Those are very nice Alan! The clumps makes such an impressive display. I really like that last one, the bukasovii. I've never seen that one before. Thank you very much for sharing!

Wonderful photos, Alan! I love group plantings, and those are most excellent! Even the plain or more common varieties look smashing in groups!

Hi, thank you for the comments, yep they look great around here in spring, a spectrum of blooms.
Have only had H. bukasovii for one season and grew very well in my shade house, would not set seed with itself, though managed to set seed on the white hippy in above image and have about 30 seedlings.
hopefully will one day have its seed avaliable for others to grow??

I love that H. bukasovii!!!! I would love to have one of that. Where did you get it? Source pleaseeeeee!!!! It's a pity it won't set seed. Good that it crosses with others. How many flowers/scape? Hahaha...Too many questions here. You got me so interested on that one. It's soooooo beautiful!!!

The interesting thing is... most, if not all, of the hybrids in Australia are different from the ones we know... I love going to MaGuire's website and seeing all the beautiful Hippeastrums they offer!

To be honest, Arif, I've never seen it offered anywhere... and I've been searching out the different species types for future purchase, hoping to add several to my breeding collection.

The only one who may have an inkling of where to find it, might be Dan... he dabbles in all sorts of unique bulbs and plants! Any ideas, Dan? I'd never even heard of this one before now... it's really lovely, isn't it?

I have been busy with the Christmass madness over here in Oz?
To answer most of you, where I got the bulb of H. bukasovii from? Was from a bromeliad collector friend who had run out of space for his broms., and needed to clear out some of his little jems like this one.

I just talked to the importer of the seed (some 40 years ago) he told me that an old man in Texas swapped seed of Australian cycads for species hippeastrums he had.
I do not know of any one else, who has this plant at present? though will offer seed of it when it finally does manage to produce viable seed?

jodik, after seeing the African bulbs on offer to you I checked Maguire's Hippeastrum website and purchased several of their new bulbs, it almost a case of feeling you have the better choice of bulbs and I know you possibly feel similar, that I have a better choice, I call it addiction and one day I will hopefully give all these plants up and still be happy????

Yes Hippeastrums when grown in a warmer climate do put on a magnificent display when allowed to from clumps. Don't know the names of the hybrids in the above images though when they come out the show is eye catching... Hope you all have a chance to relax and be at ease for the Christmas and New Years period. I will not be on the forum for a while? so all the best................. :o)

Yes, bulbs seem to develop quickly into an addiction, and for me, it's the species Hippeastrums and other rare Amaryllids that satisfy my need to grow. When it comes to growing, it seems we all want that which we can't have... you want the hybrids and types we can easily get, and we want the ones you can obtain easily enough! It's the same from north and south... I'd love to grow outdoors all year long, and some from the south would love to grow some of the items that require a cold dormancy, like things I take for granted here in the north. Such is the way of gardening, I think!

doubt you will obtain seed unless you can obtain a different clone,most species appear to be self infertile .
Maybe using Papilio pollen will get you a close primary hybrid,
A grower had bukasovii here in Western Australia back in the early 1990 but it would never self and eventually perished.

If only we can wish one of these and have one... H. bukasovii, what a beauty! why is it so difficult to find this species? IF, you could find them.
Wouldn't it be interesting if we can make a list of the sources of these beauties, so that we can all enjoy them? Or at least have the hope that may be some day (after saving penny by penny) we can have/afford one.
