Gaillardia transplant question

I transplanted about a dozen winter sown gaillardia last week from their holding spot to next years permanent location. They were all about 8 - 12 inches tall healthy and bushy. As of today a number of the leaves have yellowed so I'm a bit concerned. They have been watered well so I'm hoping this is just a minor case of transplant shock. Is this normal and should I do anything else a this point.

Is it powdery mildew? Gaillardias love full sun and well drained soil.

Thanks BM, they are in full sun although much less this time of year than mid summer. We have had alot of rain since the transplant so should I back off on the water for now and maybe get some fungicide or something.

I don't like peat pots either but you already bought them. Because you don't want many plants and are using the peat pots I would do 3 seeds per pot because you have more seeds than you will use anyway and with your scissers cut off the extra plants. I too would plant up to 4 inch size before planting in the garden. My method uses four inch pots for seeding 9 seeds per pot evenly spaced. I water by standing the pot in 2 inches of water until the water wicks to the surface of the soil. Next I let pot drain and cover with clear plastic wrap and a rubber band to keep plastic tight. As soon as germination is apparent the plastic is removed and the light and air circulation is increased. When the second set of leaves appears I transplant most seedlings, one to a four inch pot. My fanfare is now on it's third year, looks just as nice, if not nicer, than when I bought it. Compact, not floppy and full of buds. It's even did some reseeding, little babies popping up around the original plant. Goblin is planted directly behind it, new last year from Bluestone. I thought I would have killed it when in April I accidentally pulled it out of the ground while doing some clean-up in the bed, but it survived and is a lot bigger than last year. Summer Sowing Gaillardia

I summer sowed some yellow gaillardia a few days ago and they're sprouting! I have a dirty little secret with those seeds. ;) Also, I noticed some more of my other seeds I winter sowed that didn't sprout in the spring are beginning to sprout now, or at least I think they are and aren't weeds! LOL! Three out of four Paw Paw seeds sprouted. Hopefully number four will, and I'll have 100% germination on those, if not, 75% isn't bad. Karen

Don't know the answer to that one. If you are getting plenty of rain, I wouldn't bother watering.

rich - did the same thing, mine turned a bit yellow and one thing I remembered about gaillardia is that not to overwater - They eventually turned green again and are blooming great. I also transplanted them in very hot weather - about a month ago - because they were in a spot that was in the way of a path (had no choice) and was surprised they took to their new spot.

The yellowing leaves sounds like too much water. Gaillardia don't like wet feet...

I have had mixed results transplanting gallardia. Treated the same, some make it and some don't.
