We made our own, with granite leftover from the raised area of the island. The fabricators who did the rest of the granite made the tabletop, and included a fitted piece of plywood to go under it to provide extra support. The plywood is covered by the granite overhang from the top. We chose oak for our table base for strength, but hard maple would be good too. A granite tabletop is seriously heavy, and we didn't want the legs to go splaying under the weight. Remember this when you need to move the top and if you don't have sturdy workmen around to move it, get some burly friends to help. I got 4" thick, tapered oak island legs from Osbornewood.com. DH, who likes to build things and studies structural engineering as a hobby, built the table this way: 1. We separated the plywood underpiece from the granite top and set the top in a safe place - on top of the front porch table in our case. 2. Using oak 1x3's, DH built an apron that fit the shape of the plywood top, then drilled, glued and screwed the apron to the top. He set the screws into the top of the plywood, and then screwed them down in to the apron wood. 3. DH drilled, glued and screwed the table legs in to the plywood top at the corner formed by 2 sides of the apron. Then he set 2 screws running through the apron wood into the leg on each side of the apron. He staggered the placement points of these screws so they didn't run into another screw in the leg wood, and countersank the drilled screw holes so we could fill the holes with an ornamental plug. 4. DH bought casters at Home Depot and set them in to the bottom ends of the table leg. 5. We carefully slid the tabletop onto the structure and jimmied it around until it fit down flat everywhere. 6. Our table is designed to dock into the upper part of our island, and part of it fits into a niche there, where the top could come into contact with the cabinetry. To prevent scraping damage we lined the edges of the stone top that might chafe with strips of the adhesive, "felt furniture feet" type stuff you put under wood furniture to protect your floors. Works like a champ, and you can peel it off pretty easily if you don't want it to show. Now all that's left is for me to paint the legs and apron white to match the cabinetry, though there is one glitch in the plan. When you've got a 30" tabletop, and 4" thick table legs, that only leaves about 20"(what with clearances) to get yourself and your barstool under the top. Easy for a little skinny-minnie, but I'm nearly 6' and carrying at least 20 pounds more than I should, so it does get a little tight on the narrow sides. You might want to plan accordingly. I got this on eBay last October. It's from the 1960s, made in Italy, solid brass base with faux bamboo look, and glass top. It's 30"x18"x16" high. I LOVE it, paid $341, and later found 2 sellers on 1stdibs selling it for $1000 and $1575 respectively. I have seen one on eBay since, so if you like it, you might keep your eyes open there. It had just been delivered when I took this pic, so that's why it's so bare. I don't know where you live, but this one is on the Maine Craigslist for $50! See the link below. I may get frustrated enough to try that. kulrn... the silver Marcia Square 43" happens to be the one I ordered in gold, that is now on long back order. I wonder how hard it would be to paint the silver one, gold? Anyone have thoughts on that? I am not beyond trying that for that price. Porter.. I have considered putting 2 rectangle ones together, 2 square wont solve problem. I have 2- 6' sofas that have to sit at right angles. The coffee table I currently have used for 17 yrs is dark wood and is 42x48. One side always got the long side, and never looked balanced. When I decided to get new one to go with newly recovered sofas, I thought Id get a square one and go light and bright, so it didnt visually take up so much space. So I was just about to post a new question here and was thinking about this thread and how so many of you wonderful humans took time out a few years ago (omg pre-pandemic!!) when I was redoing my one bedroom condo. I obvs have no idea if people continue to stay on this forum but I’m hoping at least a few people see this so I can say THANK YOU!! Long story to go along with the long years we’ve all faced from early 2020 to now, but short version is soon after I did “refreshed” my place, I moved out of the h*** that was condo living in DC amid the pandemic to stay with my folks in NC. And quickly decided I never wanted to move back to DC! So I sold my place!! And no, I do not regret for a moment the work I put into it bc (1) it looked awesome and (2) it sold within days of being on the market, at a price a tad higher than other places in my own bldg which I attribute to a bit of emotional response bc my condo looked FIRE. So thanks to everyone who made suggestions (even those I didn’t take!). I learned so much and have found so much more confidence in my ability to know what I like, how to ask for help, and most of all…not become overwhelmed with opinions!! I ask for them, but hey…people like different things, no biggie. Anyways, in case anyone is still around, thought I’d share a few pics of how it all turned out in the end. Happy spring everyone!
