Hybridizer's Nightmare

First, hybridizers know to save one pod for themselves and not share, right? Second, you know you have a very special pod and so you put it up!! Ya share the others with your testers knowing you have one special one for yourself. Yea we have been known to save the best seedpod for ourself.

Don't laugh, now some of us are Seniors!! I put last year's D. Albino pod up and have been looking for it for a year!! I FOUND IT!!!

Does this tell you I have to many seeds or I'm older than dirt??

lmao Karma..I have no clue how old you are, but I am 31 and it happens to me all the time with EVERYthing!! I feel for ya girl! Always thinking, I'll put this here, it'll be safe and I'll never forget where it is, such an easy spot. 15 mins later I dont know where the hell I put it, lol. And it doesnt help to write it down..I'll lose the paper, or the whole dang notebook! In '06 I bought DH an anniversary card early, hid it..To this day I still haven't found it. He thinks I lied and never bought one! I'll find it someday when we move, lol.

Is the pod any good still?

Your reply from JP sounds like an automated response. I'd bet no human being ever even saw your original email, let alone typed in the response. It sounds to me like a canned script that picks up your name from your email, retrieves the ship date of your order from their database, and then sends out this automated reply. No, there is no Barbara. It's all just a computer database script. That's the direction customer service has been going for some years now. I'm sorry you've had such trouble. They used to be an ok company. The roses in your photo don't look all that bad, but the service was horrible. And yes bare root roses are often shipped totally bare, no sawdust or anything. The white fuzzy stuff on shipped roses is usually botrytis. Light infestations die off quickly once the plant is in the open air, but heavier infestations have to be trimmed off. Let's hope your roses grow fine!

Henry I'm so glad Newfoundland and the Labrador counties are trying to do something about these pesticides which yes, does ban the one I'm most concerned about. What bothers me is what happens to competitors who start up far more benign products?? I'm going to code what these products were: One is harpoon, take out the double oo and put in an i, cmpss first missing vowel is an o, last missing vowel is an a, mssgr think of Microsoft (fill-in-the-blank), those products are all gone! Even googling these products are hard. Ironically no listings of the specific ingredients packaging labeling can be seen either and other suspicious things going on, the unavailability for a home consumer to even attempt to purchase, etc. The so-called company that bought out mssgr if you look at the code there's no engine optimization that you can find on that ghost site. Site industry practice is to embed the landing page with srch eng optmz. Nothing on the site to keep the m product current and available. It's just not looking good...Pretty scary. Jeri, I am so glad you mentioned this! The link made the error of saying lime bush. It is actually a dwarf lime tree THANK YOU! Here is what the link says: Rodale reported one lime bush could keep one hive in nectar all season and one acre of anise hyssop has been said to be enough nectar for 100 hives. Jeri, I hope you are able to save that Mexican Bar Lime tree. I wish I were able to grow them too! lol! Jeri, I get swarms of honeybees now. You know you've done good when you can see all that frenetic buzzing 15' feet away. In a way I'm blessed because Kansas honeybees are so crazy about Russian sage that they seem to stay in the safety of my garden. Maybe someday I'll be able to see them an entire block away to remind folks as they bicyle or drive through that hey, organics are feeding the honeybees and helping them survive. I'm just hoping everyone can help pitch in with promoting the well-being of the natural world. Maybe have just a quiet talk with customers that you see who are moving towards those bags of lawn treatment....sort of inform them, at least let them know...

Passiflora 'Raspberries and Cream' ?? A P. gritensis hybrid

I remembered I never followed up on this one. I found out, with the help of several people, that the cross was made by Roland Fischer and is P. subpeltata x P. gritensis. Seeds from the same fruit gave the hybrid 'Pink Nightmare', which is grown in Europe. Seeds were given to Mark Cooper, who raised the hybrid 'Raspberries and Cream'. The plant grew well for me. However, it tends to wilt in the hot afternoon sun. It is not clear to me whether the plant is somewhat of a cool grower (reflecting the P. gritensis parent) or whether it needs more water than I provide it... My Bradford Pear Nightmare

