Seeds Are On The Way! (Plus Updates) :)

Hi everyone,

Boy, what a year it has been for me, but now that special time we all look forward to is just around the corner. I did not have any seeds to trade this year, so mom ordered some flower seeds for me from Swallowtail. Here's what I chose:

"Blue Globe" Globe Thistle
"Luna Red" Hibiscus (unsure when to WS these)
"Soulmate" and "Milkmaid" Milkweeds
"Pretty Betsy" Jupiter's Beard
"Tokajer" Gaillardia
"Sightseeing Mix" Veronica

Life has been very busy this year besides the garden. Fell over the side of the neighbor's deck while arranging their flower pots so they could get some rain. I only sustained a brush burn on the right side of my ribs, and a sore left arm, but I am okay. Had to have a tick removed for the first time ever and I NEVER want to go through that again. Oddly enough, my best friend just recently got diagnosed with Lyme Disease, and I hope he'll be okay considering he is like family to me. I was luckier with my tick bite experience. I forget when he got bit, though. Anyways, enough of my rambling. I hope you're all doing well and Happy Sowing!!!! :-)

Well at least you are okay and its nothing serious!! Those are some good seeds too! I love hibiscus and milkweed and I just recently saw different varieties of Gaillardia so now I'm on the hunt ;) and hey, if you are interested in a few things on my seed list let me know and I can probably send you some more seeds for wintersowing!!
This is gonna be my first year and I'm nervous about making it work and when to start...When do you normally start? (lol considering we are in the same state)

Hi Michael,

I usually start on the Solstice (which is tomorrow!), but I do not have any containers on hand at the moment, so I will . I just got another offer for seeds today. I remember how nervous I was the first time I WS'ed. Now, I encourage all who garden to try WS. Good luck!

I shall look over your list and see if there's anything that strikes my fancy.

Gaillardia/Blanket Flowers are wonderful to have in the garden. Then again, I love anything that attracts the butterflies lol.

I recieved this reply from rareseeds.com and they gave me the following messages: 1/1/08 "Michael, We only sell ground cherry seeds for $1.50 a packet or 1/4 oz for $7.50. Thanks for letting us know I will go to the site and see for myself. Pam" Then on 1/2/08 "Mike, I looked up the link and Jere also checked this out. After reading the responses to this guy from other forum members, Jere decided that he wouldn't worry to much about it. Also, the date is pretty old, almost a year. How come it appears you did part of your neighbors area? That deep furrow is the property line between our two houses and my lawn used to be a mix of 20% tall fescue / 80% weeds however for some reason, that entire side of his property was bermuda grass that was invading about half of my lawn. Which, coupled with the fact that I only had about a 10'x10' patch of fescue left, made me decide to renovate. I had planned on asking him but considering he moved out around Thanksgiving and is letting his house rot until the bank finally forecloses I figured he waived any rights he had towards objecting what I do what that small swatch of his grass. There are a great number of expletives I could use regarding his decision to buy a bigger house in a nicer neighborhood while allowing this one to just sit vacant. The neighbor on the farside couldn't care less which leaves me to mow the yard, patrol the parameter - to ensure it doesn't become the local hangout for deviants (as it's what I used to do when *I* was a kid, lol - and all the other chores that need to be done simply to ensure the health & safety of my 10mos old child. Down here, I've found that tall grass leads to all manner of nasty insects, snakes, etc. to set up shop, not to mention the overgrown and soon to be dilapidated look doesn't do much for my property values. :sigh: And the S.O.B. is a real estate agent, you'd think he'd at least rent the place out rather than allowing his credit to tank because of the impending foreclosure. But, to answer your question specifically, there would have been little point in renovating my lawn and leaving his bermuda grass at that property line as it would have simply continued to spread back into my yard over and over again. As it is, the double application of Round-Up followed by the Tupersan I put down at seeding doesn't seem to have gotten _every_ bit of the bermuda grass and by the time I can start mowing my new lawn I'll be out there trying to proactively kill off the last bit of stragglers poking through.

hello well I hope the rest make it home by the end of the week. you know drippy I guess it is just a gift I have, I print/write a list of what people are looking for and just try to pop as many of their fav/wanted seeds in the envie, or things like it. but after the first 10 or 12 envies come in I get a little lost in the lists and just start looking and saying I think they will go ....here, maybe not a gift so much as dumb luck. LOL we are doing better my mother in law said she wanted us to have her new standard poodle puppy, she is a dream and the boys love going over to the house and playing with her. her name is pearl but I think I'm gonna rename her Ruby(Miss Ruby Star) or shasta (Miss Shasta Daisy). my oldest, Timmy is very excited to have her. she is 4 months old and very active, my mother in law just can't keep up with her, she and the boys will do a great job of running each other out. I received my bubble envelope filled with many of my seed wishes yesterday too! Lots of great bonuses also!! Thanks to everyone for contributing their seeds and making my gardening wishes come true! However, the BIGGEST THANKS goes to Patty, our Round Robin Coordinator, who worked long hours sorting through hundreds of seed packets, matching up wishes with actual packets of seeds, distributing, adding "extras", and then mailing off lot of envelopes to participants!!! A BIG round of applause for Patty!!! This wouldn't have been possible without YOU!!!

One note to add is that the fall I experienced happened back at the end of August. The tick experience was just last month.

I also wanted to start today but its pretty warm here :/ high of 65 tomorrow so I think I'm gonna wait till Tuesday when the temps are suppose to go down and stay around 20-30 something. Omg, I have been saving tons of different containers from coworkers and family to use!! I have lots of new seeds to try( and more coming) thanks to a few swaps and a few round robins I'm participating in!! Also a noob to round robins so I'm trying with what seeds I do have this year! It's been a bad year so I'm hoping for good experiences this year!(and lots of flowers!)

hey quick question!! I went back, way back in threads from years past and some people were using coffee filters in their wintersowing containers to keep soil from seeping out, does it really help that much? do you think it would help with transplanting too cuz I'd like to try a container or too of these pink peony poppies I got!!

I have never used the coffee filters for my WS containers, so I can't answer your question. Sorry about that. The weather here today was warmer, but also rainy.

I just got my seeds from Swallowtail today. I can't wait to plant them!

I'm new to gardenweb and I just found this forum. Please excuse my ignorance, does WS stand for winter sown or winter solstice? I'm also new to winter sewing seeds. Any suggestions?
