What genus and species?

Hello Everyone. I was given this bromeliad by a client and I would love to know what it is. I think it may be an Aechmea but I know for sure it is not chantinii (forgive my spelling). It is the one on the right hand middle of the totem I constructed. (the dark plant with the silvery bands). It has yet to bloom after a couple of years. I was giving it too much sun at first so I moved some of the pups to the totem in the shade. Here is the picture... thank you in advance for the help. Mike

Possibly Aechmea fasciata var. purpurea. That's a very cool setup you have there.

but probably Billbergia 'Muriel Waterman'.

Hmmmm..... it's kind of hard to tell at that distance whether you've got an Aechmea or Billbergia. It's not Ae. fasciata, but I have seen some Ae. chantinii hybrids (not straight chantinii) with very similar markings, and the leaves do look a bit stiffer and cleaner than Billbergia leaves often do.

The way it's clumping makes me think Billbergia, though. If it was a chantinii hybrid or similar Aechmea, it would most likely have creeping stolons. I'm not seeing that, but then I can't see down into the pot.

Gonzer's call of Bill. 'Muriel Waterman' could very well be it. There are a number of dark banded Billbergia hybrids though, so I don't think I'm going to commit just yet. Do you see any faint whitish spotting on the leaves? If so, that would help confirm it as a Billbergia. Also, a look at the spines might help. Got a closer pic?

Thanks for the information. I would have never guessed Billbergia but the spines look very close to what I have. I see a lot of similarities to Aechmea species too. The way I potted up the pups is kind of misleading. I collected the pups from the main clump that burnt up in the sun. I put them all in the same pot which makes them look like clump formers. If I recall it sends out stolons like the Aechmeas do. Are the Murial Waterman Billbergias very cold hardy? Any more information is greatly appreciated. Mike

I've never had a problem with cold damage Mike except for a freak hail storm months ago which 'spotted' the leaves along with my Hohenbergia stellata. Those were the only two plants affected out of many.
