Butterfly Garden

Great day at the nursery!

Okay, it was Home Depot. :) But still!

Scored a HUGE 5 gallon WHITE buddleia for the 1 gal price (savings of about 11 dollars--wow!) since they had no gallon size buddleia left.

A Burgandy Iceberg rose...not useful for butterflies, but...WOW!! What a COLOR!! If it has the generous habit of its progenitor there will be LOTS of blooms coming.

Couple gallon-pots of CA poppies for the bees to pollen from. Don't see a whole lot of those here, guess it's time to buy more seed and start chucking it out the windows again. :)

Gallardia, Gaura lindheimeri, scabiosas, alyssum saxatile, a tomato....oh yes and a few freesias to smell the place up nicely. :)

Take ten bucks off in the promotion credit card thing they sent me in the mail and it was a VERY good day.

Of course, the damages at the OTHER nurseries were extensive, but what did you expect? It's SPRING! :)

Fuzzy purple mexican sage, alyssum, tall verbena, Lynchnis, wallflowers, Caryopteris, ceanothus, penstemon, columbine, milkweeds, buckwheats, jasmine.....

Welcome to the Season Of Melting Plastic! Unless of course, you pay by check... :)

Wow! I know my poor Buddleia took a beating this year for some reason and it is time for me to replace 'em...

I think there are a number of us who are not rcvg our member pg emails. the arboretum is open through every gate; nothing is off limits garden-wise. 4 ponds and waterfalls in the back along with a number of 'garden rooms'. so glad you got introduced to us and hope you come back soon, as things get raggier by the minute this time of yr.! if a car is in the driveway, i'm here, so plse introduce yourself if you're feeling sociable! best, mindy

Day to day stresses and tasks of a nursery.

Before I became a nurseryman, I worked as a manager in a small family run technical/scientific business of about 30 people. I estimate about 90% of the stresses associated with the job were staff related. Not enough staff, too many staff, staff motivation, who to lose in tough periods, how to hire good staff in times of expansion, pay demands, staff motivation, interstaff disputes, theft/abuse of priveleges, how to keep the really good staff working for us and not leave for the competitors, staff motivation etc. etc. etc. Nowadays as a go it alone husband and wife team the biggest stress is how to make ends meet. After that its just a case of trying to get as many tasks on the impossibly long list accomplished. The recent installation of a semi-automatic irrigation system has certainly relieved some of the stress as we come into summer . No more 5am starts to water the nursery by hand! Plus I have my trumpet to keep me sane. Everybody business owner should have a stress release away from the nuts and bolts of the day to day tasks - even if we love what we do!!

Another "clousy" day in N. Central Florida. Great day for gardening!

I finished off the front garden by the fence. Dug in and put upright the boards along the edge to keep the yard crew from killing everything. Planted a row of bromeliads, moved some cannas, pulled some oyster plant encroaching on the sidewalk and planted a border of it on the front bed, planted a Charles Grimaldi brug and discovered some sprouting elephant ears I forgot I had planted in there. Then to top it all off, I pulled out some different colored four o'clock seeds I had traded for and planted those along the back by the fence for the hummingbirds, so they'll grow out and around the taller plants. Then I cleared out the trash pile of limbs and branches & tossed them into the dumpster. All that took 3 hours. I'm exhausted, so now I'm going to take a shower and relax for the rest of the day.

Sherry, I had no idea you could get notice of garden specials at HD! Thanks so much for turning me on to them. I'm gonna definitely sign up because HD is a place I visit often during the gardening year, for soil, stakes, fertilizer, trellises, plants, gardening tools, whatever!

Congrats on all your plants, Pam! Even at their common prices, they had those 5-gallon butterfly bushes (boy, were they HUGE) last year for $15. They must have been about 6' tall when I saw them, and about 4' wide. That's still a darned good price for a large plant like that. Woo-hoo, you got a 5-gal for a 1-gal price! Those of stories I LOVE to hear. I know you're planning to segregate those milkweeds before offering them up, huh? HD always sprays their plants.

Milkweed didn't come from HD; they came from a native nursery that considers caterpillars on their plants a bonus. :) :) :)

The HD stuff is mostly nectar plants, and I've seen healthy cats on some of their stuff that went on to pupate just fine--maybe they got lucky?

I was so excited I didn't tell you truth--the major bargains were at Lowe's, not HD. LOL!! Teach me to post after a long day!

HD online notification, eh? Wonder if Lowe's does the same thing?

Yep! Lowe's Garden Club that you can sign up for. You get emails about their specials and helpful hints, pointers, etc.
