Pot 'em up!

I got a message today from the Netherland Bulb Company that my Double Queen, Rilona, and Exotica replacements were shipped today via UPS. Whooo hooo....gotta get those pots ready!

Also, I had bought some bulbs a couple of weeks ago (ok... maybe last weekend??) and had planned to pot a couple up every other week to stagger blooms, but they are all "bolting" and scapes are starting to peek out the neck, so I just potted Melusine, Amputo, Misty, Red Nymph, and Red Pearl. I potted the Night Star bulb when I brought the bulbs home (after soaking the roots) as the tip of it's scape was already visible.

So much for being able to wait!! Maybe my NBC bulbs will be able to wait a couple of weeks!!

Anticipation, Lizalily, anticipation! And a lot better than waiting for ketchup to pour! LOL!

I have all of those varieties, Kristi, except Melusine... you'll really love Red Pearl, and Red Nymph is very lovely, as well... Misty and Amputo did not bloom for me last year when I got them, but I should get nice blooms the next flowering season.

I think Red Pearl impressed me the most.

Just because there is an optimal time doesn't mean the other times are bad necessarily for pot-ups. Conventional wisdom says there's never a bad time really to get rootbound/suffering plants out of the Peat Pudding and into better substrate as soon as possible. A lot of times I think WE derive more stress out of when to pot-up/repot than the plant does. If it's an OCD/peace of mind thing, then just do it. The plant will likely survive, probably thrive and still love you the same. :) I think a pot-up or repot out of 2-yr old 5-1-1 is bordering on urgent. i also think doing all your 5-1-1 pot-ups/repots at the same time each yr (say in the month of March or whatever) will help you buy in bulk/cheap and keep you on a schedule, i.e., you will know every year/other year you have to stock up on materials and perform the transplants on all your babies. You can get in a groove that way.

I would like to keep 2 or 3 of them to grow out fully. But what would I do with 16 of them? They are too small to put in the ground and too small to sell. If I could leave them in that pot for another 6 months they might be big enough to plant, trade or sell but I think they would be a bit crowded and not look so good.

Costco's bulbs are a great buy and so are their J&P roses! You will enjoy your oriental lillies for years to come, and they will have little babies! I originally bought my Casablanca oriental lillies at Costco back in 2001, and every year since I have been enjoying them and they have multiplied. The clematis are also a great buy! From my experience, the first year I bought mine, (forgot the variety, I've got to check records) but the plants stayed very small, no blooms...but oh boy....the following years 1 and 2, they really took off and I am enjoying them up against my backyard fence.

Melusine seems to be a mystery bulb. For some reason, they always ship what turns out to be Vivaldi. Personally, I am anxious to get Melusine, and YEP! I'm trying again this year. We will see..

Today, one of my shipments from Scheeper's arrived. I showed the huge Red Pearl bulb to my students and suddenly, they all want to buy a bulb for a Christmas gift.

I think this is a good fundraising idea, and I may actually consider it next year.

In the meantime, I am extremely pleased with the sizes of the bulbs that I have ordered. Do you think they ship the largest ones to the first to order?

Maybe that is what I have done wrong in the past...

Places like Colorblends, among others, have special pricing for fundraising... you could make some decent money for a field trip or something! That might be a fun project for your students!

I'm not sure, but I would think size of bulb has to do with growing conditions... of course, some will be jumbo sized due to age of the bulb... but if most are larger, it might be due to better weather and growing conditions for a particular year.

The Lemon Star I bought is huge, and all the bulbs I looked at seem larger this season.

I just potted three more of my bulbs...they refused to stay asleep and are pushing scapes, fast. So I relented...and put them back in their pots.

I'm still not sure how things will work out with my plants in my new place. I've mentioned it before but I have only Northern exposure and though here in Colorado we get loads of intense sun all year round, the plants will have difficultly during the darker months of winter. I have plans on adding lamps to my grow-room (spare bedroom). I have one now and the olive tree seems to like it so hopefully the broad leaves of my amaryllis will like it too. I have plans for two more lamps.

I like our view of the mountains but my radiometer isn't spinning all that fast these days :o( I need light!

BTW-- Kristi, I'm still upset with you...making me buy a Zombie bulb was really cut-throat. ;o)

Now I have to go buy ANOTHER clay pot. It never ends with this stuff.

I make it a habit to pick up a few clay pots every time I go shopping... that way, I have them on hand. They're inexpensive, and all plants seem to like them. I keep a stack of 6", 8", 10", 12", and several of the smaller ones for seedlings and tiny bulbs.

Ryan, you might want to invest in a timer for your lights... they're pretty cheap, and you can pick one up at Home Depot or any one of those stores. I've got all my lights on timers, so that all my plants get between 16-18 hours of light per day. I think I paid $8 each for the timers... a good investment.

Once your Zombie blooms, Ryan, you'll wonder why you waited so long to get one! They're positively gorgeous!
