New GH benches and some blooms

We got the rest of the benches set up along the back wall of the GH which gave me a lot more space. The also smell nice because they are made of cedar. The only thing left to do is put up the poles for the hanging plants. Of course DH now wants to take out part of the back wall and add on another 6-8'. I'm all for it but not until the weather warms up. There's no way I'm moving all these plants out while he does it! The orchids and passies are expecially happy in here. It's like my little refuge. I just come in and piddle around lock the doors and ignore everyone. lol.

O Karyn, that looks really good!! Your plants all look so happy, and I know you are too! And an expansion already!! Good for you!! Everything looks so beautiful!
Couldn't have a better escape, just open the door and step out into a beautiful tropical paradise!

Hi Toni. I hope you had a nice holiday. This GH is kept at a minimum of about 55 at night. I do heat it but as long as it's sunny the heater only goes on at night. W/O the heater running it was above 90 in there today. My big GH's at the farm are kept much cooler. I keep them just above freezing at night. Daytime temps usually don't get much above 70. My grow room is probably the warmest and doesn't get much below 65 but is also rarely above 75 during the day. Grand Duke is my favorite jasmine. I think it's one of the prettiest and the most fragrant. The flower is more then a double. It's kind of like a carnation or a rose bloom. That S. gigantea stinks to high heaven. The cooler temps keep the scent down but when it's in bloom during the heat of the summer it makes me gag. It had something like 10 blooms open at the same time last summer. I couldn't even step into the GH. lol My smaller flowered varities don't have much of a scent, thank goodness, especially because I have quite a few of them in the house. I have no idea what the name of that phael is but the color is odd, sort of a mix of orange, tan and mauve. I've had that Cape Honeysuckle for 4 or 5 years. I cut it back in the spring and keep it at about 4' tall but it's very bushy and takes up a lot of space. I wish it bloomed earlier in the year so I could cut it back in the fall but like the Solandra maxima it blooms on new growth. If I cut it back in the fall I wouldn't get any blooms. That goldfish's foliage has burgundy splotches. I have no idea what the variety is called. I picked it up at Pepper's several years ago. I stop by Pepper's on my way home from the beach every summer. They have an amazing selection of plants but things are notoriously mislabeled. For the prices they charge it doesn't matter to me. They probably have twice as much inventory on site then they list online and prices are even cheaper.

Albert, I'm assuming you received my response to your e-mail about the twin wall, right? The square footage is easy - 126 sq ft roughly 9x14 The cost? I honestly can't tell you for sure. I could guess but it would only be an idea. The greenhouse was one of several projects happening in the back yard at the same time and it received attention in bits and pieces as the other projects proceeded. Things like the steel stakes, rebar, some of the cement blocks, the concrete, mortar etc was drawn from the same supplies as that for the retainer wall, etc. My pure guess would be at least $4000 dollars in materials, with redwood frame, 10mm twinwall, Sundance aluminum trim parts, block wall, steel, stucco. The brick in the floor came from a re-use of an old patio we removed years ago. Add labor and well...you can imagine. We (my dw and I) have wanted a gh for years and years. The decision to build one was driven more by "now is the time" and less by "what will it cost". No one should assume that I ever did a cost/benefit analysis on the concept, or like Nathan, had the clear objective to build in the most material and energy-wise manner. Notice that our house is a 1920's "cottage" look, small house. We would not have put up a "modern design" metal frame green house even if it had been given to us....that was just our personal taste. Something as basic as the decision to build a high knee wall came as much from "I liked the look" (plantbabies, note the similarity to the gh on the cover of one of those books I sent?) as the reality that the location was not ideal and a solid wall would block no significant winter sun anyway. I've wondered if some visitors who are so enthused about a new greenhouse get discouraged when so much trial and error, and expense is involved and the first year results don't look like the dude's. I see the same questions over and over about heat, cool, shade, water and electricity and then the questioners disappear. I've seen pelleted pentas seed for sale, Barb, but saved seed has never germinated for me. Cuttings root fairly easily in late summer for keeping over in the greenhouse, and small pots of pentas are not expensive. Sometimes they survive the winter here, sometimes not, so I take a few cuttings as insurance. I just like to see cuttings grow and bloom. I'm a child at heart, playing in a playhouse and easily entertained. I hope the baby is healthy and all are well. The only thing about being a Grandmother is, you have to live with a Grandpa and they can be so sappy over a young'un. LOL. Nell

Folks...I guess I was having a "senior moment", or maybe it's a blonde thing...but whatever it was, I incorrectly labeled the dl above that I called Strawberry Masquerade. It's really "Raspberry Masquerade" DUH!!! I knew it was one of those berry ones!!! LOL Sorry bout that....I'll try to pay closer attention from now on. Wow you have so many cool plants. What is that in the 3rd picture? And is that yellow one in pic 7 an african impatien? I saw those in my burpee catalog they look really cool, I never even thought about overwintering them I figured they were annuals. I hope one of the garden centers around here gets those. Very Nice! I envy your orchids, I have 2 phals and 2 oncs, None are even a year old. One of my phals did rebloom once after the original spike, how often do yours bloom?

They all look very happy to be in there. Your orchids are beautiful. It is great that you have a place just for you to relax and get away from it all - even if just for a little while.
One of my phals rebloomed too lately. I'm really just getting started in orchids~been putting it off cuz I know an addiction when I see one LOL!

Thanks. I wander out there all hours of the day and night. It's better then hiding out in the bathroom. lol The 3rd pic is cattleya orchid buds. Most of my orchids only bloom once or twice a year. The oncidiums and lady slippers will occasionally bloom more often. Now that I have somewhere with enough humidity I'm finally going to get a Medussa. It's a type of bulbophyllum orchid. The yellow one is an auricoma impatiens, Jungle Gold, which unlike the niamniamensis (African impatiens) is an annual. I started some from seed and will see how long I can keep them going.
