Do you think that $17 for a Stars and Stripes is too much?

I ordered the miniatures that comes in the packages of three and I just got an e-mail that they also have Stars and Stripes for $17 a piece, but also in a package of 3, so I am at the same point as I was when I posted my original "Who wants to order with me?" post... I will order it if two other people think that it is worth this much money.

I have spent the last few months pouring over every catalog and website that has Hippiastrums at retail or wholesale prices... the lowest price I've found for a bulb is 7 dollars and change, with the highest being around 24 dollars for one bulb, and if I'm not mistaken, some exotic varieties are even pricier!

I don't think 17 dollars is that high, although, it's not that low either... I found a picture of Stars and Stripes at the Park Seed Company website... it's a semi-double South African bulb, orange-red striped with white. It's very pretty! It's 13 and a half inches tall with 7 inch blooms.

Give me a day or two, and I'll let you know if I can take one, that is, if you do decide to add that to the order.

Yes, I found the same Park Seed Company site. If I order a bulb from there, it costs $14.95 + $6.95 shipping, so it comes to: $21.90. So $17 per bulb comes out well, I just don't want three. Jodik, be careful with shopping. :o) I don't want to be responsible for your demise! But you are welcome to think about it and demand your right. Of course.

Like holligator, I think that two "busy" surfaces tend to compete with each other for your attention, and they tend to cancel each other out. I always thought of the backsplash as a "bridge" between the upper cabinets and the counter top and lower cabinets. My backsplash is similar to sue b's. I used a row of 4 x 4 inch field tiles, with three rows of 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch mosaic, then 3 x 6 inch subway tiles the rest of the way. I wanted something different above the range, and that led me to the final design, which incorporates the mosaic tile. I was initially not happy with the grout lines I ended up with, but I think it makes the kitchen look more "old fashioned", which was the look I was going for. While my backsplash seems to work in my kitchen, I don't think it would look good in a more modern kitchen. I really like your granite, and if you want it to be the focal point of your kitchen, a more neutral backsplash will certainly bring it to the forefront. You're certainly not alone in changing your mind about your vision for your kitchen. I can't tell you how many times I changed my mind about nearly every element of my kitchen. Growing up, my family always had both dogs and cats. (And the occassional bird, rodent, what-have-you...) But as an adult, I've only kept cats. I live alone, always lived in apartments, and have a pretty crazy schedule; work a lot of late nights, go away for a couple of days at a time, etc --not a very dog-friendly life, but the cats have always taken it well. Dogs need much more regular schedules, much more interaction, much more work than cats. I see dogs like little kids. The human is always (or should always be!) the boss, and they're always trying to follow you, nudge you. "Take me out, toss my ball, let me sit on you, let me worship you, train me, take me out, watch me defend you......" Like living with an agile two-year old -- exhausting! Cats, on the other hand, are like adults. Mine have always been very affectionate, and run to the door when I come home, but there's no need to lick me all over or jump on me. They like to play, but it doesn't always have to involve me. My Siamese will play "fetch-the-hair-fastener" until my arm falls off, but he also plays happily by himself. Or simply takes a nap. Cats don't seem to need their human to do so much. If you're rude or unpleasant to a cat, they don't fight, they just stalk off. But they don't foget it, the same way a human would. A good lesson to remain courteous! But dogs will forgive anything if you toss them some pepperoni and a peanut butter kong! (I'm not talking about abuse or injury, just being rude or unpleasant to an animal.) Since cats are not the pack creatures dogs are, I feel really honored when they shower me with affection. They don't fear me, they're not trying to up their status, they just felt like patting my face or licking my ear. Again, just my subjective opinion, but dogs always seem like they're 'sucking up'. Unfortunately, I think dogs *are* more valued than cats in this society. People like to be flattered and made to feel important, and dogs are happy to treat us like gods.

Ok, once again, going against the flow, but going with what I think would sell in the place you're selling...paint, definitely. The oak is boring, and staining it another color is just saying it's boring oak. Like it was said, it's just a plain box! Shoppers at your booth are looking for a specific look, so you gotta add the doodads. I liked the oval with the fancy knob and the purply fabric. I don't like the four ovals, tho. I think I'd do them only on top, then fill in the holes at the lower part and not add anything to the bottom "drawer". As for paint, I'd see it painted white then take a dark purply glaze, like the color of the fabric, and do a glaze, wipe off and make it be 'antiqued' with just a hint of the color in the grooves of the applique. I'd still tuft the top...but that's me!