sweetpea82, if your Bradford Pear is already splitting, I'd have a tree removal company come and take it down immediately. You don't want the tree to split and take half of your porch down with it. I cannot understand why people are so vehemently against Bradford Pears. It's okay if people don't like them, but some people do (otherwise, they'd never be planted). I have 4 Bradford Pears lining my driveway, and I absolutely adore the shade they give. And their beautiful fall colors are incredible every year! They're not messy trees with only the fall leaf drop which is relatively fast, beautiful on the ground for a few weeks (due to the colored leaves), and then makes for great compost when cleaned up. I will admit, I did not know about their short life or splitting when I planted them (they were recommended because their root system could be planted next to the driveway and foundation). But even though I now know what will happen in the future, I can at least enjoy the trees while they're still young enough to be healthy. I don't agree that they'll split in only 6-8 years. That's not at all what I've read, seen in my neighborhood or experienced myself. From what I know, they'll last between 15-20 years, depending on how sheltered or exposed to the wind they may be and whether or not a high wind tropical storm or hurricane passes through (but these storms cause damage to a lot of trees, not just Bradford Pears). I planted my Bradford Pears about 12 years ago, and so far, so good. From what I've understood, the splitting normally occurs when the trees reach the latter stages of maturity. While young, they maintain a beautiful pyramid shape. However, when they fully mature, the canopy will open up which then causes the branches to start hanging outward from the center of the tree. This is when the splitting usually occurs. The tree cannot hold the weight of the outwardly hanging branches, and the pressure causes the tree to split where it forks at the trunk. As far as planting a crape myrtle so close to the porch, be careful to pick one that is disease and pest resistant. Many crape myrtles can be attacked by pests, most especially aphids which are then "milked" by ants. This causes honeydew to be dropped from the tree, causing sooty mold on the leaves and making a mess of everything underneath the tree. There are times in which I've watched my crape myrtles look like they're "raining" or "crying" as the honeydew is dropping off the trees so much. To remedy this, of course you can spray the tree, but the question then becomes whether you want to be spraying your tree so close to your porch. Depending on the layout of your lot and porch, you may want to consider a larger, more permanent tree further away from the porch that will give you a lot of shade in the long run. You could plant a fast growing, short lived tree close to the porch now while you allow the permanent tree to grow large enough to give you the shade you want, and then remove the temporary tree later on. I have two beautiful Live Oak trees in my backyard which give me the most glorious shade for my patio. Even though my patio is covered, the sun will still heat things up in the Summer. By planting trees all over my front, side and back yards, my entire property is much cooler in general so my patio is not only shaded, but the air all around my house is cooler. The other benefit by having large, permanent trees on your property is that as they grow larger, they won't just shade your porch, but they'll shade the roof of your house which will actually help to lower your air conditioner bills in the Summer. I have also found that the shade creates a wonderful gardening environment with dappled shade cooling off the plants, giving them some protection from the scorching mid-summer heat, but still allowing enough sunlight to come through for flowering plants to flourish. Furthermore, if you ever wish to sell your house, permanent trees raise the selling value of your house and help your house to sell more quickly because the trees create a more desirable environment overall. You may want to contact your county's Extension Agency for a list of recommended trees in your area. Consider how big the trees will grow at maturity (height and width), what diseases and/or pests they are susceptible to, and whether their roots cause known problems (such as you cannot plant a Live Oak close to a sidewalk, driveway or foundation because the roots will crack the concrete and Crape Myrtle roots tend to rise to the surface and can sometimes sucker quite a bit), how fast the tree grows, and how long they usually live. You may also want to look for a university close by that's into agriculture which may have a list of recommended trees. I find that Texas A&M University has a lot more information than my local county extension agency. One other tree I just thought of that you might want to consider is a Holly tree. Look for the ones that are known to grow well in your area. Many of them are gorgeously dark green year-round and have a beautiful display of red berries in the fall which is very attractive to many birds. The one caveat is that their flowers in the spring attract a lot of bees. While the bees cause no harm, many people are afraid of them so you may not feel comfortable having them so close to your porch. Also keep in mind that a large number of bushes can be grown in tree form. The basic Ligustrum, which is usually used for hedges, can be grown into small trees (ditto on the bee issue in the Spring). But look around as there might be a bush that, when properly shaped, can grow into a tree form to suit your needs. If you want immediate shade, you can buy a more mature shrub/tree and have the nursery plant it for you. Just stick with container grown; never get a tree that's been transplanted from one of those huge spade trucks. The transplanted trees take longer to recover from the transplant than it takes for a smaller, container grown tree to grow. The only exception to buying a mature tree is the Redbud as it does not like to have its roots disturbed, and the more mature the tree, the more risk of it dying when planted (not to mention, they're short-lived trees and you don't want them to only have a few years left after you plant them). Okay, I'm sure that's way too much information! LOL! Hopefully, something I've suggested will be helpful. Whatever you end up doing, I wish you the best of luck!

I have mothers day cards, and birthday cards, xmas cards, you name it.

All BLANK - I find them everywhere thinking "ok, I'm set for X's bday" whatever.

Nope. End up getting another one. Hate that.

Thank goodness some of my friends - we have joke going - we "regift" cards. We try to see who can come up with the oldest card from someone. (Use liquid paper on the signature) I never win - can't remember where I put them. (grin)

Glad you found your seeds Karma. Lol, we moved here almost a year ago and I have been looking for some special seeds my husband has grown every year of some kind of squash that looks like a gourd kind of green and white striped. It is sooooo good in stir fries and soups. I lost the seeds and we didn't get to grow any this year (frown) he and his friends were very upset with me. They always pass by the shop and check and see if any look big enough to pick and fight over them. We usually grow them in a planter and let them climb the telephone pole but by the time the deer get ahold of them we don't get too many per season. He was really looking forward to growing them here now that we have house and can protect them. I am going to have to grow several this year to make up for it, lol. I wish I knew what they are. If these seeds aren't any good I don't know how I will ever find them again. I had packed them in a box with some things that I thought would get unpacked right away at the new house and we never unpacked it. Its amazing the things you have and never miss being without it for a year, lol.

