Just a few quick shots for now of some nice Vriesas of John's that I managed to get. More pics later. The last photo is a strand of curly-que Spanish moss that I've had an eyr on for some time, really different.

Thanks Everyone. I just got back from Michaels, and they had the black hats. Also some sunglasses, tho might be too big. Last night I painted "Sally Ann" purple. I put her by the Brothers, and boy....she looks quite haughty! She looked so sweet before. I don't think she approves of them at all. Its 110 out, so am not messing with hats and glasses till tonight when its bearable. I have to find a way to attach them, think I might use fishing line since it wouldn't show. I don't want to glue stuff cause our heat may not let the things I bought last more than the summer. SusieRose....ME, SEW? Not to mention mosaic the big shelf for the bakers rack! LOL, you forgot who you're talking to. Queen of Procrastination, who can barely thread a needle. Actually I use needles only for splinter removal. Cait, I don't know yet what I'm doing with the pitcher. I just like the colors. I haven't had any luck growing succulents. I kill them as easily as I kill flowers. hugs, Karen

leftwood, you have some very good questions that I should have answered in the first post. Better late than never...yes, it's only in the garden - one spot each of the 2 days it's appeared. This particular garden was built from scratch last year by my digging out clay and putting a mixture of compost and peat in, topped by cedar mulch. I haven't touched it with my hands but although it looks dry, when I stuck the end of a bic pen into it, it became a very thick liquid consistency. Don't know yet if it stains. It's kind of a random disbursement of this bright yellow stuff and to the eye it looks like what you'd get if you broke up a hard boiled egg's yolk and dropped it from your hand onto a surface. This stuff doesn't blow around. Today's mess is on the daffodil leaves which are now laying sideways on top of the mulch. I watered last night so the ground is still kind of moist. Sat, the day before pile 1 appeared we had a high of 95. Today it was about 90. Other days around these 2 haven't been nearly as hot. I'll try and get a picture of it posted by tomorrow. My gardening neighbor has never seen anything like this either. It's just weird. I've never seen any kind of mold like this, haven't seen any animal droppings or vomit like this, and it's definitely not something out of a human (at least no human that I know!). It's the bright yellow color and the mysterious appearance that has me baffled. If anyone has any ideas, I'm sure open to hearing them. Thanks, MN gardeners!

Thanks Chad Yea,I think there is a basketball under the trunk of the Washy.(-; The Agaves are really amazing,I think the last time I counted the A.Havardiana had put out 12 leaves and that may have been a month ago. The center of it is like a telephone pole its so thick.

wen to transplant them is a good question. Hopefully some more experienced growers will have a better answer. This is my second attempt at starting indoors. Last year Aphids took over when I bought some seedlings at a greenouse and brought them in with my plants. Not much was left two days after buying the plants they looked like they were bubbling and it turned out to be aphids just crawling all over the plants and each other it was enough to make you puke so I freaked and took them out to the garage and smothered them in seven dust. I was so ticked because all my home started plants looked and were doing great to that point. This year has been smooth. Back to the question. The ideal time seems to be once they've established themselves and have a a few or more sets of true leaves and start to take off growth wise. Those are the ones I'll target first to go into larger cups and then leave the other smaller ones in the flats to mature some more. What I'm seeing happen in my flats is the ones that are really taking off are starting to create shade for the ones that are smaller yet. The ones in your pictures look like they are ready to go into larger containers.

All beauties, but my favourite is Sweet Success. I really like the pink colouring from the tips in - unusual.

These unnamed Vrieseas are all from the same seed. What a difference. John explained the proper way for registration of new hybrids and the amount of time involved. 2nd generations, true to form, etc., a LOT of time!

Hi Gonzor, nothing like a vriesea post to bring us out of hibernation on a wet winter's day. We are adjusting to winter after having basked in the warmth of the tropics in Thailand! Am most intrigued by arden's amore- how big does that get? What's the name of the albomarginated one below the v.brassicoides?

Jaga, I will get that information to you as soon as I can. HD, you never know when he might have seedlings(!) for sale. It truly was a treat to see so many Vreiseas and V.landsias in bloom, a regular color riot. John is a most gracious host and really likes these visits (I do too!).

Thats great if you can drive over and get them.....I would have to sell my whole collection to buy gas for that drive over LOL

Good score, gonz! I'd sure like to see a photo of a mature Vr. Sweet Success, to see if it keeps that two-tone appearance. Very unusual!

Why will the xVrieslandsia not develop variegation until later? It looks pretty darn big.

Wonderful selection of plants, Gonzer, looks like a good time was had by all. That Golden Chestnut is a beauty, also those variegated plants. Is the T. imperialis by T. australis 'red clone' as large as I imagine?

Lisa, I think I have a Sweet Success that is sending up a bloom spike, I'll take a pic and post it so you can evaluate the color. It suffered a touch of cold-weather damage, but has recovered nicely.

Moki, we don't know. It was given to John years ago.
Lisa, he's not sure why the varigation comes late but he showed me a few examples of progressive whitening. He gave me a plant-back-exchange guarantee just in case.
And for Kim, yep, it's a biggie alright. Here's one of his 'green form' in full splendor.
