Can you tell me how you are growing them? Are they in pots or in the ground,what kind of fertilizer,etc?
There are gentler methods of propagating than the slicing method. Lora

I had real good luck doing twin scales of a lemon-lime that froze and rotted half. I just cleaned up the other half and sliced it. Six months later I have several bulbs the size of grapes from a bulb many people might have thrown away.

In pots and in the ground Lora, they don´t seem to bother and aren´t picky, as long as the soil drains relatively fast they are fine, I plant the bulb 2/3 in the soil, 1/3 above soil level. I fertilize them every week with diluted fertilizer ( Miracle Gro ) just as I do with my other plants.

Pat that´s good news, though never had a frozen bulb ever ( too warm to have freezing temps ) and in the rare ocurrence of it happening usually affects plants above 3 ft tall.

That is a tough question !
I think, if I've had opportunity to enjoy them for several years, and, am feeling somewhat restless to move along with my program,, rather than remain placated with what I have, I would have to slice "one" at first.
Actually, I would think you could probably cut a slice of one (or more) just off the side (only need two layers of thickness) including basel, etc. And that way still have the bulb, plus the slice off of one side of it, etc, etc.
The bulb would appear to have a wound on one side, just doctor it accordingly and see how the slice comes along.
One time I cut all the outside meat off of one leaving only the core (like an eaten apple) and it kept right on growing and even bloomed that year.

My gentler approach would be to mearly take a small nick out of the edge of the basal plate. Dust the nick with a fungicide and replant. Usually,an offset will form on either side of the nick. I'm just a bit cautious,these are not easy to obtain plants for you and major slicing can end up in a pile of rotten mush. Lora

Slicing would give you bulb lets which will take three ysars to flower and so would your seeds.

Try selfing.
To me cross polination is far more rewarding then just increasing the stock of your existing bulbs.
In my expearience the stressed bulbs (life threat) produce more offsets than the pempered ones.

Thanks for the tips ! I was hopping Danny would jump in and give me some good advice. Funny that you mentioned that method Danny, in the Dahlia forum a lady was asking about how to overwinter her tubers, if divide them and wrap them all in saran or keep the whole clump, I recomended dividing the clump in half, overwinter it in peat moss and dividing the other half and wrap it in saran. You know, if the ones wrapped in saran rot at least she still has the other half "just in case".

Amaryllises, dahlias and callas are my favorites, there´s nothing like having a good collection of them. And BTW Lora, some of my dahlias are also "imported". LOL.

Hi! A thought just crossed my mind while reading this post. I am not a bulb expert...just want to chip in some ideas. I am not as adventurous as other gardeners with regards to slicing my Amaryllis. Maybe I just love them too much, I'm scared I'd kill them. Won't cutting off the bloom stalk and not making your Amaryllis bloom possibly give you offsets? Plants produce flowers for reproductive purposes. From my experience a lot of plants would find other ways of reproducing like giving out offsets when they are not able to flower.
I used to import live plants from US and other countries too. It is very costly and I could only afford to get one variety of each plant I order. Finding ways to propagate them without killing them was fun and interesting.

Now back to the topic... I did some slicing today and boy did it hurt. First mature bulb I repotted for Spring is Dancing Queen with 5 babies attached to it. The biggest one was as big as a golf ball. First I took the whole thing, bulb and soil, out of the pot. No sign of white live roots...TROUBLE. Sure enough after removing all the old soil there was rot and red marks on outer layer of mother bulb and the babies most of all. Poor little things. I cleaned the mommy and it was fine after taking out several layers of scales. The babies are just too sick and suffered the most on this ATTACK. It took me a long while in deciding wether too seperate them or not. Most of them don't have their own roots yet. Should I seperate them and avoid risking the mother to get sick again? Or should I let them be and let the mother nourish them back to health? It was a very hard decision. But as I look at the situation of the bulb, it's where the babies and mother bulb connect that the rot started maybe because they were so close together and that it didn't have enough air circulation to dry it up. So for the best of all, I had to slice the babies from the mother except for one that was growing far from the mother. Now I have four Little Dancing Queens.