KHT that sounds like something that I'd do. I'm forever misplacing or forgetting things, especially seeds. Of course they are always some special seed that I can't easily get more of. I'm glad you found your pod and even happier for you that you know what it is. I have a bad habit of setting seeds down and thinking I know what it is and will mark it later. There's no way I won't remember the variety. Yeah right, famous last words. lol

Kristy I might have seeds from the squash you are looking for. Is it about the size of a football, dark green with white streaks and some bumpy areas like a gourd? I might have a pic of one somewhere. If this sounds like it might be what you are looking for let me know. I have an over-ripe one left that I was going to toss in the compost pile but will get the seeds if you want them.

I have no idea what it's called and didn't know I'd grown it until I saw it. I'll scoop the seeds out and put them in the mail on Monday. They'll still be moist. I hope that won't be a problem. It's a pretty fruit and holds up well.

They should be fine wrapped in paper towels. Thats how I dried mine. Thanks and they do last for a long time if its the same thing. If not I will just grow another kind and maybe they wont' know the difference, lol.

Karma.. So glad you found your pod.. It has to be you just have to many seed...LOL When I put things in a "safe" spot.. I am usually the only one they are safe from...LOL I will never see them again.. I have been looking for my garage door opener for 2 yr.s It is somewhere safe...

I'm in my 30's and I still misplace things..got no excuse either lol. Oh well.. they eventually all turn up but I have some things that I've had in storage or boxes that I prob haven't laid eyes on in 3-4 yrs! I should really do what the experts say. "if you haven't used it in the last 6mos., throw it away!" haha that would be half our junk- but I'm sure it would be alot easier to find stuff then.

All I can say is Welcome to my World. Oh and just a little FYI it doesn't get any better as you age. Too bad we're not like a good bottle of wine and get better as we age. I hate to be the person to tell you this...but it's all down hill after 50. The eye's start to fail, the hearing is not nearly as good, the things on your chest droop to your belly buttons and so forth. Oh and let's not forget that paper thin skin that bruises if you get too close to anything. Did I mention that the hair on the top of your head gets a whole lot thinner? Some of the older people also have to take their teeth out at night when we go to bed. Some have to wear depends cause their bladders don't work like they use to. (Thankfully I don't have either of the last two problems I mentioned......yet) LOL

I'm always putting stuff in a safe place. Just like all of them said, the only thing it's safe from is me finding it again. Have you also noticed that things that use to take you half an hour to do now take half a day? Grin
I know things are going to get better, I just don't think it will be any time soon. LOL

Now if I can just remember how to send this post I'll have it made.

Ya know - I'm all for the "if you haven't been in the box in the last 3-4 months toss it" but - THOSE are probably boxes with KEEPsakes. That's what I'M afraid of.

I'm just not going to do it. And frankly - I don't have a daughter, but I'm not tossing the box with my wedding dress in it (ok - yea - first wedding - SHUT UP! -grin-)

Photo albums - pictures of when I used to be SKINNY - juuuuuuuuust kidding - but seriously - it's more about getting them sorted than tossing them.

And why can't I get my grandmother to STOP giving me those SILLY weird hand made basket halloween-xmas-thanksgiving-doll-face things that sit on the counter holding candy? it's not that SHE makes them - she BUYS them from her FRIENDS who she feels she needs to keep in business. (grin)

And I'm gonna SLAP whoever came up with the idea of "Easter Egg Trees" where you then give ORNAMENTS for an Easter Egg Tree.

As if I dont' have ENOUGH trouble finding stuff? And now that?

LAST year I got a HALLOWEEEN TREE. . .now COMON maaaaaaaaan. . . .we're gettin' stupid about thiiiiiiiiiis! (sarcastic grin)

Enough of my rant. I can't even find all my underwear - much less deal with boxes of ornaments from Xmas, easter and halloween trees. (grin)

OMG lol I have ornaments for a stupid easter egg tree but I didnt get a tree for it lol. So for the last 10 yrs I've had these stupid eggs and rabbits and ducky things just kicking around getting shuffled from box to box. The kids thought they were xmas ornaments lol and said, "why do we have easter eggs for the xmas tree" ha!

Remember when scrapbooking was in a few yrs ago? well I got tons of paper, doodads, scissors, you name it and got all my photos together organized in some big rubbermaid tubs. Well guess what? Most of them are all still there...UN-Scrapped!

Hey - I'll send you this miserable stupid Easter Tree - how's THAT! I've got TWO of them - one is CERAMIC - and the other is this wire, bendy, thinggggguh!

And THEN - I'll send you the equally as miserable HALLOWEEN tree - with it's littley tiny hanging bats and pumpkins!

Sheesh. . .hate those things.
