My first guess would be Vr. 'Rosa Morena', but there may be others that look similar. It's definitely a hybrid with Vr. erythrodactylon in the mix, and although 'Purple Cockatoo' is an erythrodactylon hybrid and has a similar form, it's dark purple, as you might expect. Never heard of one just called 'Cockatoo' (although that doesn't necessarily mean there isn't one).

Hello Jack, Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. It sounds like you confirm that it is a Vr. fenestralis "form" - I was not sure. Thank you also for your advice on leaving the very imature pups on when I split the plant, I will do that. You mention that you cannot grow this plant very big as you no longer have a heated greenhouse. What minimum temperature should I keep this plant above to ensure it remains "comfortable"? I have plenty of competition in the greenhouse during the winter from other plants but I would not like to lose this attractive one. Temperatures at night have already been just above zero C so I have put the plant in the greenhouse (along with many other sensitive ones I grow) and sadly in order to squeeze it in I cut off the flower spikes. Having read your comment that "when selfed they do not all come 100% true to form" made me realise that if I had left the flower spikes on I may have been able to collect seed from it. For future years would I have to fertilise with a small brush, leave it to insects or are these plants self-fertile? Thank you again for your advice. Norm (Jadgee - what my granddaughter calls me!)

Hi Phee, Your vriesea looks exactly like mine which I also bought labeled Vr. Corralina. I too went through the same process of checking on the fcbs photo index a couple of years ago, and read the same thing about it probably being Vr. Yellow Tail. It convinced me, and I changed my label accordingly (but with first name of Corralina also included on tag). The leaves are more colourful if grown in brighter light than the one on fcbs site called Corralina, but the flower spike is the same under both names. Mine clumps like yours too - see pics of my Vr. Yellow Tail (a.k.a. Corralina). And both of us being Aussies makes sense that the wrong name has been perpetuated around the traps. So my vote for your vriesea is Vr. 'Yellow Tail'. Cheers, Kerry

Hi everyone. Junglemel - First of all I'd like to clarify what I said in my initial comment which was, " Your plant looks like Vriesea var. ospinae gruberi". I need to emphasise the "looks like" as there are also many hybrids that have been bred using Vr. ospinae gruberi as a parent, with twelve of them registered on the BCR and probably many more crosses that haven't been registered. (See: http://registry.bsi.org/index.php?fields=Parents&id=9212&search=ospinae) If you consider there can be hundreds or more from each of these crosses, that makes a very wide distribution of similar looking plants, one of which could even be your plant. As I said previously, by Googling "ospinae gruberii images" you will see many "look alikes". Just to take this discussion a little further, I'd like to add a few pictures from a friend's collection to show just how variable the colour of this plant can be.
