Well, let's see. I've been growing palms, ferns, cactus and succys since 1974, broms and tillandsias about 1980 or so, (hard to remember, you know how it was). I really enjoy growing Madagascar plants. Shoot, I grow any and everything. Are you close to Glen Helen Park?

I don't live too far from Glen Helen Park. Do either of you know any good sources to find plants from individuals? I have tried the retail businesses and have met some people, but perhaps you know of others. I am part of the Saddleback Bromeliad Society, and have been fortunate enough to meet some great people. Increasing the collection is always fun. I am really into all sorts of bromeliads, but dyckias, hechtias, deuteros, and puyas are really fun to me. Any suggestions?

It used to be easy to find terrestrial broms in SD. Try http://ranchosoledad.net/inventoryDetail.asp?id=134. Be prepared for an eyeful. Take your hiking boots if you go for a visit. They had Puya too.
You will find various hybrid Dyckia at the nurseries along the coast.
Is there still a North County San Diego Brom group?

No more NC brom society :-( hasn't been around for probably 5-6 years.
Soledad has been getting a lot of Vriesea hybrids in that are very high on the cool scale. I think Pam at Birdrock Tropicals still has a bunch of spinys left over from her Carlsbad days.

Hi,
I'm new to bromeliads and am looking for local places to get some. I'm in Vista. Where would a newbie go to look and see what is available? I have a question.. on the Michael's website,(main page) they have a plant on the far right with red flowers and green leaves. Can anyone tell me the name of that plant? It looks my alpinias that crumped when we hit our "cold spell" and I am thinking that this would be a good replacement.

I'm in Dana Point. I've got two grapewood logs covered with various Tillandsia, a big planter with Guzmania, Vriesea and another tank brom plus Crypanthus. And I just bought a Dyckia.

Is anyone planning to attend the La Ballona Valley Bromeliad, Cactus and Succulent Show on May 3 and 4 in Culver City?

hotdiggetydam- I'm sorry I cant tell if it has a yellow center. The picture is in the banner at the top of the website, they have five pictures of plants. It is the red one on the far right. It looks similar to a ginger plant, but I assume it is a type of bromeliad. If I can figure out what it is I would like to buy some.

Gonzer, this is about a 7 year old Sony Cyber-shot 2.1 mega pixels. Feels like it belongs in a museum already! I also have a Cyber-shot 5.1 mega pixels that I use sometimes but the colour of the pictures does not NEARLY match the old one. It seems to lack some red or yellew hues.
