Brugmansia Hardiness - And The Winners Are?

Hi All-

I posted this message in the Exchanges area, but I feel it doesn't strictly fall into that category. I would like to hear other peoples observations on Brugmansia hardiness.

Are some of your seedlings more hardy than others? Do some flower more early in the season? Is 'Charles Grimaldi' the cold king?

I'm new here. I've really enjoyed the site!

I purchased a 'Charles Grimaldi' a few years ago at a gardening convention and have really enjoyed it. So much so that I would like to try some of these in ground in my mild 8b climate.

I have been reading these boards and other sites and came up with a list of varieties that have reportedly good cold tolerance. They are:

Betty Marshall

Dr. Seuss

Charles Grimaldi

Becca Lynn

Brugmansia sanguinea

others that have hardy blood:

(Charles Grimaldi) -'Goldkrone', 'Goldrausch', 'Habanera', 'Luminosa', 'Marie Gerrits', 'Charisma', 'Feingold'

(Betty Marshall) - 'Kyle's Giant White'

If anybody has any of these and can spare a few cuttings for my project, I would happily send you postage or a pre-paid return envelope. I do have a few items to trade:

Welcome to the forum Mark. I do believe that is a pretty hardy list there, I think ou can add Isabella and Frosty Pink to it as I've heard that they are old reliables too. Sorry no cutting shere to spare, I only have CG and it is just a cutting, and my sangs were just planted as seed a few weeks ago. You may want to get some sang seed and grow them out because that one is notoriously hard to root. Stick around and I'm sure you will be able to get cuttings maybe in the spring or definately in the fall. Most of our brugs have already been cut long ago and are sleeping for the winter. I see you are zone 8. I'm not sure but I think you can leave most brugs in the ground in that zone, you may not have to limit ourself to the tried and true ones.

Yep, I think most of them are hardy in zone 8 but the variegated ones I would keep growing indoor in the winter and maybe some of the slower growing ones.

rpcollector, Welcome to GW. I am your neighbor to the north in Indiana. I thought you might like to know it would be best to put an email link on your member page as everyone else does. It makes it much easier for trading than having to hunt a post back up, or having to write it down for future reference. Hi Eddie - I've been keeping my eyes on your listings. Many times I've wanted to push the "buy it now" button. Hi Kylie - you're absolutely right, spending a little more will buy me some time in that I can see blooms sooner. Hi Eloise - yes, I'm in and out of the various forum. Getting into more trouble...buying more plants that is. Plumerias has moved down a notch to #2 and roses has taken over the #1 spot :) And there is yet another plant sale hosted by our water district today...so maybe another addition to the "pot ghetto"? I'm in Riverside County, and where are you Eloise? As for trading, I have never done that before and really am nervous about the receiving end, will they be happy or not. I've done the postage thing before and sent postage money before item was sent, that's how I got the brugmansia that I killed. It was from a really nice man name Joe from Tennessee. Kasie

Brugs aren't hardy here. You have to bring them inside for the winter. When they come in they bring every bug the world in with them. I keep mine in a large pot with holes cut in the side. The pot gets planted in the ground for the summer and the roots grow through the holes. It can be kept in the basement in the winter if you water it occasionally. Some years I keep it on my backporch so it won't die to the ground - they are much more beautiful then they can be viewed from below.

Charles Grimaldi grows here in NC. The woman who has it in her yard cuts it down every fall. It was about 6' tall this year and loaded with blooms. She also has a pink flowering, but it's a NOid.

When I was living in the in western Nc there was a lady who had a solid white brungmansia that grew in her back yard which she treated like any other perennial.

Bad time for cuttings Mark. I think people have to see what they get through the winter also and no good time to ship them right now either.

But we are thrilled that you are expanding your collection....trust me. It will GROW before you know it lol.
