What the heck is eating my leaves?

I noticed that almost all of my brugs at ground level (have some on shelves outside) (yes, I'm zone 10a, so they're always outside) have holes in the leaves. Do snails/slugs eat brugs? Why can't they be poisonous for THEM? *lol*

Greetings from the slug capitol of the U.S.! In a single word.......YES!!! Slugs definitely eat leaves and will even feed on the trunks...may possibly eat roots if they gain entry into pots via drain holes. I suspect their cousins, the snails, also chow down on them.

I had slug issues this past season, but didn't use any slug bait. I spread a layer of shredded tree roots on the ground, then placed my potted brugs on that. Very few slugs were willing to cross the splintery wood. My sanguineas had to have a shadier location and faired pretty well sitting on a sandy berm beneath some fir trees. As long as the fine sandy soil stayed dry, the slugs stayed away. Wood ash is also supposed to deter slugs. Copper strips, too.

EGG SHELLS! Cheap, easey and my Brugs love 'em. Slugs and snails won't cross them either. We also give all trespassing snails free flying lessons. :) I've also heard to put out a small bowl of beer for them. Supposedly that will deter them from your plats.

The seedlings are anywere from 2 days to 2 weeks in the ground, making them 8-10 weeks old. Some of the plants were very frail and others were pretty tough. As we've gone along, the plant killer has moved higher on the the stems. My most recent attempt, which was right before the mouse theory here, was to put a small cone of plastic rabbit fence around each plant. It created about a six inch diameter circle around the 11 remaining seedlings. I figured that if it is a small rabbit, I would either keep it out or at least be able to see the way the animal got around the barrier. I'm down to 9 plants now. two more have been cut off right above the 8 inches of vinyl tubing that I put on the protect the stems. There was no visible disturbance of the cone. It's like it either came down from the sky or up from the ground. I planted the remaining five seedlings in large pots and put them by my front porch. At least they'll get me a few nice tomatoes this season, but it looks like I won't be needing my canning supplies in August. As for next year, I'm going to start working on a plan for some sort of wire mesh cones that will be burried in the ground around the plants. If it is a mouse, it is more than likely that this particular one will be dead by this time next year, and that others won't share it's desire to kill my tomato seedlings. However, I'll be prepared just in case.

Yes, rose slugs, saw fly larvae. They're green (the same color as the foliage, because they're eating it) and they are small. Lots of fun! They like "green house conditions" where it's warm and humid, as if you were standing in a green house. When it dries up (IF it dries out) and/or it gets HOT, they will move off to higher elevations and/or shadier environs. The longer those conditions remain, the longer they remain there and active. Whether you choose to treat against them or not and what method to use will depend upon how long you anticipate those conditions to last. If "spring" is short and summer is too hot for them, I'd leave them alone and let Nature push them on their way, but that's up to you. Good luck!

Greenseeker, I have tried egg shells before but they didn't work for me... :( I just may not have had enough of them..I dunno.. I've also tried the beer and that seems to attract them to the area. Some drown in the beer, but it definately doesn't eleminate them, plus it's a waste of beer. So then I tried diatamaceous earth and that didn't seem to phase them, but I was only using it about once a week, and probably should have been using it daily. As a last resort (and I hate pesticides), I used a systematic. That didn't work either so I gave up. I'd love to hear what someone has tried and had success with on brugs in the ground. Greenseeker, about how many eggshells are you talking about around one single plant, and how long do they last for you?

Romando, my thoughts about slugs & snails are the same as yours. Why aren't brugs poinsonous to them?!?!?

Here is a link about slugs that was discussed on the brug forum earlier this year. There is a concoction of ammonia and water that can be used on slugs and will not hurt your plants. GL
