Yes, those are aerial roots that appear to be growing from a leave that has broken off of the stem with possibly some new growth... not clear from your picture. And, yes it isn't C. 'Hobbit'. It might be helpful to take a good picture of the entire plant for an I.D.

Wow...that's a cool looking Jade, definitely not a hobbit. I love the speckled, almost frosted looking leaves!

Here's the entire plant. You can see a second dried up stem poking up behind the first.

You can somewhat see in this photo that it's still half attached, although it's a little dark.

Should have had something in the photo for scale, I just realized. The whole plant is about as tall as my finger.

Roots like this are more commonly developed in some garden shops and the big box stores by providing marginal improper lighting and close quartered humidity on the sales shelves, even watering could of helped it set root like that depending on the shop.
Miss-labeling it as C. Hobbit is a result of the stores whole sale providers but is some type of Crassula.

This may be a Crassula, but it is not a what is normally classified as a jade, namely C. ovata and C. arborescens.

Yes, it is a Crassula, nice plant. Am guessing something like rupestris or marnieriana, sort of columnar growing Crassulas. Am guessing it'd still want similar mix & light conditions.

Thanks, I'm quite pleased as well :) I actually found two, a second at a different store just labeled "succulent", but this one is even smaller and has lost a number of leaves. Never seen them there before, so the stores must have the same supplier.

Took a look for some info about columnar Crassulas and it looks a lot like crassula perforata. I'm reading that I should wait until spring and their growth period before transplanting them into a gritty, well-draining mix, to make sure the roots heal.
