Melocactus sp. 8-07 - Not sure what this one is either I know its a Melo, but thats it. Its pretty big in an 8" pot and the spines get really red/orange in summer.

Aloe verdoorniae - The tips dry out alot, I think Jeff had a gorgeous one a while back. This has its summer color. Makes alot of babies. The Aloe not Jeff, lol.

Aloe broomii - I don't see alot of these around. Its in an 8" pot.

Agave gypsophila - Biggest Agave I have. It won't fit thru the door anymore (problem I didnt forsee)so it lives in my living room in the winter. It barley fits thru the sliders.

Very nice collection. Love the aloes and dyckia's. The petricola confuses me a bit, its supposed to be stemless, looks like a petricola, must be because its potted? Your look very close to full size. Here is mine..

Barb42 and this morning is telling me not to panic... LOL! I should have taken photos when they started to open. I swear, those things were 1/2 a dime in size at the time, so I rushed out to take photos the following morning and thought hmmm, at least they look a little better, maybe 2/3rds the size of my baby band Special Occasion once they start to fully open, but not 1/10 size like they originally were. Here are 2 photos. That bud-flower on the far upper left is actually much larger than what I originally saw, I promise I am not exaggerating. Here is another photo of how every single of those buds originally started out as. You see they all started to open at this tiny miniscule size. My young climber is huge but its beginning flowers so tiny hence the panic. I actually had to highlight the flower because you can barely see it because it's so tiny. Here is what the mature size of Penny Lane is supposed to look like.

Last evening I decided it was time to update to Firefox3, so I went ahead and did that. Then when I came back on to surf, everything was like molasses at Christmas time. I thought I had messed up for sure or else FF3 was the pits! Thank goodness it was GW, not me or FF3. Mmmmmmm,Beignets. We haven't made some in a while. Thanks for the reminder Sheila! This is the recipe we use. 1 package active dry yeast 1 1/2 cups warm water (100-115 degrees) 1/2 cup sugar 1 tsp salt 2 large eggs 1 cup evaporated milk 1 TBSP orange oil 7 cups flour 1/4 cup vegetable shortening oil for deep frying powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, choc. sauce for coating beignets Put warm water into a large bowl, sprinkle in yeast and a couple teaspoons of sugar. Stir a little, let proof for 10 minutes. Add the rest of the sugar, salt, eggs, evap.milk and orange oil. Gradually add 4 cups of the flour. Beat with a wooden spoon til smooth and blended. Beat in shortening then the remaining flour a little at a time. Dough will become very stiff. Work the rest with your hands. Cover the bowl with plastic and refrigerate the dough overnight in a greased bowl. Next morning roll the dough on a floured board to 1/8 inch. Cut into rectangles 2 1/2" X 3 1/2". Heat the oil in a deep fryer to 360 degrees. Fry the dough in hot oil for about 2-3 minutes for each batch. Turning dough so they are golden brown on both sides. Don't overcrowd the fryer. The dough will puff up. Remove the beignets from the fryer and drain. We have bowls of powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar to roll them in, or choc. sauce for dipping. NancyLouise

Hi Rian,
I might have the name wrong. I got it as a baby yrs ago and tried to match it up with pictures. There was no tag. It has never flowered and the leaves are very narrow. It has a rougher texture and the leaves are very dark green. Its been in that pot for a few years which may account for the leggyness. Also the fact that I'm in PA and my growing season is short may have something to do with it. Do you think its stretching?

That Decaryi is just beautiful. Them are the kind of plants I wish I had and love to see from others.

That is the weirdest Sans I ever saw. Looks like they are helping each other out of the pond by the hand. Where do you think they are trying to escape too?lol

Denise, WOWOW how many plants do you have???I love your Dykias, I used to have quite a few only have one now, how do you keep the tips from turning brown and curling up? Also I just love the O. decaryi,I finally found me one this past summer.

My oh my, I love your Hechtia aff. podantha so very much, but your Dyckias are all wonderful and, of course, nothing I've seen in person. Well, I did see a Dyckia at a nursery today, finally...but alas, the same one I have. Shoot!

You had me at the Cashew Family representative there, Denise, and the rest is more gravy on the goose, or something like that. The plants are wonderful to see - the broms, the Aloes, not to speak of the cactuseseseses. And to finish up the treat, the Walking Tall Sans. Nice plants they are.

Thanks guys! I think I better put another pot under that last Sans. or it will keep looking for dirt. I guess I could get a whole train going with that, but I would need help carrying them.

Simply fabulous collection--I have a question about Opercularia decaryi--I was sent some cuttings in September, put them in a warm greenhouse where the leaves turned a deep maroon color. Now, 4 months later, they have rooted but several have lost their leaves while others kept their dark maroon ones. Is this normal for greenhouse grown specimens? Is your mature plant evergreen?

Mine's deciduous - I've giving it just a sip until towards Spring, when I'll hope to see it going into leaf.

Is that praetensis? It sure looks like A. peglerae, but I don't know nothin' anymore. The A. sinkatana brought back memories of harvesting pups from the plant I had in the front yard in San Diego. If you want another prolific pupper that also puts on a flower show, get a A. schelpii (I always want to make a Three Stooges sound after I see / say that Aloe's species name). Anyway, I digress - I've never had that A. verdoorniae - yours is sweet. Seeing your Agave ver...you know, The Shaft Agave (Right on!) makes me want to repot mine and see how big those pups are. There sure are some happy plants there.

You are absolutely right, that aloe is mistagged. I think I lost the tag years ago and went on memory. (so much for my memory) Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I know someone had a perfect A.verblahblah back then. I seem to remember this community splitting so maybe it someone over the fence I'm remembering.

Seedmoney - My Opercularia decaryi is deciduous too. The leaves seem to mimic the changing seasons outside. Sometimes it will keep some leaves in winter if its warm enough in the house. Sounds like your cuttings are doing what fine. What I want to know is how did you get your cuttings to root???
