Hippeastrum 'Trentino' What A Beautiful Bloom!

Hi Guys

"Trentino" is one of my favorite Hadeco varieties, it's gorgeous! The creamy white, frilly, pink lined petals meet in a lime green throat that exudes a slight sweet fragrance, it's easily admired :)

Ok...Here are some info on these varieties: Trentino source: JS 2007 flowers/scape: 7,7 and 5 bulb circumference when planted:22 1/2cm pollination: ??? Sugar Candy source: JS 2006 flowers: My record just shows 17 flowers total in 2 scapes. Bulb circumference when planted:25 1/2cm Pollination: all 17 flowers failed pollination using both diploid and tetraploid pollens. I tried to use it's pollens on other varieties but failed too. I'll try again this season when it blooms. Santa Fe Source: Easy to Grow Bulbs 2006 Flowers: No definite record as it bloomed while I was on vacation. Bulb circumference:24cm Pollination: I did get to pollinate 1 flower from first scape and 4 on second scape and used it's pollens. Fertile bothways but rejected Sugar Candy and Amputo pollens. Sir Hans...My stored pollens of Sugar Candy are dated March/2007 :-( It is currently resting with 1 leaf and 3-4 bulblets. It seems to be acting as a diploid. I will try to use it's pollens on more diploids this year. Maybe with Misty, Pink Floyd, Amputo, Estella(?) and Stripe Panther(?). Hope that helps!

You are so observant Donna! I had to stare at it a bit before remembering=) That was me. Those are narcissus bulbs, and I had just pruned their foliage back. Most of it had died away, but I got impatient and pruned back the unruly foliage so I could see the hippis better. I've since given up on narcissus. They produce loads of foliage here, but rarely bloom, just not enough chill hours. I now mix the hippeastrums with curcuma. Here's that same spot last August: If you look close you can see the hippi foliage mixed into the curcuma foliage. The curcumas don't break ground until the hippis are done blooming, so they don't obscure them, they bloom most of the summer, and their foliage provides some summer shade for the hippi foliage, which in this full sun spot they appreciate. Oh, and that tiny foliage in the foreground is zepheranthes candida. Newly planted last year, but have filled in nicely this year, giving a nice foreground border that is evergreen.

I try to keep all mine growing in high light conditions so I can get the best colors possible, the higher the light, lower humidity and cooler temps cause the colors to really come out!

Oh Josh, I am so thrilled you posted a photo of your beautiful Trentino. I just received a bulb in my Scheepers order. I am doubtful her bud will hang in there through the trauma od shipemnt and Florida temps to offer me a bloom this season...but I am hopeful! Fragrant, you say..OH BOY!!! I can't wait now.

BTW, my two babies you sent me *exotic star x pink floyd and pink floyd x exotic star* are doing very well! Thank you so so much :) I do have some H. parodii for you, I seem to have misplaced the packet of extra seed so if I can't find that I'll send you a few babies this spring!

Hi, Josh. Thanks for your wonderful description! And it's fragrant, too... Looks like that's another for my wish list. :) I'm really going to have to figure out where to put all the ones I want to get...and I can see now that I'm just getting started! It sure is fun having all of you to recommend fragrant hippies to add to my collection :)
