Comments (2)Hello J'Lynn I do not believe the plants need to be root bound to flower. It could also be related to temperature, can you think back to the conditions of your home when your Mom's plant bloomed; were you living in the same climate zone then? We have conditions similar to California and our plants are grown outside under about 60% shade, the minimum temperature would be about 50F, summer temps regularly reach 90-95F. Our plants bloom well, grown in ordinary potting soil and usually dry between waterings....See MoreNew to orchid cacti
Comments (3)Yes, they do require good drainage - lava rock, some basic potting mix and some perlite should all work well in conjunction with one another. You might also consider using Coco peat, or sphagnum moss. You want the mix to retain moisture and remain humid, but not soggy. And unlike desert, terrestrial cacti, most epiphytic cacti do not want the mix to go bone dry between waterings either. Are they just a few cuttings, or do you have many individual cuttings? I would not put the unrooted cuttings (unless you have quite a few of them) in a large pot - the substrate will retain too much moisture and lead to rotting. The unrooted cuttings should receive little to no water until they develop some roots (if there are no roots, the tissues will rot in the moist soil). I hope this helps. They are a lot of fun. I cannot recommend enough the website 'Epiforums', it is an online forum dedicated primarily to this type of cacti (as well as other epiphytes - hoyas, orchids, etc.) Here is a link that might be useful: EpiForums...See Morerjm710
