Some additional pics & info of the Santa Barbara site

16 years ago

For those of you who are interested in the Santa Barbara site that I visited this past weekend, here are a few more pictures showing the area.

Basically, if you want a map you can googlemap or mapquest 7686 Hollister Avenue, Goleta, CA 93117 (this is the address for Ellwood Elementary School). The no-fee parking lot is DIRECTLY across from the school on Hollister, off the 101 freeway. Those of you whose significant others golf can let them know that the site is right next to the famed Sandpiper Golf Course. There is a way to drive and park closer to the spot but the walk is very nice and this way you aren't disturbing the residences...

Park in the lot *dogs are welcome, just remember to bring a bag to pick up after them* and begin your walk in the wooded area to the left. Don't worry; there is only ONE wooded area there as the area to the right is in development (housing!). You may want to bring a bottle of water to drink as it is a 20-minute walk TO the area and 20-minute walk BACK to the car!

Although there are no markers, per se, the path is worn so it isn't difficult. It is also an easy walk (my friend's elderly dad was with us and Chelsea walked the entire way). There are a variety of Eucalyptus and Pine trees and some vegetation. Stay on the path, heading towards the beach. Eventually you will come to a fork in the road; take the LEFT. This will eventually lead you fairly close to some houses on the left with the woods on the right (lots and lots of Eucalyptus trees). NOTE: If you take the right fork, you will go to the beach, which isn't too bad either. DH realized later that this was an area he'd surfed back in the 60s when he went to college at UCSB)

Anyway, you are almost there! {{gwi:449661}}Soon, you will come to this little wooden 'bridge' that heads to the right. (In this picture, Chelsea is actually heading back to the car.) You don't actually have to walk on this little beam of a bridge as there is a dirt path to the left of it but it had rained the night before and it was muddy so...

You are now at the entrance to the hidden grove!{{gwi:449663}} Other little signs are posted all around the actual area where the Monarchs roost.{{gwi:449665}}

The paths in the actual grove are spectacular, as seen in this one picture.{{gwi:449667}}All you have to do is look UP!{{gwi:449669}}