Hi Lass: what I thought for a minute won't work if the table is up with it's extensions and chairs and used a lot..My grandma had a large dining room and one wall had floor to ceiling glass panels with a door as one panel that opened and folded back for a good sized passage when needed..old brass framing and hinges etc on these panels..she also had drapes across them-there must have been some plaster wall at the top.....she would completely open/close drapes depending on activities.... Your passage from front hall could be an interesting place for some doors that open/close in a clever way....then if table would be left with leaves down or a smaller round table were placed, on left side as in "parlor table" effect..., you would clear almost half the room on fireplace side for a real seating venue ,facing fireplace wall ...making a focal point and .....maybe cost saving as the redo of your front windows wouldn't be needed .. But if the table serves as "office"-granted,that need is driving everything. I tend to think a fireplace wall is an incredible spot for focus and you are going to go big and spendy if redoing windows at the front and making another focus wall......seems like a duplication for the room in a way......just be sure....you can do a lot in there already with what you have, no doubt.

For me, too much for a double variety. If it were a new cybister or exotic, I might pay that price.

Park Seed is Wayside's sister company. They charge shipping like crazy!

It's too late, soultan... I'm hooked... I'm a full-blown addict now!

I'm actually doing a lot more window shopping than purchasing. I do plan to order more from John Scheepers, though... I was pleasantly surprised by the size and health of Amalfi, and the prices are really reasonable!

If I find I can't afford the Stars and Stripes, I will pass... but we've actually been making a bit of money with our dog food sales, so I'm not as broke as I used to be. LOL! I will think about it, and let you know for sure in a day or two. I don't want you to miss the opportunity to get that bulb if you really want it.

I have been looking around at the different bulb companies, and I notice that some are putting up new varieties that they didn't have a month ago. Is this a normal thing this time of year?

Royal Colors just put up Carmen Jumbo recently... Now I really want to order. I don't have Carmen yet, and having it Jumbo sized makes it really desirable...
I like all varieties, so it does not really matter if I don't order this now. It might come around some other times. As I said already (I think I did), I will not stress over this. I have a larger collection of varieties already than any commercial grower. :o)
John Scheepers is good in shipping charges. It does not matter how many bulbs you buy, the shipping is a percentage of the purchase price, so the value really does not matter.
Wayside and Park Seed does it differently, and this excercise makes their bulbs undersirable. I'd only want Stars and Stripes from them, but shipping makes it too expensive already. I will see if I can find it locally. Hopefully, I will, then I will not have to worry about shipping, ordering... And then I might be able to get a bulb for you too cheaper and include in your future package... It can sit in the fridge for the time being. We'll talk about it.

Since my collection is so small, I'm still trying to figure out which bulbs I want to order next, and where I should order from.

Has anyone ordered from Willow Creek Gardens' online catalog? They have a great selection, and the prices are not too bad. They have a bulb called Madrid that is just beautiful! I would love to get that one, plus they have other ones I'd like to have, such as Pink Floyd and Ruby Meyer. Good company or bad company??

FYI, Amaryllis Bulb Company just posted some new varieties on their website, they came from a grower in Brazil: Madrid, Bingo and Red Knight. I ordered them plus Estella (a dwarf, sort of reminds me of Pink Floyd) United Nations and White Peacock. They haven't gotten their Dutch bulbs yet, so shipping will be delayed on the dutch ones. They also have Gilmar this year.

I haven't had any problems with Amaryllis Bulb Company. At least I haven't gotten a mislabelled bulb from them yet.

Excellent... What we need is a list of companies that are reliable and trustworthy, not mention reasonable on shipping, so newcomers to Hippis, like myself, can add to their collections with confidence. Anyone interested in naming the top 5 companies that fit the above description? That would be a much appreciated list for newbies like me! :-)

Now I will have to order from Willow Creek Gardens. This forum is really corrupting.
Royal Dutch, Madrid, Santa Fe... 3 so far. Maybe I order from them to bring up my 7 bulb order to the 10 monthly maximum. :o)

Oops... Amaryllis Bulb Company has increased its offerings, so they have 11 new varieties for me... Uh. I might end up ordering Again. It is a good company, and they try to quickly fix any problems that might come up. I have gotten several mislabeled bulbs from them, but got replacement bulbs immediately, as soon as I sent the pictures to her.
I would definitely order from them. I will check out what I can get locally, then probably order from this company first above all Internet companies (Since I have already exhausted John Scheepers' catalogue).

I plan on ordering from John Scheepers first, then perhaps from one more source that has what JS doesn't carry... At this point in my collecting, every catalog has things I don't!

So far, I'm looking at: John Scheepers, Royal Colors, EastToGrowBulbs.com, Willow Creek Gardens, and Amaryllis Bulb Company.

I know there are lots more, but those seem to have the nicest choices.

