Frost bitten young plants

Okay, I started some amaryllis from seed two years ago and they have been growing in pots outside since. Last night I forgot to move them into the garage and they got hit by frost. The foliage on them is now wilted. Should I clip off this foliage and bring the pots inside so they resprout? Or, should I dig the bulbs and store them in the fridge? I'm guessing the bulbs are about the size of a quarter.

Mine melted last night as well. I am in Mobile, AL and I actually wanted my 2+ year olds to go dormant this year before bringing them into my patio but I didn't really want to subject them to a sudden hard freeze.

It got down to about 28 degrees? How cold was it in Atmore?

Remove the wilted foliage and put them in your garage. Let them dry out some and start watering them again when you see new growth.

Do you know the parentage of the seedlings?

Personally, I would move them inside and snip off the damaged foliage. I would keep them warm and encourage them to re-sprout. Don't you just love baby bulbs? It's so exciting to wait for them to grow large enough to bloom! It's like waiting for Christmas!!!!!

I have found that browned leaves caused by frost are generally of no usefulness in plant growth and may inhibit new leaf growth and the production of pups underground. In Canada I have found that leaving Cannas into the first week of November with leaf browning does not negatively affect rhizome growth, BUT this does differ from one canna variant to another. The indica group seems more resilient but I find the more stolon/rhizome hybridized types suffer more from frost. Hope this information was helpful.

GET OVER IT ... lol .. not much help?? let me put it in perspective for you ... i have around 1500 hosta.. all different.. i would guess ... that about 1000 of them are frost bitten this spring ... so i ask .. what are you devastated about??? leave them be.. we dont 'feed' stressed plants ... give them about a month... at that time.. go remove a few of the worst affected leaves.. and you will be surprised how good they look ... ken ps: and pray the frosts arent followed by hail storms ...

Just cut off the damaged leaves and wait for warmer weather which will trigger the growth of new leaves. Most likely what you have is Cycas revoluta, which can easily survive temps into the teens. The caudex should be fine. Be patient. New leaves form at the tops of the stems only. When lower leaves are lost, they do not regrow. If you hack off the stems, any new sprouts are unpredictable and it will take a few seasons until they appear normal again. x

Some weeds are fall annuals, the same as winter wheat. They will germinate and become established in the fall, generally taking advantage of a time of year when temperatures are cooler, competition from other plants is low because they are dying or going dormant for winter, and showers tend to provide soil moisture. Usually they don't get very big in the fall and you may not notice them. Then the next spring, when the frost goes out of the ground, they have an established root system and take off, getting a leap on the spring weeds, using the moisture that accumulated in the soil over the winter, and produce seed before the heat of summer. Many mustards will behave this way, as will cheatgrass. If you cultivate the ground before it freezes for the winter or early in the spring, they are easy to control because they are still so small and any disturbance will usually eliminate them. Herbicides will generally be very effective in the fall, also. However, herbicides have a much tougher time in the spring after the plants start to send up flower stalks or seed heads.

Elizabeth, I bought the seeds off of ebay so I'm not exactly sure of the parentage, but I think it's "Red Lion". (I think thats the right name).

When I checked around midnight last night it was 30 degrees, so it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't get down to 25 before sunrise. I guess I had my mind on other things and completely forgot about the plants.

Hi!

I have found that seedlings of Red Lion are quite hardy, so they should be fine. If you have the space and conditions to let them resprout, than I would do so.

Or, you can simply keep them in the garage and let them do their thing until spring and put them outside again.

I hope that mine will bloom this spring, but one never knows...
