I went today, picked up Lily of the Valley (10 ct.), Astilbe (5 ct.), Daylily (5 ct. crimson, gold, peach mix) and Lily (10 ct. mixed pink, peach, white mix)...all bags feel nice and heavy, and I've had good luck with HD bulbs/roots/tubers in the past. I used one coupon, and my daughter used one as well...the cashier had to call an assistant manager to enter the coupon, since it wouldn't scan. When it was my daughter's turn, the AM said, "You can't use two." I told her it was a separate sale, and if they wouldn't honor it, I wanted the store manager's and the district manager's phone numbers. Amazing--they didn't say another word. I wasn't rude at all, but I am sick and tired of stores telling me a coupon is void/not valid/unacceptable when it is perfectly legitimate. In fact, we're going back tomorrow to get another 4 bags of plants; there is nothing on the coupons which states we can't. The selection at this early point in the season is fabulous! I am still pretty much 100% certain those are the flower buds and not leaves. They almost always appear before the leaves on these prepared Amaryllis. I don't see anything wrong with that plant at all. The ready potted Amaryllis sold in shops for Christmas are intended to be put straight into a warm light room. I grow them every year and have never had one 'go into shock'. In fact I have one in front of me right now. Just keep it sufficiently watered and wait. They are the easiest things in the world to grow.

The 'Garden' varieties sold here in the spring are strictly by color and most will not bloom the first year. They are indeed relatively inexpensive and smaller. The red ones that I have had to bloom are not Red Lion. I am not sure what they are, so I just call them Garden Red, and they are very pretty, but have smaller blooms. This year, they did not have orange, but they did have pink (picture shows a white center), red, red and white (looks like Minerva) and white for $3.34. Around the first week of March, they will have potted varieties, but those have to be rescued really quickly because they are typically overwatered.

Check out the FAQ - do not reply to the FAQ - for many answers to questions when getting started. Each of us has slightly different practices...some just tidy up the bulb, others strip it down to the first clean layer, while others do nothing!! Some soak the roots, others don't.