So I just learned that John Scheepers might not be selling Papillio Improved when they sell you a Papillio Improved bulb. I don't know how to make sure they know that they are selling mislabeled Papillio bulbs... Most of the time they don't know anything about these flowers. They just go by the description, and Papillio itself fits the description pretty well, so they can argue that they sell the right kind, not knowing the truth.

Where did you learn this?

I have Papillio from Brent and Becky. I have Papillio from John Scheepers. They appeared to be slightly different, but I haven't seen enough blooms to determine that for sure. They are still relatively new to me...

In another thread here, right at the top of the list. Just scan them through. Hans told us that Papillio Improved is Jungle Star renamed. I have a picture of Jungle Star from Royal Colors' web site a few years ago and indeed, it does not look like a Papillio at all, even though it has the characteristics. My only problem with John Scheepers is that they have a picture of "Improved" on their site and my Papillio (Improved) looks like it, but so does my Papillio, so what to do? Should I start educating them that they are selling commong Papillio? The two bulbs came up with one scape each, two flowers on each, same height, same seed pods, same leaves, same characteristics. So that is my problem now. I think I have two Papillios and no Improved.

Within a variety, there will be certain minute differences, unless you're talking about clones... just as there are slight differences in German Shepherds, for example... they are all one breed, German Shepherds, but because of how genetics work, slight deviations will occur, and there will be differences in fur color, height, etc... perhaps this is why a Papillio that one person has might look slightly different than someone else's.

That is not to say that John Scheepers has the correct labels on their stock, or that your Papillios are, indeed, Improved, Soultan... I don't really know the differences between the two, having never really taken a good look at the Improved variety vs. regular Papillio... is it the look of the plant that is "improved", or is it just the performance?

Isn't there a thread here somewhere picturing Maria's Papillios, one picture after the other?? Perhaps a look at those would help answer some questions...

That clarifies a lot.

Hans-Werner is talking about a version of Papillio sold in the US by Smith and Hawkins, and I purchased those last year. He explained to me that this is indeed 'Jungle Star'! They are quite nice, but not nearly as nice as either of the other versions presented as Papillio.

Here is a picture of 'Jungle Star' sold to me as Papillo...

I believe this is what Hans-Werner is talking about.
Perhaps, he can add to this discussion!

Boy, those blooms-don't get me wrong, all blooms are beautiful-but these seem wimpy compared to papilio. I really cannot comment because I have just a young bulb and have never met a Papilio bloom in person.

But, they are still nice. Just not the REAL Papilio, improved or not! No butterfly wings...

Certainly, you can comment! These are more cybister looking and not the broad upper petals of a butterfly!

I am thrilled to have them, though...

Oh... and I completely had a blonde moment, Soultan... I'm so sorry I didn't let you know sooner... I must pass on the Stars & Stripes offer... the 6 I'm already getting will be enough. But I do thank you for including me in your offer!

I'm so looking forward to the 6 already ordered! I keep looking at the pictures and thinking how nice it will be to see those blooms firsthand!

That is indeed Jungle Star. That is what Hans says is the Papillio Improved. And if it is Improved then I have two Papillios and no Improved. Actually, I like it better than Papillio. It has more character.

I am not sure that this is what Hans-Werner is saying. Only he can clarify that...

The point I was trying to make is that these were sold as Papillo and NOT Jungle Star. I was not disappointed at all. The picture in the online catalog was obviously not Papillio or Papillio Improved, so I expected what I received, and they were spectacular!

I am too new to Papillio and Papillio Improved to determine the difference in the two. They are both abolutely AWESOME!

If I remember corectly, isn't the difference between Papillio and Papillio Improved the petal shape and placement? Improved could also refer to its performance...

What I have understood from Hans' posts that Papillio Improved is the same as Jungle Star. So if my Papillio Improved looks exactly like a Papillio, then it must not be Improved. :o) I have to get a Jungle Star.

Here is what Sir Hans said in the other post...

"The name 'papilio improved' used to stand, EXCLUSIVELY, for a cybister-papilio hybrid with the correct name 'Jungle Star'.
This hybrid is indeed capable of producing 3 scapes with 6 flowers each - out of a very good bulb. BUT the flowers are more kind of cybister flowers than papilio at all...

Soultan...I want one too. Inform me if you find a source. So is Elizabeth's pic a Jungle Star? It's the first time I see a pic of it. Veronica Read says that it has very similar color and markings to Lima.

That is my best guess. The picture that I saved from Royal Colors' site a few years ago when it was sold out already is similar to it, so I assume it is Jungle Star Papillio Improved. I will let you know if I find it anywhere.
