Can I plant my Brug outside?

Can I plant outside if I normally leave my brugs in the ground overwinter? I ask because The GH is getting cramped. I have a few that are wellll rooted in pots and leafed out. Would it do anything worse that burn up the foiage and make it go dormant? It has only been hitting freezing once to twice a week this winter. I would just like a little more seed room. Let me know. Its too late to get the roots established now. If you are anything like us the coldest weather isn't here yet. Don't let it fool you into losing your plants. Take some in the house and let them go dormant if you need more room.

Well, I uncovered some of my brugs today. They already have some green sprouts. I removed the leaf mulch but I kept the black flower pots nearby as covers just in case we have a frost. The 10 day forecast is calling for 37 degrees one night next week so I may have to cover them as a precaution. Otherwise, the 10 day forecast shows good temps. Just remember, we had a frost on March 31 a couple of years ago, the first frost since Feb. 15. On April 4, 1985 we had snow in the peach blossoms here in metro Birmingham. Will we have another hard freeze? I doubt it. If you plant them in the ground, be sure they are well drained and you can cover them.

Mix 1 part rubbing alcohol, 4 parts water and a dash of Murphey's oil soap. Spray with this every other day for a while and the spider mites should go bye-bye. Also, just a regular (daily) misting from a sprinkler does wonders. But do it in the evening.

Aloe does not need as much water in the winter, so they may look a little wrinkled. But I think when they are looking wrinkly is when it is time to water them. They can get brown tips from the lack of water, but if you don't water them at all the brown can spread down the leaves. They will still need light, but be careful of putting them too close to a window that gets really cold. Maybe someone who grows them indoors all the time can chime in - or you can search for growing them indoors. I don't think they are supposed to look dead during the winter months.

If they have established roots, they should be able to go out without any trouble. You can put them in an empty border, I would suggest using an appropriate mulch if drying is a concern in your area. Minis love the outdoors. Cheers, Michelle :-)

NO!Like Kristy said it's too late in the season for it to become established. Even if the temps don't get below or to freezing often it's too cold. You can trim off the foliage and even cut back the stems to keep them small. You might delay flowering next season but it shouldn't be a big delay. Plant it outside in the spring.

I have some Manderville seed pods still on the plant in the GH not ready yet. I will save you some.

Here you are looking for new seed then cuttings at BGI to start and looking for somewhere to move Brugs out becoz of no room????????

Find a spot in a room somewhere...Even if they don't get "lots" of light as warmth is better...(I learned that from you professional guys on here :))

I have all mine in 4 different rooms in front of their windows...If they start reaching for light, I just turn them.

Will start leaving the bedroom lights on during the day if need be.

I can't wait until next fall to figure out how I'm going to put 30 or so new brugs in my 8X8 greenhouse...lol

No, the roots have to be in the ground and growing there before it gets cold to get established. I planted the last ones of mine in October and I'm afraid that was even too late since we got cold so much earlier than usual. I don't know if they will come back or not since they didn't have time for the roots to start spreading out in the ground probably.

Knotz why don't you just plant all of them in the ground this spring and leave them. They'll winter over in your zone and you don't have to worry about schlepping them inside. You could always take cuttings just in case but they should be ok. Even if you keep them in containers you can just allow them to go dormant so you can use the GH for tender tropicals. If I was just a couple zones warmer it would make gardening a heII of a lot easier but here I sit in subfreezing temps : (

Well thanks. I was trying to overextend myself this winter and see blooms in the GH But I just made things very crapmed. Oh well not to much longer. Next year I know how to do it. LOL

OKAY WHAT if I just move the Pot outside? DOnt take it out the pot and add Pinestraw to the top? is that doable?

J4J I wouldn't do that because the roots might freeze being above ground. Why don't you just stick the pot in the basement or garage?

Storage shed? Exposed pot will be too cold. You could wrap a roll of carpet padding around it though. Ugly but it would keep it warm. I did that with a lemon tree once outside. Then drop a blanket over the top to protect it from frost on freezing nights and uncover during the day and you could keep it growing like that unless we get quite a few days of cold then it might go dormant if you leave the top covered to block the light.
