Don't put marigolds they seem to make them sick. Petunilas work well for me. Vista bubble gum pink likes all the fertizer and water and bloomed from spring until hard freeze. I haven't looked out there in a few days but the darn thing just might still be blooming, lol. It is wayyyy better than any of the other petunia series and it self cleans. I had sweet potatoe vine in one of the large pots and thing tried to take over the world. I think that lime one is kin to kudzu, lol.

I'm sure Lucy will have suggestions here, hers looked great last year. I want to dosome underplanting too so I have something nice to look at when the brugs are out of bloom.

I have arabian jasmine planted under some of mine. It trails out of the larger pots nicely, although I do have to trim it back when it starts getting out of hand. I've been lucky so far, the brugs have had a different blooming cycle than the jasmine, so its almost year-round fragrance.

I just put some Peaches n cream Verbena under some in larger pots. I think that will be very pretty draping over the sides. I may mix some of that Brandy Cherry Rudbekia under Kongs. That wounld be a neat splash of color.

I was told not to plant daturas with brugs. Can it be done? Seems like the perfect combination.

I love that purple and yellow.
I use caladiums, ti plants, yellow shrimp plant, sweet potato vines (they come in black, pink and white variegated, chartruse etc. You can also plant morning glories and moonvines and let them climb up the brugs. For much of the summer when N Nick wasn't blooming there were plenty of moonvine flowes all over that brug blooming so it didn't look so bare lol. Coleus and crotons will also go okay. Some philodendrons can grow underneath or climb them as well.

Love that pic Mary. The ones in front I had in the ground I planted the red cypress vine too close on a metal form and it reached out and grabbed Charles Grimaldi, lol. John kept saying it was strangling him but it held him up in the high winds very well, lol. Moonflower would probaby work great since it doesn't stangle so bad, lol. Gonna try that. Just make sure whatever you plant under them likes as much water and fertilizer as the brugs. The reason they say not to plant datura with them is because they are in the same family and can carry the same virus and diseases I think. I bet clematis would do well on the tall brugs too but it would have to be the type that you prune down each fall after the frost same as the brugs. Some only flower on old growth.

I underplant but also put some vines and tall plants in with the brugs. One of the prettiest combos was a mid size rust colored sunflower that was planted with a CG. I'll see if I can find a pic. I also use passion vines amd morning glories. That Persian Shield looks great with the brug.

Mary and Karyn what a great underplanting! I love that a lot. Read most of the thread messages yesterday. NO time to find a picture of my underplanting.
I used Periwinkle's and it worked great for me. By the end of the season they had covered the whole pot. The seeds that fell inside the pots are even starting to grow now!

Got lots of seeds left so Dorothy if you want any, just fire me a e mail and say what color you prefer?

Oh and Kristy is right about the Marigold and Nicoteria should also not be planted with Brugs. My DH is not allowed to smoke his pipe next to them either. There is a virus that starts when brugs are exposed to nicotine. Sorry no more info cause my brain is on wintersleep roflmao.

But also I learned the hard way before knowing not to put marigolds near brugs. I planted only 2 plants in a pot and the marigold grew so huge that it suffocated (sp) the Brug. Marigold also has a humangous rootsystem and you end up watering THEM instead of your brug. The Periwinkle's are not bad with the roots at all!

That is really pretty too lucy. I like the yellows, white and orange together.
Here is one with a layered sort of look to it. There is a yellow shrimp plant to the left of the pink ti plant but it wasn't blooming in the photo .

Wow I really really like this. At first I was going to go with only periwinkles again. But now after seeing all this great underplanting, I will try those ideas!! Especially the inground brugs I will have this year.

Lynette I like the plants you have with the inground brugs. I use the vines because it gives you a constant source of color and brugs can be pretty boring when they aren't in bloom.

I agree they sure can be boring lol. Some have nice foilage especially the fuzzy ones but too much green aint a good thing :)
I don't thing the mg vines strangle the established brugs too much. You just sort of have to watch them and cut off what you don't want. The baby brugs could easily be strangled by some vines though.
