OT Geminid Meteor Shower TONIGHT!!!!

Eyes to the skies for an event that will be so beautiful!!!

If you are in an area with a clear forecast for this evening, bundle up and go out to watch the show! Here is a blurb from the web:

Late tonight the Geminid meteor shower will peak, leaving many Americans with their heads turned toward the sky to watch. Geminid meteors travel slower than other types, leaving a longer and more brilliant streak across the sky. Astronomers are expecting roughly 140 meteors per hour in some places. As with any shower it is better to view as far from city lights as possible, a telescope is not needed. NASA predicts the best viewing time will be around 12:99 a.m. EST (9:00 p.m. PST).

It's going to cloud up here on the Delaware shore, but I'm still going out at dark and watch until I get too sleepy...

(stayed up to watch the Giants/Eagles game- my poor boys fought to the end, but we lost...)

Look to the northeast near the big dipper, that's where the meteor showers radiant is.

Lol, I'd better to fix that right now. Thanks for letting me know. Diane, 70 is the new 50! Still can date if you want to. Make a wish when you see the shooting stars, a wonderful guy might show up by daybreak. :-) I can't fix it under the title, there is no edit. So sorry.

Outsideplaying, the Perseids are the best thing! I used to live on Harbor Island, one of the barrier islands on the coast of S. Carolina. I walked out on the boardwalk past the lighted area, and laid down flat on my back to watch the Perseid showers. Stunning, goosebumpy in a truly dark sky. I tried laying down on the beach one night, but kept being nibbled on by ghost crabs, the beach cleanup crew! We watch the ISS, too. I watch the NASA channel pretty often and am so fascinated by their live transmissions from space.

I too just want to wish everybody a wonderful Christmas, or whatever you celebrate (if you celebrate) and a happy and healthy New Year! I know what you mean about things getting overdone, and I think the whole present/shopping thing has just become ridiculous. I guess if you have a big extended family with lots of expectations (and particularly if there are little kids involved) its difficult to keep things simple, but I hope everybody manages to make their holiday into something that they can enjoy. DH's company is closed the whole week (one of the advantages of working for a non-profit!) so we try to use this season to just spend lots of time together. We do have a Christmas tree, its beautiful and gives us joy. Rather than do real presents, we just give the $ to organizations we care about, like our local food bank/homeless shelter and the Doctors without borders. What we DO get for each other is just silly stuff that we'd buy for ourselves anyway, but its much more fun to get it for each other and have a few (very few) pretty packages under the tree to unwrap. And I mean literally silly stuff that we need, like scotch tape refill, or pens, or computer-screen wipes, or he usually gets me a spool of that twisty stuff to use in the garden (though for roses these days I'm more and more using panty hose - love the fact that it never cuts into the wood! A bit of a problem for me, since I almost never wear dresses, but you can buy big wads of cheap panty hose at the dollar store. But the twisty is great for tomatoes and annual vines and etc.) Alana, I think gift cards are a great idea if there really is a serious expectation of presents - that way at least people can get something that they actually want. Anyway, I hope nobody ends up making themselves too stressed out and crazy over the "perfect" gift and instead that everybody can enjoy some peace, contemplation, and the company of people that they love this season.

*sigh* Every time this happens, there's rain in the forecast for us. I've never had the chance to actually see this. We've got a 65% chance of rain starting at midnight with rain through 10am tomorrow. Maybe next time.

I have had this marked on my calendar for weeks. Looks like we will miss the show, 60% chance of rain tonight. Bummer!

I checked the forecast for the southeast Ches Bay - WU says "partly cloudy" now, but it's very clear. After rains stopped yesterday, it was very clear last night - many stars. Keep your fingers crossed - the cloudy weather may hold of a little longer.

Our forecast is also for party cloudy skies, but we will most likely try to see the show just the same. I love meteor showers, my best viewing spot used to be from a blanket on the beach at the New Jersey shore; sure do miss the shore!

Cloudy here, chance of drizzle.

Yeah, as if I'd stay up until 1 a.m. anyway. That was for my younger days.

It looks like the actual peak time was Sunday night before midnight and early this AM.

cloudy here in hoosier country all last night (and I should know, I'm still up from last night) maybe I'll get lucky and catch a glimpse in the next few days. Astronomical events are suppose to be one of the perks of being a night owl.

Yeah, I took one look outside last night and knew it was a no-go - heavily clouded in here in northern AL. Looks like tonight may be much the same.

Fog has socked us in. Today, it got heavier during the afternoon. Airports closed.
