I hope i didnt jump the gun by planting my vines to soon its been so hot this winter and I wanted the vines to climb on my swing sure hope we dont get any cold weather mainly a freeze .Its so pretty outside feels like spring here.

It was very spring-like Saturday and Sunday. So much so that I had a Monarch laying eggs all over my backyard yesterday. Not a milkweed leaf left untouched from what I could tell! Yea! I'm so excited!

If you're growing them on indoors and the humidity is high enough to prevent them from drying out, leave them that length unless they begin to die back from the tops, then cut them shorter as they turn. If you're growing them outdoors and you're getting rains to keep them hydrated or the humidity is high enough to prevent them from drying out, leave them that length. I have to make mine shorter so I can bury more of the canes because I live in a savannah type climate. While we CAN get dews and occasional fogs, it is usually too arid for that much cane without roots to support it to remain alive and full enough of water to work. It rained several inches yesterday and into this morning. Now, it's a very cold, very dry wind. The water standing in the low spots in the street has already dried up. The wet soil in the shade of the house where the sun doesn't hit this time of year would usually remain wet for weeks this time of year. It's already beginning to appear to dry out because the wind is so arid. My climate just doesn't have the humidity or rain to support that much exposed unrooted cutting. If yours does, go for it! If where you're growing them on has enough moisture, go for it! As long as you can keep them alive, using longer cuttings should provide more stored nutrients to support the cuttings until they actually root and begin feeding themselves. If they appear to be shriveling because they're drying out and you can't increase the humidity or keep them sprayed with water a couple of times a day, trim them shorter. Longer cuttings like yours work quite well in mist propagators where the system mists or fogs the cuttings at regular intervals to keep them from drying out. If you need to, you can do the same, or you can cut them shorter so more of the total length is buried in the dirt. Does it make more sense now? Kim

I almost did the same thing. If you planted them 4 to 6 inches deep, they should be all right unless it remains in the 30 degree temp for a few days. Nothing I can think of you doing. I am sure they will be all right. I do have a few in and am more worried about the rain.

I have an update on DF: it appears that he tried to escape the VA home yesterday and threw a wheelchair at someone, missing them of course, but he did injure his own ear somehow. The doctors believe that he has Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, going back to WWII. This does not surprise me, and I know that he suffered from it severely during the early years of his marriage. The bad thing is that he has PTSS, but the good thing is that because of the diagnosis, his care will be paid for by the VA. I definitely believe in veterans getting this kind of benefit, since they sacrifice so much for everyone when they have to go to war. DF does not like to accept help from anyone, which has made his life and his family's life more difficult than it needed to be. Here's a picture of the phalaenopsis that we got at the orchid store. Anyway, I tried to review what you want on your wish lists and am a little confused. Did you want both minis and Russians? I planted passiflora,blackeyed sussie,mexican flames and cypress vine.I also planted my mexican sunflowers they were so pot bound was worried they would die.Its been so pretty here it has to be spring.

Nancy86, great, I also had Monarchs laying eggs Sunday. The milkweed is in pots yet so I brought them in so the ants and lizards wouldn't get them. Unfortunately it looks like our temps are going to be in the low 30's tomorrow night. I have seedlings coming up all over my garden and am concerned that I also jumped the gun.

Do you have any frost clothes you can put over your seedlings? I thought the frost clothes I bought at Lowe's really did the trick this winter. But our low temperatures never lasted very long, like days at a time. It would get to thirty degrees at four in the morning and then be a sunny day. And I have been amazed this winter at finding catepillars in the morning that I missed the night before still living after dropping to twenty-nine degrees. I haven't figured out what temperature kills them. But maybe the frost clothes were the difference. And I was bummed to find out one day when dragging the frost clothes back out, that a chrysalis had been formed on one that I didn't see, so it wasn't hanging.

Yes, I thought of covering the seedlings. Will do my best. It won't stay cold very long so maybe everything will be ok. I have a lot of seeds in trays so I can bring them in. I will be busy today carrying plants inside and covering. We too have been surprised at how many GF cats we continue to find after a night of low temps. In the last 2 days I have released 9 Monarchs and 4 Gulf Fritillaries.
