The first year I used miracle grow potting mix but have used pro mix every year since. I have had better germination and bigger plants with the pro mix.
A friend of mine used walmarts expert blend, I thought that it was a bit hard but she had great results with it.Another friend used farfards and it was good but came up with lots of weeds in her containers.

My local nursery makes their own blend and sells it, maybe you could try a nursery if you can't get to a walmart for the expert blend.

I like pro-mix too. I get it in a big bale and what I don't use up for WS containers I use to make potting mix for my patio pots.

I like Pro-Mix and use that if I can find it. I've also used and liked Fafard and Sunshine Metro Mix.

You might try going to local nurseries and asking what they use for their own seed starting and containers. I've not found one yet that uses MG. I'd use whatever the pros use. Chances are that it will be good stuff.

We've had lots of horror stories about Hyponex. Based on that, I'd stay away from it.

My preferred soiless mix is Pro Mix but I have used just about anything, except Hyponex. Pro Mix is not a MG product.
I've had good results with all of them.

Pro Mix is available in compressed bales and often on sale about this time. Cheaper that way.

I don't amend the mixes as the seedlings don't (ideally) spend much time in the containers so don't need fertilizer etc. If they don't get planted out right away I add fertilizer to the water.

Last winter I used Miracle Grow Potting mix and stirred in some peat moss and it worked great!

I started out with Fafard because it was all I could get last November when I stumbled across the WS forum. When that ran out I bought another oneÂfrozen solid of course. #3 was Pro-mix because by then thatÂs all I could get. It was more expensive but not by much. A few weeks ago I went to a nursery supply & bought 3 bales of Fafard. I had great results with both that & PM so IÂll use it again this time. I did blend in some Maine Potting Soil when I first started WS but by the time March rolled around I was using just the Fafard/PM. For comparison, my neighbor who brought me all the milk jugs decided to WS some seeds in his own compost. His results: zilch, nada, no sprouts at all. This year weÂre trying an experiment: heÂs going to try some of the Fafard and see what happens. I agreed to try his compost for comparison. WeÂre going to sow the same seeds on the same day in the two different mediums and see what happens.

I've had good luck with the store brand potting mix from Ace Hardware.

I have also used Scotts Potting Mix and it was fine although I like Miracle grow the best.
