Please tell me where to get Aleo Vera pups

Hi guys and gals,

I love GW..there is a forum for everything LOL. And I am hoping this one can help me.

I do a plant sale for Charity each May. Last year I had a lot of people looking to buy aloe Vera plants..but did not have them.

So I need to know where to get a large lot of 100 or more pups for a reasonable price. A google search shows me a few places to get them...but...I could use some recommendations from experts.

The Plant sale runs every Fri Sat Sun in May . The money raised goes to Children s miracle Network and they in use it to support Children Hospital Boston.

I wish I could help you - I can perhaps direct you to someone who might get you a number of them, but you'd have to send them postage. And they're not the real Aloe vera, but (I think) Aloe vera chinensis.

The real one has yellow flowers and is unspotted throughout its life - the v. chinensis is spotted when young and has orange flowers.

Have you tried a local plant wholesaler. That should be a pretty common item to find in wholesale quantities. You might try looking at the tags on local big-box succulents and see who wholesales in your area, or ask at a garden center.

When the pup is fully formed, detach it from the mother plant, let it callus over for a few days in a cool, dry area, and pot it up. If it has roots, pot as you would a regular aloe, allowing for the fact that it is smaller and should be in a suitably sized pot for its size. If it has no roots, let it callus over, place the cut/broken end ON the soil, and support it with top dressing. DO NOT WATER IT-it has no roots, so watering the soil will likely cause rot. Instead, mist it every few days. Roots should start forming within a month. When growth is evident, it can be watered."

I would take it out of that decorative pot and use a saucer instead. I water my aloe when the soil looks dry. If I were you I'd not water it for at least 2 weeks. It is a succulent, so it will survive. With most of my plants I can tell if they need water by lifting there pots up. If your doesn't have drainage you should repot it.

Well, I was going to tell you that you did fine and the plant looks pretty good. The lowest leaves will always be recycled into new growth as the plant ages, particularly so in times of drought and stress. The root system looks good, not too small at all. Rather typical in fact. However, you made a significant mistake: "I then watered it thoroughly, as the bagged mix was bone-dry." Oops! Never ever do that with any succulent. When you repot, there are very small mechanical injuries made to the roots. This leaves the external surface of the leaves open to fungal infection. So generally it is best to wait a few days after repotting before providing any water, giving time for the small nicks and cuts to callous over. This will significantly reduce the risk of fungal meltdown after repotting. Additionaly, that Black Gold succulent mix is far too water retentive. It should be further amended with pumice/lava rock and/or perlite or turface. Stones on top are just fine. I do that all the time to make plant more attractive, and to counter-balance heavy plants, What to do now that I have told you about watering and repotting? Do Nothing yet. Watch the plant carefully. Research gritty mixes. Don't water again soon. If you are not certain it's time to water again, Don't! These plants can go weeks, even months with the water they have already stored. Brad

Btw, it’s not a cactus. Definitely outside. In spring, after temps are reliably above 40 at night, you can put it outside under a south eve to avoid cold rain. As temps increase, increase water and sun. During summer, as long as it’s hot, it appreciates a lot of water and full sun. Then as the temps get cooler in fall, bring it in and keep it almost completely dry, watering once every 2 or 3 weeks, depending on how cold your house is. If you do this, you can keep it pretty dormant (south winter window on a sunny day is less than 10% brightness compared with outside summer). Then come spring, increase water and put it outside again. Should bloom in a year or two.

Hoovb I am trying to find a contact company here in mass rhodeislad or new hampshire to get them from but not having a lot of luck yet

I went to Western wholesale for you today, they don't have in plug size, which would be vary cheap. 96 plant per flat. call this number 1760 726 1710 they ship all over the world, I don't know the prices for them. Thomas is the vice-President, Hans Bridtch is the owner. See what you can do. I told the secy about you already. Aloe don't do well in your climates, they like full sun, and there are two forms of the plant. Good luck, I wish I had saved my seeds. When do you need these plants/ Norma

On the top of this page, when it first opens up there is a web search, background is yellow, you can go there, many places are listed.Tell them what size pot or size of plant you want and how many and see what they quote you. Norma
