curb the influx of large bulbs... unless I can figure out how to hang them from the ceiling! I've got 2 absolutely huge clay patio pots sitting in the garage... I'll be planting them with the Minervas and Red Lions I already have... and we'll see how they do out in the garden as centerpieces... I'll choose some pretty annuals to surround them with. That should free up some space... until fall rolls around! Be sure to post photos when you get your bulbs! :-)

Mrbrownthumb... I'm familiar with Midway Airport... for a short time, I lived in the vicinity of 87th and Harlem Ave... and my Grandmother lived right around 47th and Kolin Ave... I grew up way out in the country, past the suburbs... we plan on moving back up north within the next year or so, but right now, we're down in the Champaign area... it's nice here, but very flat and rather windy! The only good thing is gaining a gardening zone! I'd be interested in joining an organization dedicated to Hippeastrums, but it's not looking like there will be anything too local... if my health weren't an issue, I'd be interested in starting a new club... but I know I couldn't do all that would be necessary to maintain a bulb organization... but if anything should pop up, I'm interested in a membership, that's for sure! I'm just a newbie, too! A scant few months ago, I had two bulbs... a Minerva and an Apple Blossom... I now have over 30 bulbs, and I have a growing wish list! My first seed pods are ripening, and I plan on putting together a breeding program so I can, someday, have my own crossed varieties... I know it will take quite some time to see the results, but I think it's worth the wait!

Just for the heck of it, check this one out, Hopflower... it's a "buy it now" or "best offer" on eBay... there are 2 of the pots available, and in reading the fine print, I find that the seller will include an Amaryllis bulb with the pot purchase... not a bad deal... although, shipping is a bit high... to my zip code, anyway... Bless me, Father, for I have sinned... it has been... 35 years since my last confession... I bought cheap bulbs with the intention of planting them, and now, I feel so cheap and tawdry! Please help me! "It's ok, my child... every Hippeastrum enthusiast is tempted by the cheap retail outlets... it's normal to have these feelings... say 20 Hail Mary's, plant the bulbs... and go in peace."

I like the pots! Those poor plants! The pink bloom should be interesting.

I wish the containers for gift giving were more reliable with their lableling. My "Apple Blossom" is very clearly a mislabel... though the flowers haven't opened yet, I can already see that the blooms will have a lot of red (probably "Minerva"). With any luck, maybe my "Minerva" will be an "Apple Blossom" and everything will work out in the end! *smile*

Maybe it looks pink because when I took the picture the flash came on. I will post later whether it is red or pink.

You're right, it could have been the flash, reds are hard to capture.

I just received one of these for Christmas after I kept an eye out for white Amaryllis (or any other color besides the endless reds I have). I received a Minerva though. I have to admit, I was nervous about using the pot since it had no holes on the bottom and I was disappointed after the little disk only filled the pot halfway with growing medium. I decided to stick the bulb in there as a temporary measure until spring comes and then I can get it in the ground. My search for non-red Amaryllis continues!

Since they started blooming it looks like the Minerva one is Apple Blossom (I think) and the Red Lion is Minerva (maybe). I will post pictures on another thread. It is always a surprise when you buy box bulbs.
