First the snow, now the wind!

It's a mess here. The wind has been howling since yesterday and there's trees coming down all over the place. I guess so many were damaged from the monster snowstorm and this wind is the last straw. I was in bed and heard a crash at about 11 last night. Another of my neighbor's trees came down and it missed my master bedroom by about a foot! Driving is like making your way thru an obstacle course with broken tree limbs in the road but at least we're not getting any snow that's sticking. I heard that it's pretty bad further north.

Goodness gracious me! I was following the reports for your area on the weather channel. We are supposed to get another rain storm by tomorrow, I'm worried about the people who live in the mudslide areas. They can do without, I'm sure!!

Rain or shine, I'm going to Bluehills today, Hope that trip will be positive.

my 2 bigest fear are being homeless and cold! but I think the cold weather scare me more. Sorry to hear about the terrible snow storm in your town Karyn, I hope it will clear up soon.

I hear you Tony. The snowstorm actually started here (KC area) around 6:00 this morning. Some traffic still stalled on some interstates at this time. KCI airport is closed. Lots of businesses shut down. KS and MO have both been declared a state of emergency. I need to harvest some scionwood too, but thought I'd try to wait for the next warm-up. Spring definitely won't be as early as last year. Last year peaches bloomed the first week of March. It looks like cold weather at least till the end of Feb. After that it would probably take at least two weeks of solid warm weather for peaches to push bloom. If we get normal weather, I wouldn't expect bloom here until early April.

Dear Sighing Carl, You actually sound quite normal and gardener-sane considering the present circumstance. Many of us here felt the same way last Oct. 30 when 14" of wet snow brought down everything it could and destroyed years of growth and thousands of dollars. Last year's event for me and your current status, as unpleasant as they were/are, brought me to a new level of gardening thinking. I try to make gardens look like more with less material not just because of $, but the aging bod can't do what it once did. Also, I've had to adjust my expectations of plant/tree/shrub heights. Last year's storm toppled 15' rhodies so that I had to lasso them and use the riding mower to bring them upright again, rebury the root system, only to eventually have to cut their height in half to prevent toppling again. The changing climate and its odd timing of storms forces me to rethink what I plant. Full Southwestern-like xeriscaping isn't quite my thing, but Mediterranean style with shorter growing plants works for me. Once one has lived through a night of 90' tall oak and maple trees cracking and their tonnage crashing to the ground making your house shake, well, shorter ornamental trees are now quite appealing to me. If you want them, Carl, I have a couple of lovely little Jap maples here with your name on them. Oh, and as for the sighing or 'deep breathing', I'm a 7th generation Connecticut Yankee who can make fire with two sticks, have had to pee in the woods and live for weeks without electricity; but these recent storms damn near made me pass out, so you can bet your asters I'm changing with the climate change. I was thinking of you specifically when I linked this because y'all seem so likely to have blowing dust even if the rest of it misses you. It is creepy to see "Blowing Dust" as an official forecast. We get that sort of forecast here in Love County maybe once or twice a year, but most often in early spring more so than in early winter. With so little rainfall this fall and winter so far to hold down the soil, I think we may see "blowing dust" a lot more often this winter. This wind here has been increasing in speed the last couple of hours, but we aren't supposed to have really strong wind arrive here until late afternoon or early evening. I'm watering the yard with sprinklers that keep the water down really low so the water (or, for that matter, the surface soil) doesn't blow away. I'm not sure I remember the last time we had to worry about wind gusting in the 50s or around 60 mph in some areas of the state in December. March? Sure, but it seems crazy for December. I don't mind the wind so much when the humidity is fairly high or the grass is green. It bothers me a little more when all the vegetation is dry and dormant and the humidity is low.

We got some of your snow and chill here..Talked to my cousin last night and he said his son in law told him, when he retires he's going to go south with a snow shovel and when someone ask him what it is, he'll know that's where he'll put roots down. They live in Colorado. Barb

Over here the temperaturs are at the highest ever, and we seem to be experiencing a drought, and ive heard we might have water restrictions soon.

Oh Karyn, I thought the bad weather is over but I guess it's not. Must have been sooo scary last night when the tree fell next to your bedroom.
Right now we are having such strong winds that's scary. I am sure will be all kind of broken brunches and trees. Rain and strong winds it's not a good combination.

Hi karyn....Not only did we get over four feet of snow but we also got the high winds. The snow was the wet and heavy stuff. We had at least three feet of snow drifts this AM which defeated all the shovelling done the day before. This is absolutey crazy. We are completely out of room to put the snow. I just can't imagine the floods we're going to have when this starts to melt. Ohh...what I wouldn't give for a hot tub!!

You guys east are getting hit SOOO hard this year!!...I'm SO sorry :(

We've been "extra" mild this winter...We're getting ready to mow the lawn for the second time in two weeks...Unheard of this time of year.

We could use some rain and more snow in the mountains.

no were near as bad as yours but I for one am sick of
winter.I am ready for bright sunny days and digging in

Yikes Karyn! This is a winter to remember for you guys. The sweet sound of chain saws will be with you for a long time cleaning up all those trees. We anticipate snow today, but it hasn't started yet. Just gray as can be, with clouds over the mountains. The birds are the indicator, they're feeding like crazy at the feeders.

Sorry to hear that Linda. Was the power loss due to the wind storm? We've been lucky so far this winter with the power. Haven't lost it once. I hope I didn't just jinx myself. LOL

Sandy I lost some stuff, mainly from drying out because I couldn't get into the greenhouse. My big fear is that I'm going to lose stuff next week while we're gone. This time we are all going away, not just me so there's nobody here to care for the plants. I'm going to soak everything and cover some plants in plastic with the hope that it will hold in moisture then I'll just cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Linda, glad you got your electricity back! I know one can do without electricity by using flashlights and candles, and there are the cell phones, but no computer!

Karyn, hope all your plants survive. I used to be gone for 3 weeks at a time and would put my indoor plants in the bathtub, but then, I know you don't only have a few!

I hope you guys will have a great time, wherever you go. You deserve it.
As for the plants, I'm sure they will make it. One week is not too long. I've been known to be gone for a longer period than that.

Sandy that might be a good idea for some plants. I hadn't thought of that. I'm going to play chicken and set the heater to just go on for about 3 hrs at night. Keeping the GH cool helps retain moisture. I just hope we don't get any super cold nights here while I'm gone.
