temp is good ...might want to add more lighing...depends on how many and what kind of plants you have

P. I'm living in a colder State,in Western N.Y. ,and have done what you are doing for a number of years.My plant room was in the finished basement,and I used 40watt flourescent plant bulbs,enough fixtures for a total of 200 watts.I kept them about 10" above the plants,a mix of about 8 genera.The temp was kept around 62 degrees.I kept root watering to a bare minimum,no fertilizer,and had a small fan going on 'low' when the lights were on.I kept trays of water in a few places among the plants for humidity.The lights and fan were 'on' from 8am to 10pm by use of a timer. This system worked well for me until it was time for them to go outdoors. Mostly,the plants stayed about the same,not much growth,but not deteriorating either.Some even bloomed,but that was rare. I don't use this system anymore,as I've cut back on my collection,and now have all plants inside in a heated Sunroom,with good window lighting.Still use the flourescent lights/fan there too,and can mist them every few days.Some pics of the sunroom.Note the trays under the cryptanthus,for easy bottom watereing.

i have 3 fluorescent light fixtures hanging about 2-3 ft above all the plants. i put them on timers. i have them on for 11 hrs.

what other lights should i add?

i have alotta aechmeas, several billbergias, neos, quesnelia testudo, quite a few guzmania, and other species.....quite a good mix.

P...sounds pretty good,assuming you are using three 4 ft.fixtures w/2-40watt lamps (=240watts total).That should be enough light,none others needed. But you should get the lighting closer to the lights I think.Prop up the small plants on pots so all plants are about the same hight,and you would do better to have them about 1 foot away from the light source.Flourescent lighting lumens (light) drops off fast as you move away from the fixture.If you have one or access to one,a light meter would be a good thing to use to see how much foot candles of light your plants are getting. If they receive 5000to6000 fc average,they would be in a nice medium range for most bromeliads.I got my meter on the internet for a fairly low cost,and its worth having. But it sounds like you have a good set-up to get you thru the colder months.It worked for me,so it should for you too. TIP-- I found that if I fertilized,the plants grew strappy,lacking the light they needed for normal growth that they'd get in sunlight. Also,if you can't move the lighting closer to the plants,I'd suggest you leave the lights on for 18 hours.

consider that done. i bought extra chain and im going to lower the lights. i rarely fert any of my tropicals in the house in the winter...i find that weak growth will result too.
